  7. ------------
  8. WorldTime for Windows (ver. 1.1a) is an easy-to-use worldwide clock
  9. utility that runs within the Microsoft Windows 3.0 environment.
  10.  
  11. WorldTime displays the current local time, Greenwich Mean Time,
  12. and the time in each of the five continental U.S. time zones.  In
  13. addition, two user-selected controls display the current time in any
  14. of over 100 metropolitan and geographic locations around the world.
  15. Finally, a user-defined control allows time display for a completely
  16. user-customizablelocation.  All configuration settings can be saved
  17. so as to be in effect each time the program is run.

  23. Program Files
  24. ------- -----
  25. The WorldTime package consists of three files:  WTIME.EXE, WTIME.INI,
  26. and WTIME.TXT.  WTIME.EXE and WTIME.INI comprise the program itself;
  27. the WTIME.TXT file contains program information, notes, and a
  28. registration form.
  29.  
  30. The main program file, WTIME.EXE, obtains configuration information
  31. from WTIME.INI each time the program is run, and writes any changes
  32. in your configuration to WTIME.INI each time you exit the program.
  33. For this reason, both files should be stored in the same directory
  34. when running WorldTime from a hard drive.
  35.

  37. Program Notes
  38. ------- -----
  39. WorldTime for Windows requires Microsoft Windows 3.0 or higher.
  40. Although WorldTime runs acceptably on systems equipped with EGA or
  41. Hercules graphics, we strongly recommend the higher resolution
  42. available on a VGA (color or mono) system.
  43.  
  44. WorldTime's relatively low memory overhead (~90 Kb) and modest screen
  45. refreshes make its performance satisfactory on virtually any computer
  46. capable of running Microsoft Windows 3.0+.
  47.  
  48.  
  49. WorldTime Setup
  50. --------- -----
  51. Setup and configuration for WorldTime is fairly straightforward.
  52. The most important thing to do BEFORE running WorldTime is to make
  53. sure your computer's system clock (DOS TIME and DATE) settings are
  54. accurate.  This can be done from the DOS prompt with the "TIME"
  55. commmand, through the use of several popular setup utilities, or
  56. (perhaps most conveniently) within Windows itself via the Control
  57. Panel.
  58.  
  59. For WorldTime to function correctly, your local time zone must be
  60. selected (active) in the Local Time Zone list box control.  Once this
  61. is done, all WorldTime calculations will be based on your computer's
  62. system clock, relative to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).  This selection
  63. need only be made once (assuming your computer is not moved to a
  64. different time zone).
  65.  
  66. Once configured, WorldTime displays your local time, Greenwich Mean
  67. Time, and the current time in the five major continental U.S. time
  68. zones.  Two User-Selected drop-down controls allow you to display
  69. the current time in any of 110 locations around the world.  A third
  70. control is completely User-Defined, allowing you to enter a custom
  71. location of your own choosing. Time setting in the User-Defined
  72. Location is controlled by the horizontal scroll bar (which may be
  73. blanked by setting to the extreme left position).
  74.  
  75. All configuration settings, including local time zone, User-Selected
  76. and User-Defined locations and times, are saved into the WTIME.INI
  77. file when you exit WorldTime.
  78.  
  79. Note:  Changes in your configuration will ONLY be saved to the
  80. WTIME.INI file if you exit via the "File/Exit" menu bar sequence.
  81. Closing WorldTime by double-clicking the control button in the
  82. upper-left corner (or using the Alt-F4 key combination) will exit
  83. the program WITHOUT saving any new settings.

  86. Daylight Savings Time Mode
  87. -------- ------- ---- ----
  88. New to this release of WorldTime for Windows is a user-enabled
  89. Daylight Savings Time mode.
  90.  
  91. If Daylight Savings Time is in effect in your local time zone,
  92. WorldTime should be run in DST mode. DST mode is toggled on and
  93. off via the menu bar "Options/DST Mode" selection; when active,
  94. it makes the necessary adjustments to WorldTime's calculations
  95. (again, assuming the user's computer system clock has been
  96. accurately updated to reflect the correct current time).
  97.  
  98. DST Mode "active" status is confirmed by a RED indicator located
  99. just to the right of the WorldTime globe logo.
  100.  
  101. Calculations for recognizing foreign (i.e. non-local time zone)
  102. Daylight Savings Time periods -- and there are SEVERAL in use in
  103. different parts of the world -- are handled within the program
  104. itself, and do not require user-configuration.
  105.  
  106. As with the other configuration settings, your local DST Mode
  107. status is written to WTIME.INI and maintained in effect for
  108. subsequent sessions.
  109.

  111. Daylight Savings Time Irregularities
  112. -------- ------- ---- --------------
  113. Daylight Savings Time is officially observed in the United
  114. States from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in
  115. October.  Even so, there are certain areas within the U.S. and
  116. its territories that DO NOT observe Daylight Savings Time.
  117. These include the states of Arizona, Hawaii, parts of Indiana,
  118. the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
  119.  
  120. As mentioned in the previous section, many countries in the world
  121. observe some form of Daylight Savings Time.  Unfortunately, the
  122. dates of observance differ widely from nation to nation (and, in
  123. the case of some countries in the Southern Hemisphere, occur at
  124. the opposite time of year).
  125.  
  126. Although WorldTime is capable of recognizing the Daylight Savings
  127. Time periods observed in each of the nations listed in the
  128. User-Selected Location controls, this requires that both the TIME
  129. and DATE settings of your computer's system clock be correct.
  130.  
  131. Note:  The Greenwich Mean Time display always reflects true
  132. Standard Time at the Prime Meridian, even during those periods
  133. when locations in that time zone are observing Daylight Savings
  134. Time.  For this reason, the displayed GMT time will, during such
  135. periods, actually differ from clock times shown for locations like
  136. London or Manchester, U.K., which obviously lie in the GMT+0 time
  137. zone.

  139. In some other countries, the "official" policy regarding Daylight
  140. Savings Time is extremely flexible, and subject to periodic change.
  141. Future releases of WorldTime will attempt to reflect any such
  142. changes.

  145. Upgrade Notice
  146. ------- ------
  147. Releases 1.1a and 1.1 of WorldTime for Windows represent a number
  148. of changes to the internal code of the original version, as well as
  149. the manner in which configuration information is handled.  For this
  150. reason, owners of the previous release should NOT use their old
  151. (ver. 1.0) WTIME.INI file with the new WTIME.EXE program.
  152.  
  153. In case of confusion, the WTIME.INI file can be displayed with
  154. Windows Notepad (or any DOS text editor or file browser).  Line one
  155. of the correct Release 1.1 INI file should include the following
  156. bracketed text:  [WTime1.1].
  157.  
  158. Please do not edit or overwrite the INI file while viewing!
  159.

  161. Product Registration
  162. ------- ------------
  163. WorldTime is shareware, not freeware.  Product registration is
  164. necessary if companies like ours are to continue providing quality
  165. software for the shareware marketplace.
  166.  
  167. Registered users of the distribution version of WorldTime (1.1a)
  168. receive by mail the WorldTime standard version (1.1), which loads
  169. and runs without the registration start-up screen.
  170.  
  171. Registration also entitles you to upgrade/update information for
  172. upcoming releases of WorldTime, as well as other new titles in our
  173. expanding product line.
