  5. This is the current version of the DOS Compatibility
  6. Software for 630, 640 and 6100 DOS Compatible systems. The
  7. PC Compatibility Cards (PCI-based) include this version of
  8. the software. This software replaces PC Setup 1.0.7. Please
  9. refer to the Read Me document and manual included with this
  10. software for complete information.

  12. This software consists of a self-extracting archive of a
  13. Disk Copy 1440K Macintosh disk image, a Disk Copy 1440K DOS
  14. disk image, and the DOS Compatibility Software Update manual
  15. in Adobe Acrobat format.  To use, download, double-click the
  16. downloaded file (this decompresses it), and use Disk Copy to
  17. create the disks.

  36. The DOS Compatibility Software Update is a set of software
  37. enhancements that improves the reliability and performance
  38. of the following:
  39.  
  40. * Power Macintosh 6100 DOS Compatible computer
  41. * Macintosh Performa 6100 DOS Compatible computer
  42. * Macintosh Performa 630 and 640CD DOS Compatible computers
  43. * Macintosh LC 630 DOS Compatible computer
  44.  
  45. This update also works with any Power Macintosh 6100 or
  46. Macintosh Performa 6100 series computer that has a DOS
  47. Compatibility Card installed.
  48.  
  49. IMPORTANT  If you are using a PC Compatibility Card with any
  50. Macintosh that has a PCI expansion slot, you do not need to
  51. install this update.

  53. What's included with the DOS Compatibility Software Update
  54.  
  55. * The "Disk Images" folder contains disk images that you can
  56. use to update your DOS Compatibility Software. The
  57. instructions for working with these disk images are in the
  58. online DOS Compatibility Card Software Update User's Manual.

  60. * The "User's Manual" folder contains the DOS Compatibility
  61. Card Software Update User's Manual in Adobe Acrobat (PDF)
  62. format. To open this manual, you need Acrobat Reader, which
  63. is available for free on most online services and at the
  64. Adobe Systems World Wide Web site (http://www.adobe.com). If
  65. you ordered the DOS╩Compatibility Software Update on floppy
  66. disks, Acrobat Reader is already included. You can install
  67. it by double-clicking the ACROREAD.MAC icon in the Acrobat
  68. Reader folder.

  70. System Software Compatibility
  71.  
  72. If you are using a Power Macintosh or Performa 6100 series
  73. DOS Compatible computer, you can use Operating System 7.1.2
  74. or 7.5.3 with the DOS Compatibility Software Update.

  76. If you are using a Macintosh Performa 630, Quadra 630, or
  77. Performa 640CD DOS Compatible, you should use System 7.5.3
  78. with the DOS Compatibility Software Update.

  80. If you are currently using System 7.5, 7.5.1, or 7.5.2, you
  81. can install the System 7.5 Update 2.0 to update to System
  82. 7.5.3. You can order System 7.5 Update 2.0 on a CD or a
  83. high-density floppy disk set from the Apple Order Center by
  84. calling 1-800-293-6617. You can also download System 7.5
  85. Update 2.0 from many online services or the Apple Support
  86. and Information World Wide Web site
  87. (http://www.info.apple.com).

  89. LaserWriter Software Compatibility
  90.  
  91. If you are using System 7.1.2 with a Power Macintosh or
  92. Performa 6100 series DOS Compatible computer that is
  93. connected to a PostScript printer, you need to install the
  94. LaserWriter 8.3.3 software. You can download this software
  95. from an online service or the Apple Support and Information
  96. World Wide Web site (http://www.info.apple.com). If you
  97. ordered the DOS╩Compatibility Software Update on floppy
  98. disks, you already have this software in the "LaserWriter
  99. 8.3.3" folder.

  101. If you are using System 7.5.3, you do not have to install
  102. LaserWriter 8.3.3 because System 7.5.3 already includes it.

  107. could not be included in the online DOS Compatibility Card
  108. Software Update User's Manual.

  110. Configuring Sound Blaster Properly
  111.  
  112. To configure Sound Blaster properly for Windows 95, refer to
  113. "Sound Problems" in the troubleshooting chapter of the DOS
  114. Compatibility Card Software Update User's Manual. Otherwise,
  115. your system may crash when attempting to play 16-bit sounds.
  116.  
  117. Berkeley Systems After Dark for DOS
  118.  
  119. Do not use the After Dark screen saver for DOS in the PC
  120. environment. Once the screen saver activates, it is not
  121. possible to return to the PC environment.
  122.  
  123. Networking 
  124.  
  125. If you are using System 7.5.3 with any of the Macintosh
  126. computer models listed at the beginning of this Read Me
  127. file, use the Network Software Selector to select the "Use
  128. classic networking" option, which is the default setting. Do
  129. not use Open Transport.
  130.  
  131. Shared Memory
  132.  
  133. Windows 95 performance will be much better on a 6100 series
  134. Macintosh computer if there is 8MB or more memory installed
  135. on the DOS Compatibility Card itself. Though the 6100 series
  136. Macintosh supports shared memory between the Macintosh and
  137. the DOS Compatibility Card, system performance will be
  138. better if you install memory directly on the DOS card
  139. instead of using the shared memory feature.

  141. The updated DOS Compatibility software no longer supports
  142. shared memory with the Macintosh Performa 630 and 640CD DOS
  143. Compatible computers. If you removed the memory that was
  144. initially installed on the DOS Compatibility Card in one of
  145. these computer models, you must re-install the memory in
  146. order to use the new software.

  148. Serial Port
  149.  
  150. The DOS Compatibility Card does not support Carrier Detect
  151. (CD). You must configure your communications applications so
  152. they do not use CD. Most communications applications can be
  153. set to respond to the CARRIER string sent back by most
  154. modems.
  155.  
  156. DOS Clipboard not Supported
  157.  
  158. The original DOS Compatibility Card software included a DOS
  159. Clipboard feature. This feature is no longer supported in
  160. the current software.
  161.  
  162. Power Macintosh or Performa 6100 Series DOS Compatible
  163.  
  164. Shut down a 6100 series DOS Compatible Macintosh before
  165. connecting a new monitor. (If you connect a monitor while
  166. this computer is running, you may not be able to configure
  167. the monitor properly in the PC Setup control panel. To
  168. correct the problem, shut down your computer and then
  169. restart.)
