  9. to turn the engine. 
  10. It is in fact a
  11. large electric
  12. motor.  It engages
  13. the crankshaft of
  14. the engine, and
  15. turns it.  At the
  16. same time the
  17. battery supplies
  18. electric power to
  19. the distributor,
  20. and a charge is
  21. supplied to the
  22. spark plugs.  Once
  23. the engine is
  24. firing, the driver
  25. releases the key of
  26. the car and the
  27. starter will
  28. disengage.
