Houston pitcher Mike Scott overwhelmed the Mets in Games One and Four,
and would have faced them a third time in Game Seven if the Astros had won
Game Six. They tried, scoring three runs in the first as Bob Knepper shut out
the Mets on two hits through eight innings. But in the top of the ninth New
York tied the game and held on into extra innings. No one scored again until
the Mets put a run across in the fourteenth. Astro Billy Hatcher tied it up
again later in the fourteenth with a home run just inside the left field foul
pole. Two innings later the Mets (aided by a pair of wild pitches) scored
three runs. Again the Astros came back, scoring twice, but fell just short as
Jesse Orosco struck out Kevin Bass with two men on base to win his third game
of the series and give New York the pennant.
In the series opener Houston scored just one run off Dwight Gooden, but
it was enough, as Mike Scott, fanning fourteen, shut out the Mets on five
hits. New York came back with five runs in Game Two to win behind Bob Ojeda,
who gave up ten hits but only one run. In Game Three the Astros held the lead
into the last of the sixth, when New York tied the score with four runs.
Houston retook the lead in the seventh with a run, but Met Len Dykstra won it
for New York with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
The Astros' win in Game Four evened the series. Houston had scored three
runs by the time Scott (on his way to a three-hitter) gave the Mets their
only run in the eighth. Houston's Nolan Ryan gave up only two hits in the
first nine innings of Game Five (one of them Darryl Strawberry's game-tying
solo homer in the fifth), striking out twelve. But New York's Gooden also
yielded only one run in ten innings of work. Astro Charlie Kerfeld shut out
the Mets in the tenth and eleventh, and the Mets' Orosco stopped Houston in
the eleventh and twelfth. But in the last of the twelfth, Met catcher Gary
Carter singled home a run off Kerfeld to end the game (and his series-long
batting slump)--setting the stage for the sixteen-inning marathon the next
day.

For the second time in the two years of the expanded LCS, a club that
would have been eliminated in a five-game series came back to take the pennant
in seven games. The first two games were one-sided. California scored five
early runs off Roger Clemens and breezed to an easy 8-1 win in the opener.
Boston retaliated in Game Two with nine runs, breaking the game open with six
unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Game Three was close until the Angels homered twice for three runs with
two out in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. In Game Four, the Angels were
handed a tie in the last of the ninth when Boston reliever Calvin Schiraldi
hit a batter with the bases loaded and won in the eleventh on Bobby Grich's
RBI single.
The Red Sox, down three games to one, were on the brink of elimination in
Game Five, with two out in the ninth, when Dave Henderson, after fouling off
one third-strike pitch, hit the next for a two-run homer that gave Boston a
one-run lead. The Angels tied the game in the last of the ninth, but
Henderson's sacrifice fly in the eleventh put the Sox ahead for good.
Boston needed two more wins and got them with surprising ease, 10-4 and
8-1, as Oil Can Boyd and Clemens redeemed their earlier losses.

In their three most recent Series appearances--1946, 1967, and 1975--the
Red Sox had battled to a seventh game, only to lose. This time they came
within one strike of winning the crown in the sixth game--but wound up losing
again in Game Seven.
Boston surprised the favored Mets by taking the first two games in New
York. Bruce Hurst (with relief from Calvin Schiraldi in the ninth) pitched a
four-hitter. New York's Ron Darling hurled just as well but lost when a
seventh-inning walk, a wild pitch, and an error by second baseman Tim Teufel
moved Jim Rice around the bases with the game's only run. Game Two, close for
three innings, turned into a 9-3 Boston blowout as the Sox racked four of the
five Met pitchers for eighteen hits, including home runs by Dave Henderson and
Dwight Evans.
When the Series moved to Boston, though, the Mets revived to rap Sox
starter Oil Can Boyd and two relievers for thirteen hits and seven runs
(starting with Len Dykstra's leadoff home run in the first inning) as former
Sox pitcher Bob Ojeda subdued his old teammates, giving up just one run on
five hits in his seven innings of work. The next day Ron Darling redeemed his
first-game loss with seven shutout innings as his teammates built him a 6-0
lead (five of the runs scoring on homers by Dykstra and a pair by Gary
Carter). The game ended at 6-2, with the Series even at two wins apiece.
Boston recovered in its final home appearance, taking a 4-0 lead and
holding it until Teufel spoiled Bruce Hurst's try for a second shutout by
homering in the eighth inning. Hurst yielded a second run with two out in the
ninth, but struck out Len Dykstra on three pitches to seal his second win.
The ninth inning of Game Six ended with the score tied 3-3. Boston's
Dave Henderson led off the tenth with a home run and two more Sox hits made
the score 5-3. Boston reliever Calvin Schiraldi retired the first two Mets in
the last of the tenth on long flies, but then three Mets singled, driving in
one run and driving out Schiraldi. Bob Stanley, his replacement, had two
strikes on Mookie Wilson when a wild pitch let in the tying run, and then
Wilson's grounder went through first baseman Bill Buckner's legs as the
winning Met bounded across the plate.
The Red Sox nearly recovered in Game Seven. Second-inning home runs by
Dwight Evans and Rich Gedman, a walk, sacrifice, and single gave Boston a 3-0
lead which they held into the sixth inning. But then starter Bruce Hurst lost
his touch: four hits and a walk later the score was tied. A succession of
five Sox relievers tried to hold the line, but the Mets scored five runs to
Boston's two in the final innings for an 8-5 triumph.
