  1. *** Welcome to BriteLine! ***
  2.  
  3. BriteLine makes it easier to locate the cursor and follow the cursor 
  4. across a line of information by highlighting the line the cursor is on.  
  5. You can make the line whatever color you want (within the limits of your 
  6. display of course) and change the size of the cursor if you so desire.  
  7. You can also turn BriteLine on and off at will.  
  8.  
  9. BriteLine is shareware.  As such you are freely give the program in order 
  10. that you may evaluate it before purchasing it.  However, if you decide to 
  11. continue using it you have an obligation to become a registered user.

  24.            cursor size, row color, switch "hot key", and more.
  25.  
  26.         2. Technical support and the latest version of BriteLine.

  28.         3. The "RSE Shareware disk" which includes copies of our 
  29.            other shareware programs including PC-Directory, PC-
  30.            FileNotes, Remind Me!, Conjecture, Nabbit and PC-Images. 
  31.            Because I'm trying to save space I won't go into these 
  32.            programs any further, except to say that this disk alone 
  33.            is well worth the registration fee.

  35. Writing quality software and supporting it takes time and money.  Your 
  36. registration fees keep us going.  If you like BriteLine, register.  We need 
  37. your support.

  39. Because BriteLine is shareware you are encouraged to give copies of it to 
  40. any one you want as long as you don't modify the program (or these 
  41. Instructions) and you don't charge for the copies.  The only exception to 
  42. the last rule is for ASP approved shareware vendors who may charge an 
  43. amount to cover copying and distribution costs. 
  44.  
  45. *** Getting Started ***
  46.  
  47. You run BriteLine by going to the sub-directory or floppy where you've 
  48. copied BL.COM and entering "BL" at the DOS prompt.  BriteLine is a very 
  49. small TSR program.  What this means is that it stays in memory continuing 
  50. to work even when other programs are running.  It is very small, using 
  51. less that 1K of memory (this version uses around 800 bytes). 
  52.  
  53. Load BriteLine at this time.  Notice the line at the cursor is now black on 
  54. white instead of white on black.  I realize that this is a pretty boring 
  55. "color" but it's compatable with a wide range of monitors.  If you have a 
  56. color monitor you can have the line highlighted in red by entering "BL/R" 
  57. when loading BriteLine.  However the best way to get colors is to become a 
  58. registered user.  Registered users can change the default cursor/line colors 
  59. to any of 127 different combinations from yellow on blue to green on purple. 
  60.  
  61. Also notice right below the copyright notice the phrase "Switch Hot Key:  
  62. Alt O".  This is telling you that by pressing the Alt key and the O (oh) 
  63. key at the same time you can switch BriteLine off or on.  Try it a couple 
  64. of times.  Registered users can change this "Switch Hot Key" by using the 
  65. configuration program. 
  66. BriteLine only works in text modes.  It automatically deactivates during 
  67. graphics modes. 
  68.  
  69. Registered users can change the color of the cursor line and the size of 
  70. the cursor by using the configuration program. 
  71.  
  72. BriteLine remains in memory until you re-boot or turn off your computer.
  73.  
  74. *** Flashing ***
  75.  
  76. Sometimes when you type in data, the cursor line briefly flashes at each 
  77. keystroke, or maybe only when you use certain keystrokes.  This occurs 
  78. because the host program is writing data at that line in a different 
  79. color.  BriteLine immediately changes the color to its color, but you may 
  80. notice a small flash when it does.  There's really nothing we can do 
  81. about it.  If you find it annoying then simply turn BriteLine off by 
  82. pressing "Alt O". 
  83.  
  84. *** CGA flicker ***
  85.  
  86. If you have a CGA monitor and the screen flickers when you use BriteLine, 
  87. then you can eliminate most if not all of the flicker by invoking BL with 
  88. the "/C" option.  In other words enter "BL/C" at the DOS prompt when you 
  89. initially load BriteLine.  Registered users can also use the 
  90. configuration program to have BriteLine default to the "/C" option by 
  91. selecting "Yes" on the "Flickering?" line. 
  92.     
  93. Using the "/C" option will slow down your computers processing capability 
  94. somewhat since the program must wait for the vertical retrace signal of 
  95. your monitor to occur.  In addition, on some slower machines (like the 
  96. original PCs and XTs) a little bit of flicker may still remain even when 
  97. using the "/C" option.  Unfortunately, eliminating that last little bit 
  98. would require a huge penalty in your computers processing capability.  A 
  99. price you don't want to pay. 
  100.  
  101. *** The Configuration Program ***
  102.  
  103. Registered users can change the color of the cursor line, the size of the 
  104. cursor, and the Switch Hot Key by using the configuration program.  You 
  105. can also have BriteLine default to the "/C" option as discussed 
  106. previously.
  107.  
  108. *  Make sure CONFIG.COM is on the same disk or sub-directory that BL.COM is.  
  109. *  If BriteLine is in memory then turn it off by pressing the Switch Hot 
  110.    Key (Alt O by default).
  111. *  Enter "CONFIG" at the DOS prompt.  
  112. *  Use the up and down arrow keys to select the item you want to change.  
  113. *  Press the left or right arrow keys to change the value of the selected 
  114.    item.  
  115. *  Press Escape when you're finished.  
  116.  
  117. If BriteLine is in memory then you'll have to re-boot and reload 
  118. BriteLine to notice the changes.
