Registration Information
------------------------
BakupWiz is a copyrighted program protected by both U.S. and
international copyright law.
BakupWiz is distributed as shareware, which means if you've
downloaded it from a bulletin board or obtained it from a friend,
you can try it out to determine whether it meets your needs and
allow you to decide whether you'd like to keep it. Like all
shareware, if you do decide to keep BakupWiz, you must pay a
registration fee.
BakupWiz is also distributed through normal retail channels. If you
purchased a retail copy of BakupWiz, it includes a shareware disk
which you can share with your friends and associates.
If you obtained BakupWiz from a shareware disk vendor, an on-line
computer service or bulletin board, a friend or colleague, or
another similar source, you have an unregistered (trial) copy. You
are authorized to use this copy without charge for a limited period
of time under the terms of the BakupWiz license agreement. After
this time is up, you must register and pay for BakupWiz to continue
using it.
The registration fee for a single copy of BakupWiz is $59 payable
by MasterCard, VISA, or check in U.S. funds drawn on a U.S. bank.
You may register via Compuserve EMAIL or MCI Mail if you are using
MasterCard or VISA. Payment of this fee entitles you to:
o A disk with the latest version of BakupWiz, registered to you.
o One copy of the printed and bound BakupWiz manual.
o A free upgrade to the next version of BakupWiz.
o Technical support via electronic mail or telephone.
Network, site, and corporate licenses are also available; contact
PCX for more information.
If you purchased a complete copy of BakupWiz with printed manual
from a software dealer, your copy came with a registration card.
Return this card promptly to PCX to ensure you are registered with
us, and to receive technical support and notices of future
upgrades. If you purchased BakupWiz directly from PCX and paid the
full $59 fee, you are already registered, and no registration card
is necessary.

BakupWiz License Agreement
--------------------------
Copyright
---------
The BakupWiz program and all other programs and documentation
distributed or shipped with it are Copyright (c) 1987-1991 PCX, and
are protected by U.S. and international copyright law. In the rest
of this document, this collection of programs is referred to simply
as "BakupWiz". You are granted a license to use your copy of
BakupWiz only under the terms and conditions specified in this
license agree ment.
Definitions
-----------
BakupWiz is distributed in two forms. A "registered" copy of
BakupWiz is a copy distributed on diskette, purchased from PCX or
from a dealer, and which includes a serial number and the legend
"licensed" or "registered" in the program sign-on message and on
the diskette label. A "shareware" copy of BakupWiz is a copy
distributed on diskette or via an electronic bulletin board,
on-line service, or other electronic means, obtained from a
shareware disk vendor, or obtained from another individual, and
which displays the legend "shareware" in the program sign-on
message, and in most cases on the diskette label as well (if
applicable).
Shareware Copies
----------------
Shareware copies of BakupWiz are distributed to allow you to try
the program before you pay for it. They are Copyright (c) 1987-1991
PCX, and do not constitute "free" or "public domain" software. You
may use a shareware copy of BakupWiz at no charge for a trial
period of up to 21 days. If you wish to continue using BakupWiz
after that period, you must purchase a registered copy. If you
choose not to purchase a registered copy, you must stop using
BakupWiz, though you may keep copies and pass them along to others.

Registered Copies
-----------------
Registered copies of BakupWiz are distributed to those who have
purchased them. Your registered copy of BakupWiz may only be used
on the number of computers specified on the diskette label and
program sign-on screen.
Use of One Copy on Two Computers
--------------------------------
If you have a registered copy of BakupWiz which is licensed for use
on a single computer, you may install it on two computers used at
two different locations (for example, at work and at home),
provided there is no possibility that the two computers will be in
use at the same time, and provided that you yourself have purchased
BakupWiz, or if BakupWiz was purchased by your employer, that you
have your employer's explicit permission to install BakupWiz on two
systems as described in this paragraph. The right to install one
copy of BakupWiz on two computers is limited to copies originally
licensed for use on a single computer, and may not be used to
expand the number of systems covered under a multi-system license.
Use on Networks or Multiple Systems
------------------------------------
You may install your registered copy of BakupWiz on a computer
attached to a network, or remove it from one computer and install
it on a different one, provided there is no possibility that your
copy will be used by more users than it is licensed for. A "user"
is defined as one keyboard which is connected to a computer on
which BakupWiz is installed, regardless of whether or not the user
of the keyboard is aware of the installation or use of BakupWiz in
the system.
Making Copies
-------------
You may copy any version of BakupWiz for normal backup purposes,
and you may give copies of the shareware version to other
individuals, which they may also use and copy subject to the terms
of this agreement. If you copy the shareware version of BakupWiz
for others, you must include all of the files distributed with it,
including this one. You may not give copies of the registered
version to any other person for any purpose, and you may not make
any copies of the printed and bound BakupWiz manual without
explicit written permission from PCX.

Distribution Restrictions
-------------------------
You may NOT distribute BakupWiz other than through individual
copies of the shareware version passed to friends and associates
for their individual use. Specifically, you may not place BakupWiz
or any part of the BakupWiz package in any user group or commercial
library, or distribute it with any other product or as an incentive
to purchase any other product, without express written permission
from PCX, and you may not distribute for a fee, or in any way sell
copies of BakupWiz or any part of the BakupWiz package. If you are
a shareware disk vendor approved by the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP), you may place BakupWiz in your library without
prior written permission, provided you notify PCX within 15 days of
doing so; and provided your application has been fully approved in
writing by the ASP, and is not simply submitted or awaiting review.
----------------
Limited Warranty
----------------
PCX warrants to owners of registered copies of BakupWiz that the
software will substantially operate in accordance with the
description given in the documentation, and that the diskette and
manual will be free of physical defects which interfere with normal
use. For a period of 90 days from the date of your purchase of
BakupWiz, PCX will, at its sole option and subject to the
restrictions above and below, repair or replace any defective
item(s), or refund the purchase price of any diskette and/or manual
and/or any other parts or components of BakupWiz found to be
defective, if such defect is the fault of PCX and not the result of
misuse or abuse. Such a refund, repair, or replacement shall be
your sole remedy for any defects, program error(s), or
documentation error(s). In no event shall PCX be liable for any
special, incidental, consequential, indirect, or punitive damages
even if PCX has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
PCX is not responsible for lost profits or revenue, loss of use of
BakupWiz, loss of data, costs of recreating lost data, the costs of
any substitute equipment or program, or claims by any party other
than You. PCX MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,
INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. While this limited warranty
gives you specific legal rights, you may have others, which vary
from state to state.

Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION
=======================
This guide is intended to make using BakupWiz as simple as
possible. For best results, take a few minutes to acquaint yourself
with the information in this guide.
-----------------------
Some Important Features
-----------------------
Thank you for purchasing BakupWiz!
Is your vital data stored on your hard disk safe? What would happen
to your business if your hard disk "crashed" and you lost most or
all of your data? You say that you don't backup your hard disk very
often because you are too busy and it takes too long? BakupWiz is
your solution to all these problems.
The benefits of owning BakupWiz are many:
o Speed -- Your hard disk is backed up to diskette(s) quickly and
reliably.
o Flexibility -- You may back up all files on your hard disk, only
selected files, or any files that have changed since a specified
date and time.
o Reliability -- BakupWiz has been thoroughly tested on many
different machine configurations and operating conditions. For
additional assurance, you may instruct BakupWiz to verify all the
data that it has backed up.
o Network Compatibility -- Novell Netware and any NETBIOS
compatible networks are supported. The network's fileservers may
be backed up without requiring the users to logout from the
network. Under Netware, BakupWiz will backup and restore both
file and network security information. Netware 286 and Netware
386 including Apple File Protocol are supported.
o Security -- The security of your data is maximized by BakupWiz's
unique password system. This system is so secure that we strongly
recommend you devise a failsafe method of retaining your
password.
o Ease of Use -- BakupWiz is operated via a pull-down menu system.
Help lines and message windows provide additional information.
o Compatibility -- BakupWiz is 100% compatible with MSDOS/PCDOS

Chapter 3 USING BakupWiz
___________________________________________________________________
Chapter 3 USING BakupWiz
=========================
In this chapter you will find an overview of what BakupWiz does,
some background information on hard disks, strategies and different
ways of backing up, and how to operate BakupWiz.
--------------------
Overview of BakupWiz
--------------------
BakupWiz is a program that allows you to copy all or part of the
data on your hard disk to diskette(s). This will protect you from
any loss of data should your hard disk develop a problem. BakupWiz
is also extremely useful for archiving data and for fast data
transfer.
-----------------
Why Make Backups?
-----------------
Since you are using BakupWiz, you probably already have an idea of
why backups must be made. Unfortunately, many PC users never think
about backing up their hard disks until a disaster occurs; and then
it is too late! A cruel twist of fate seems to be that the more
important the data is, the less often users back it up. We at PCX
think that the reason for this lack of backup is that backups have
always been thought of as cumbersome and time consuming. That is
why we developed BakupWiz to be easy to use, reliable, and fast!
Here are some of the reasons backups must be made.
Hard Disk Problems
------------------
Modern hard disks are very reliable and should give you trouble
free service for many years. Unfortunately, like everything else in
this world, problems may occur from time to time:
o Head Crashes -- The mention of this phenomenom brings terror to
hard disk users. What happens is that one or more of the magnetic
heads, which normally "float" a few thousandths of an inch above
the disk surface, have made physical contact with a disk surface.
This condition is guaranteed to cause irretrievable loss of data
unless rigorous backups have been made! Normally the hard disk
will need to be replaced.
o Power Outages -- A power failure or fluctuation during a hard
___________________________________________________________________
Copyright 1991, PCX BakupWiz User's Guide / 5
Chapter 3 USING BakupWiz
___________________________________________________________________
disk write operation can also cause serious data corruption.
While this condition is not nearly as serious as a head crash and
usually causes no physical damage to the hard disk, you risk data
loss if you have no backups.
o Gradual Deterioration -- Over a period of many months or years of
use, hard disks may develop what are called "bad sectors". This
is not uncommon and, as a matter of fact, most hard disks shipped
from the manufacturer have some bad sectors inherent. You do not
see these because they are "mapped out" and no data is put on
them. If, however, at a later time a bad sector develops and that
sector contains data that is not backed up, you are again at
risk.
Operator Error
--------------
No matter how careful and well trained you are, errors will occur.
Let's say you wanted to erase all the files on a diskette in your
floppy drive A:. You might mean to type:
==> DEL A:*.*
But what would the consequences be if you mistakenly entered:
==> DEL *.*
You would have erased all the files in the root directory of your
hard disk instead. Even more damage could be done if you were to
mistakenly format your hard disk when you meant to format a floppy
diskette! Backups could save the day!
Accident and Theft
------------------
Suppose the building containing your computer burned to the ground.
Your data is gone unless you have a backup that you could easily
store at some other location from your computer system.
What if a burglar breaks in and steals your computer. He has also
got your data files and you had better be prepared with backups.
----------------------------
Different Ways of Backing Up
----------------------------
BakupWiz has different ways to protect your data. You can use it to
___________________________________________________________________
Copyright 1991, PCX BakupWiz User's Guide / 6
Chapter 3 USING BakupWiz
___________________________________________________________________
make a "full backup," which backs up the entire contents of your
hard disk including subdirectories and their files. Since on most
hard disks, only a few files actually change each day, you can also
use BakupWiz to make "partial backups." These will protect just the
files that have changed since the you made the last full backup.
-----------------------
Other Uses for BakupWiz
-----------------------
Your hard disk accumulates many files. Some of these files seldom
see use but they still occupy space. You have two choices: buy a
larger hard disk or remove some of those seldom used files. You can
use BakupWiz to backup these files and then safely delete them from
your hard disk. Should you ever need access to them, BakupWiz will
retrieve them for you.
Suppose you have a group of files that you need to send to someone
else, perhaps on a regular basis. Using BakupWiz to make a backup
of these files and having the recipient of the files simply use his
BakupWiz to restore them will prove to be much faster than other
methods.
------------------
BakupWiz Operation
------------------
To run BakupWiz you must either have added the directory where
BakupWiz is installed to your PATH or you must change your current
directory to BakupWiz's directory. To change the directory type:
==> CD \BW
If you have installed BakupWiz into a different directory,
substitute your particular directory name above. BakupWiz may now
be run by typing:
==> BW
BakupWiz will now be loaded into your computer's memory and present
the Main Menu.
---------------
The Menu System
---------------
All of BakupWiz's menus have a similar appearance. Please refer to

the Main Menu for the following discussion.
Main Menu Windows
-----------------
BakupWiz divides the display into several functional areas called
windows. The windows visible on the Main Menu are:
o Menu Selection Area -- At the very top of your screen you will
see a line listing the commands that may be issued.
o Disk Information Window -- On the left side of your display just
below the middle you will see a boxed area. This area shows your
current drive and path name, the total capacity of the selected
disk, and the amount of space used on the disk.
o General Information Window -- The boxed area immediately to the
right of the Disk Information Window will show you the name of
the network server you are currently logged onto. It will be
blank if you are not operating on a network, are not logged into
any server, or are using a version of BakupWiz that has no
network support. This area also shows the buffer size that
BakupWiz has available for storing your data as it is backed up
and restored. The line labeled Function shows the name of the
current menu in use.
o Help Line -- The second line from the bottom of the display shows
helpful information pertaining to the current operation.
o Program Version Line -- This bottom line on the display shows you
the BakupWiz name and version as well as the current time at the
far right.
Additional Display Windows
--------------------------
During Backup, Restore, Directory, and Verify operations additional
windows are displayed. Please refer to the Full Backup Screen for
the following discussion.
o Diskette Information Window -- This section of the display will
show the name you have assigned to a FileSet, the sequential
volume and set number, the date and time the FileSet was created,
and the number of files and bytes contained in the FileSet.
o The Session Information Window -- This window will show the time

Chapter 4 BACKING UP
=====================
This chapter will explain the different ways that you can use
BakupWiz to backup up your files, the various options that control
the process, and an explanation of what BakupWiz is doing during
this time.
----------------
How BackUp Works
----------------
BakupWiz goes through a defined sequence of steps and prompts. Most
of these are the same no matter which backup method you choose.
First, let's get BakupWiz running so you can try things out as you
read along. If you have not already done so, execute BakupWiz and
select the Backup command from the Main Menu 1.
The Backup Menu has four command selections:
o Full -- This command will lead you through a backup of all the
files on one or more hard disks or network volumes.
o Selective -- Selecting this command will allow you to backup only
the files of your choosing. The various methods of choosing the
files will be discussed later in this chapter.
o Options -- The various optional parameters that control the
backup process are displayed and changed via this command.
o Quit -- Execution of this command will return you to the
Main Menu. Pressing ESC will have the same effect.
Selecting either Full or Selective allows you to begin a backup.
BakupWiz will then ask you to insert a backup diskette, it will
check its format, and give you the opportunity to change diskettes
if the one you inserted contains data. You will then be given the
opportunity to name and password protect the FileSet this backup
session will create. If a Full Backup was selected, you will now
specify which DOS or network volumes you wish to backup. If you
have chosen Selective Backup, you will now enter the specifications
for the files you wish to include as well as ones you may wish to
exclude. Once you have selected the files you wish to backup,
BakupWiz will scan your volumes for information on the files you
specified. As it is scanning, BakupWiz is building a temporary file
on your hard disk containing this information as well as keeping
you informed of the progress of the scan. Immediately upon
completion of the scan, BakupWiz begins the backup. You will be
asked to insert additional diskettes as existing ones are filled.

Chapter 4 BACKING UP
___________________________________________________________________
BakupWiz will tell you when it is finished.
-----------------
Starting a BackUp
-----------------
You must select either the Full or Selective command from the
Backup Menu to begin a backup.
The First Backup Diskette
-------------------------
After you issue a backup command, BakupWiz will request you to
insert the first backup diskette. A window will appear in the
center of your display.
At this time place the first diskette you want to write the backup
on into your diskette drive and respond with the letter "C".
Entering "Q" or ESC will take you back to the Backup Menu.
BakupWiz will now determine if the diskette is correctly formatted
and if it contains data. Should the diskette not be formatted
properly, BakupWiz will do it for you automatically. Formatting
diskettes is discussed fully in Chapter 9.
BakupWiz employs a formatting procedure that is superior to the
normal DOS format program's. In order to use this procedure,
BakupWiz will format any diskette the first time it uses it, even
if it was previously formatted properly by DOS.
If the diskette you inserted already contains data, BakupWiz wants
to make sure that you really want to overwrite and thus destroy the
data on the diskette. If the diskette contains a previous BakupWiz
FileSet, a window will appear in the center of your display.
This window tells you when the FileSet on the diskette was created
as well as the name you gave the FileSet. You must now tell
BakupWiz whether you want to Overwrite the old FileSet thus
destroying it or Switch to a different diskette.
If the diskette contained data that was not a BakupWiz FileSet, a
window will appear.
This window warns you that the diskette contains data. You must now
tell BakupWiz whether you want to Overwrite the data or Switch to a
different diskette.

Chapter 4 BACKING UP
___________________________________________________________________
Naming the FileSet
------------------
Whenever BakupWiz performs a backup, it labels the data by marking
the diskette with the date and time the backup was created.
BakupWiz also allows you to assign a name to the FileSet to make it
easier for you to identify it in the future. A window will appear
in the center of your display.
The label can be any remark or other identifying information up to
32 characters in length. To enter the label, simply type it in and
hit ENTER.
Password Protecting the FileSet
-------------------------------
To maximize the security of the data, BakupWiz offers a unique
password system. Once a password has been established and verified
during backup, that password becomes vital to the process of
accessing the data. If you lose your password, your data is lost
<197> for good. This system is so secure that we strongly recommend
you devise a failsafe method of retaining your password(s) before
establishing them. A window will appear in the center of your
display.
If your data does not require maximum security or you have doubts
about your current methods of retaining passwords, you can hit
ENTER now to bypass the password option. Otherwise BakupWiz will
accept a password up to 8 characters in length. For security
reasons, the password is not displayed on the screen as you enter
it.
Once you have entered the password, BakupWiz will ask you to verify
it. A window will appear in the center of your display.
This verification feature enables BakupWiz to compare the two
entries, double checking that you typed what you meant to type! If
the two entries do not match, BakupWiz will refuse to log the
password and a window will appear in the center of your display.
You may hit any key and BakupWiz will ask you to enter a password
again.
-----------------------------
Selecting the Files to Backup
-----------------------------
You got to this point by choosing either the Full or Selective

Backup command. Full backup will backup all the files on one or
more DOS or network volumes and you will select which volumes to
back up. Selective backup will allow you to enter the specific
files and directories you wish to include and exclude from the
backup.
Full Backup
-----------
BakupWiz will now ask you to specify the particular DOS or network
volumes you want to backup. A window will appear in the center of
your display.
Enter the drive letters you wish to backup.
Selective Backup
-----------------
BakupWiz will ask you to specify the particular files and
directories you want to backup. A window will appear in the center
of your display.
You can now enter up to 32 filenames and directories you wish to
backup. Simply enter each filename followed by ENTER. The filenames
you enter must be valid DOS filenames; they may be regular or
ambiguous filenames (wildcards); and you may specify the complete
path or only a portion of it thereby including a broad category of
files. If you have any files listed in the Backup Inclusion List
option and have that option enabled, the list of those files will
be inserted automatically in this window before you enter any new
file specifications. For a more detailed explanation of filenames,
consult your Operating System manual. When you have entered all the
filenames, depress ENTER again.
BakupWiz now will allow you to specify particular files and
directories you want to exclude from the backup. A window will
appear in the center of your display.
You can now enter up to 32 filenames and directories to be
excluded. If you have any files listed in the Backup Exclusion List
option and have that option enabled, the list of those files will
be inserted automatically in this window before you enter any new
files specifications. When you have entered all the filenames,
depress ENTER again.

The Scan
--------
BakupWiz will now scan your hard disk looking for all files to be
included in the backup. If no files eligible for backup are found,
BakupWiz will display the error window.
You will be returned to the Backup Menu after you hit a key.
------------------
The Backup Process
------------------
BakupWiz will now backup the files onto diskettes beginning with
the one you have already inserted. As the backup proceeds,
information on the files and amount of data backed up is displayed
and also recorded in a special file called BW.LOG
Changing Diskettes
------------------
When BakupWiz runs out of space on the current backup diskette it
will ask you to insert a fresh diskette.
o Remove the old diskette and label it.
o Insert a new diskette.
---------------------------------
Interacting With BW During Backup
---------------------------------
If your view of any of the status windows is obscured by a message
window, you can remove the message window temporarily by pressing
F9. To bring back the message window, press any key.
Should you need to "stop the action" for some reason, you can abort
the backup and return to the DOS command line by pressing
CtrlBreak. BakupWiz will ask you to confirm your request by
displaying a window.
If you choose not to abort the backup, BakupWiz will continue;
otherwise it will display an abort window.

are ignored.
Only Changed Files
------------------
With this parameter set to "Y", BakupWiz will only backup files
that have been changed since the last backup. Otherwise, all files
specified will be backed up.
Reset Changed Files
-------------------
If this option is set to "Y", for every file it has backed up,
BakupWiz will reset the modified file bit; thus indicating that the
file has not changed since the last backup.

Chapter 5 RESTORING
====================
This chapter will explain the different ways that you can use
BakupWiz to restore your files, the various options that control
the process, and an explanation of what BakupWiz is doing during
this time.
-----------------
How Restore Works
-----------------
BakupWiz goes through a defined sequence of steps and prompts. Most
of these are the same no matter which restore method you choose.
First, let's get BakupWiz running so you can try things out as you
read along. If you have not already done so, execute BakupWiz and
select the Restore command from the Main Menu 1.
The Restore Menu has four command selections:
o Full -- This command will lead you through a restore of all the
files from a FileSet to your hard disk.
o Selective -- Selecting this command will allow you to restore
only the files of your choosing. The various methods of choosing
the files will be discussed later in this chapter.
o Options -- The various optional parameters that control the
restore process are displayed and changed via this command.
o Quit -- Execution of this command will return you to the
Main Menu. Pressing ESC will have the same effect.
Selecting either Full or Selective allows you to begin a restore.
BakupWiz will then ask you to insert the first diskette from the
backup FileSet you wish to restore. It will demand you enter a
password if the FileSet was password protected. Then it will
display the identifying information from the FileSet and ask that
you approve it continue with that FileSet or switch to another
FileSet. If you have chosen Full restore, BakupWiz will select all
the files from the FileSet for restore. If you have chosen
Selective restore, you will now enter the specifications for the
files you wish to include as well as ones you may wish to exclude.
Once you have selected the files you wish to restore, BakupWiz will
scan the directory of files that it has retrieved from your
diskette and mark the selected ones for restore. It will give you
the opportunity to view the selected list of files. Then you will
be asked to specify the disk volume BakupWiz should restore the
files onto. The restore now begins with the first diskette already

Overwrite Existing Files
------------------------
With this parameter set to "Y", BakupWiz will overwrite any files
on your hard disk with the same name as the file being restored. If
the value is "N", existing files will be left intact and the file
with the same name on the FileSet will be skipped. The value "A"
will cause BakupWiz to ask your permission each time it encounters
the situation.
Overwrite Changed Files
-----------------------
With this parameter set to "Y", BakupWiz will replace any files on
your hard disk with the same name as the file being restored even
if the file on the hard disk has been changed since the last
backup. If the value is "N", existing files will be left intact and
the file with the same name on the FileSet will be skipped. The
value "A" will cause BakupWiz to ask your permission each time it
encounters the situation.
Use New Directory
-----------------
If this option is set to "N", BakupWiz will restore the files to
the original directory structure from which they were backed up.
Any intermediate directories are created as necessary. Setting this
value to "Y" will results in all the files being restored to the
single directory specified in the next parameter. The value "T" is
similar in function to "Y" but that the subdirectory structure of
the original backup is retained but placed under the directory
specified in the next parameter.
Edit Restore Path
-----------------
This option entry is used to enter and edit the path name referred
to in the previous parameter. To change this parameter, select this
entry and press ENTER. BakupWiz will open a new window.
You may enter and edit the path name as suggested by the help area
of the window.

Use All FileSets
----------------
When this parameter has the value "Y", BakupWiz will restore
selected files not just from the first FileSet, but also from any
appended FileSets. A "N" value uses just the first FileSet.
Use Exclusion List
------------------
BakupWiz allows you to specify a list of files that will be
excluded from every Selective Restore. This entry controls whether
this list will be used for this particular restore.

Chapter 8 CONFIGURING BakupWiz
===============================
This chapter will explain how to configure the default operating
parameters of BakupWiz.
----------------
How Config Works
----------------
First, let's get BakupWiz running so you can try things out as you
read along. If you have not already done so, execute BakupWiz and
select the Config command from the Main Menu 1.
This screen consists of the current default parameters and some
help information in the bottom section. You may now use the control
keys listed in the help section to move around the screen and edit
parameters. The functions of all the parameters are described
below.
Drive Select
------------
BakupWiz can use your A: or B: diskette drives or an arbitrary DOS
path. Enter "A", "B", or "/" to command the use of a DOS path.
Edit DOS Backup/Restore Path
----------------------------
This option entry is used to enter and edit the path name referred
to in the previous parameter. To change this parameter, select this
entry with any of the editing keys shown in the help area below and
then press ENTER. BakupWiz will open a new window.
Diskette Type
-------------
BakupWiz supports four diskette formats and is able to choose the
most appropriate for your computer. Should your computer have a
non-standard configuration or you wish to use a different format
you may select as follows:
o "H" -- 1.2 megabyte 5.25" diskette format;
o "D" -- 360 kilobyte 5.25" diskette format;
___________________________________________________________________
Copyright 1991, PCX BakupWiz User's Guide / 32
Chapter 8 CONFIGURING BakupWiz
___________________________________________________________________
o "1" -- 1.4 megabyte 3.5" diskette format; and
o "7" -- 720 kilobyte 3.5" diskette format.
Format Each Diskette
--------------------
Before using a diskette for backup, BakupWiz will determine if it
is correctly formatted. If it is not properly formatted, BakupWiz
will automatically format it for you. Should you desire to have
BakupWiz format each diskette, even if it is already formatted, set
this parameter to "Y".
Video Mode
----------
BakupWiz can determine the default video parameter. In some
circumstances you may want to alter this. The allowable values are
Space, indicating that BakupWiz should determine the mode, and "M",
forcing monochrome use only.
Use Sequential Logfiles
-----------------------
BakupWiz can create logfiles in two different ways. The normal
default is to always name the logfile BW.LOG. In this case whenever
you run BakupWiz, the previous logfile is destroyed when the
current one is created. Should you wish to keep the previous
logfiles, set this parameter to "Y". BakupWiz will now generate a
logfile with a name in the form of BWyyjjj.Lnn where yy is the
current year, jjj is the julian date, and nn is a sequential number
that is incremented each time BakupWiz is run during one day.
Edit Logfile Path
-----------------
By default, BakupWiz will create its logfile in the current
directory when BakupWiz was executed. This parameter can be used to
select a different directory where you wish these logfiles placed.
To change this parameter, position to it using the control keys and
then hit ENTER. A smaller window will appear in the center of your
display.
Simply enter the desired path name here and depress F10 when done.

Chapter 8 CONFIGURING BakupWiz
___________________________________________________________________
Quiet Mode
----------
This parameter controls whether BakupWiz will emit a tone to
indicate an error condition. When set to "Y", there will be no
tones.
---------------------
Saving the Parameters
---------------------
When all the changes have been made, depress F10 to accept them. A
window will appear in the center of your display.
Entering "N" will cause BakupWiz to only use the changed parameters
for this particular run of BakupWiz and then discard them. If you
wish to retain the changed values permanently, enter "Y" to this
query. In this case another window will appear in the center of
your display.
This window shows the path name from which BakupWiz was executed
and the path name to write the modified parameters to. Normally
simply enter F10 to accept these as is. If you change the
destination path, another copy of BW.EXE will be created with the
modified parameters imbedded.

At this time place the diskette you wish to format into your
diskette drive and respond with the letter "C". Entering "Q" or ESC
will take you back to the Main Menu. BakupWiz will now read the
identifying and control information from the diskette.
Password Protected FileSets
---------------------------
If the diskette you inserted contains a BakupWiz FileSet and that
FileSet is password protect ed, BakupWiz will now require you to
enter the exact password. A window will appear in the center of
your display.
Enter the password now. For security reasons, the password is not
displayed on the screen as you enter it. If the password is
incorrect, an error will be indicated and the password entry window
will reappear.
Approving the Diskette
----------------------
If the inserted diskette was part of a FileSet, BakupWiz will now
display the date and time the FileSet was created as well as the
name you may have assigned to the FileSet. A window will appear in
the center of your display.
You must now enter "F" to continue with this diskette or "S" or ESC
to cause BakupWiz to switch to a different diskette. Once you have
approved the diskette, BakupWiz will start the format operation.
