  1. ** SAVING NEW ADDED DATA
  2.  
  3. When entering or modifying data in the ADD, COPY/MODIFY, or MODIFY
  4. screens, the data is saved to the database when you exit the screen by
  5. pressing the ESC key.
  6.  
  7. However, the MENU ID AND SERVICE NAME field must be non-blank, since this
  8. is the information that will appear on the Toll-Free Service menus.  It is
  9. also used to relate the memo field to the Toll-Free service information.
  10.  
  11. If this field is blank, the data will not be saved.
  12.  
  13. Note that "MENU ID and SERVICE NAME" is one field, and you are free to
  14. design your own method for taking advantage of the fact that all entries
  15. are displayed alphabetically in the menus.
  16.  
  17. ** COPYING DATA TO FORM A NEW ENTRY
  18.  
  19. The COPY / MODIFY option is designed to allow you to quickly copy most of
  20. the information from an existing entry into a new entry.
  21.  
  22. The COPY / MODIFY option will make a copy of an existing Toll-Free service
  23. entry, then blank out the "MENU ID and SERVICE NAME" field, and place you
  24. in the modify mode for the new entry.  
  25.  
  26. If you just press the Esc key right away, the copied entry will not be
  27. added, since the "MENU ID and SERVICE NAME" field is still blank.  You
  28. must at least fill in that field, and you will probably want to modify the
  29. phone number also.
  30.  
  31. ** PLACING A CALL
  32.  
  33. Press F4 from the ADD, BROWSE, COPY/MODIFY, or MODIFY screen. 
  34. FONE800(tm) will use your modem to dial the number.  Most modems have a
  35. speaker over which you will hear the number being dialed.  When you hear
  36. the dialing complete, then pick up your telephone handset to make the
  37. voice connection, and press any key on the computer keyboard to
  38. disconnect the modem from the circuit.
  39.  
  40. If you do not pick up your handset BEFORE pressing a key to disconnect
  41. the modem, the connection will be lost! This is how you abort the call,
  42. if you suddenly decide you didn't really want to make it.
  43.  
  44. You must have a modem attached to your computer, and have specified the
  45. correct port number during the SETUP, to use the automatic dial feature.
  46.  
  47. If you do not have a modem, you can still use FONE800(tm).  Just place
  48. the call the way you would normally, using the data in your database. 
  49. Then enter the memo as a permanent record of your conversation.  (See
  50. ENTERING/EDITING A NOTE PAD MEMO).
  51. ** ENTERING/EDITING A NOTE PAD MEMO
  52.  
  53. From the PLACE CALL screen, you may enter a new memo, or edit a previous
  54. memo in the memo field.  To make an initial entry, just type the text.
  55. FONE800(tm) will automatically add the date and time of your entry to the
  56. memo.  To see previous memo entries, press the F3 key, and your current
  57. memo will be replaced by the previous memo in the NOTE PAD field.  Press
  58. F3 again, and the current memo will re-appear.  The F3 key can be used
  59. to toggle back and forth between the current memo and the previous memos.
  60.  
  61. The following standard editing keys are supported:
  62.   Cursor Up/Down/Left/Right
  63.   Page Up/Down
  64.   Home/End
  65.   Tab/Shift-Tab
  66.   Insert/Delete/Backspace
  67.   Enter/Return
  68.  
  69. The following additional keys are also supported:
  70.   Ctrl-Y to delete a line
  71.   Ctrl-N to insert a blank
  72.   Ctrl-Cursor Left/Right to move a word at a time
  73.  
  74. There IS a limit to the memory which can be allocated to the memo data,
  75. and it will be different for each user, depending upon how the computer
  76. is configured.  We suggest that you limit your total memo entries for
  77. each Toll-Free service to about 60 lines.
  78.  
  79. As the number of Toll-Free services which also have memos increases, so
  80. will the time to find a particular memo increase.  If you experience
  81. an unacceptable delay between the time you select a service for the
  82. PLACE CALL screen, and the time the screen appears, you can decrease
  83. this time by making hard copies of some of your infrequently-used memos,
  84. then deleting those memos.
  85. ** PRINTING A REPORT
  86.  
  87. FONE800(tm) will print a one-page report containing all information
  88. entered about a toll-free service.  Select PRINT from the main menu,
  89. then select the toll-free service to be printed.
  90.  
  91. FONE800(tm) does not generate any specialized printer graphics, so the
  92. report can be printed on almost any printer.
  93.  
  94. You can also print a report for the service displayed on the BROWSE
  95. screen by pressing the F6 key.
  96. ** DELETING/UN-DELETING ENTRIES
  97.  
  98. Choose DELETE from the main menu, then choose the Toll-Free service
  99. entry to delete.  FONE800(tm) will surround the service name with
  100. the characters « and », and mark the entry for deletion.
  101.  
  102. With « in front of the name, the entry will now sort to the last
  103. page of the menu.  If you decide to change your mind, at this point,
  104. you can still un-delete the entry by choosing UN-DELETE from the 
  105. utility menu, then selecting the entry to un-delete.
  106.  
  107. Once the database has been purged of deleted entries with the
  108. PURGE option on the utility menu, the items are no longer available
  109. for un-deletion.
  110.  
  111. ** DELETING A NOTE PAD MEMO ENTRY
  112.  
  113. FONE800(tm) remembers your note pad memo entries and makes them
  114. available on the PLACE CALL screen with the use of the F3 key.
  115. If you wish to conserve disk space by deleting old memo entries,
  116. just use the Ctrl-Y (delete line) sequence to delete all lines
  117. in the old memo entry.
  118.  
  119. ** BACKING UP YOUR DATABASE
  120.  
  121. It is very important that you backup your Toll-Free service database
  122. periodically.  You have no idea of the number of excuses we and
  123. others have used when soliciting help from the experts in trying
  124. to recover lost data.
  125.  
  126. The basic rule should be to ask yourself periodically, "How comfortable
  127. am I with losing everything I've done since I last backed up my data?" 
  128.  
  129. If the answer is "Not very comfortable", then it's probably time to
  130. backup your data again.
  131.  
  132. The simple way is to copy your database to a formatted diskette with 
  133. the following DOS commands:
  134.  
  135.   COPY F800DB.DAT A:
  136.   COPY F800NDX.DAT A:
  137.   COPY F800MEMO.DAT A:
  138.  
  139. If you own a commercial backup utility, then by all means, use it!
  140.  
  141. ** RE-INDEXING THE DATABASE
  142.  
  143. The database menu is driven from a sorted database index on the
  144. MENU ID and SERVICE NAME field.  If some sort of anomaly occurs,
  145. and the menu appears to not reflect the data in the database,
  146. you should choose RE-INDEX from the utility menu.
  147.  
  148. Some things which could cause such an anomaly include:
  149.  - Shutting off the power while in the FONE800(tm) program
  150.  - Re-booting while in the FONE800(tm) program
  151.  - A disk error during execution of the program
  152.  
  153. ** PURGING DELETED ENTRIES
  154.  
  155. Choose PURGE from the utility menu, and all Toll-Free service entries
  156. marked for deletion are purged from the database forever, thereby
  157. compacting the database.
  158.  
  159. ** CALLING 800 INFORMATION
  160.  
  161. Press F9 from the ADD, COPY/MODIFY, PLACE CALL, or MODIFY screen, and
  162. FONE800(tm) will dial the 800 information number (1-800-555-1212).
  163.  
  164. The call is handled in the same way as described under PLACING A CALL.
  165. ** SETTING UP YOUR MODEM
  166.  
  167. FONE800(tm) provides automatic telephone number dialing for those users
  168. who have a modem connected to their computer on serial ports 1 or 2.
  169.  
  170. If you do not have a modem, you can still use FONE800(tm).  Just place
  171. the call the way you would normally, using the data in your database.
  172. Then use the other features of FONE800(tm) to conveniently record your
  173. Toll-Free service data.
  174.  
  175. If you have a modem attached to your computer, you must specify the
  176. serial communications port to which it is connected.
  177.  
  178. On the SETUP screen:
  179.      Enter "A" if you do not have a modem
  180.      Enter "B" if the modem is connected to serial port 1
  181.      Enter "C" if the modem is connected to serial port 2
  182.

  184. ** SELECTING PULSE OR DIAL TONE
  185.  
  186. You may select the method that FONE800(tm) uses for dialing numbers.  On
  187. the setup screen, enter a "Y" after "Tone Dialing" if your modem and
  188. phone line both support tone dialing.  Otherwise enter "N", and
  189. FONE800(tm) will send pulse dialing commands to the modem when dialing.
  190.  
  191. Just a reminder:  You must have a modem connected to your computer,
  192. and have specified the port to which it is connected, for auto-dialing
  193. to work.

  196. ** SETTING UP SCREEN COLORS
  197.  
  198. If you have a color monitor, you may choose your favorite colors
  199. for the Entry screen, the Menus and Announcements, and the Exit screen.
  200. The Data Input screen, Browse screen, Modify screen, Call In Progress
  201. screen, and Setup screen colors are predetermined by the program.
  202.  
  203. When you first enter FONE800(tm), the program will automatically
  204. determine what type of monitor interface hardware you have.  Based
  205. on that information, the SETUP screen will contain a default
  206. value for the "Color Monitor" field.  The field will contain a "Y"
  207. if FONE800(tm) has determined that you probably have a color monitor,
  208. or an "N" if the program thinks you have a monochrome monitor.
  209.  
  210. You can override this value by moving to that field with the TAB key,
  211. and specifying a "Y" if you have a color monitor, or an "N" if you
  212. have a monochrome monitor.
  213. ** USER MANUAL
  214.  
  215. I have prepared a complete, and well documented Users Manual for
  216. FONE800(tm).  The User Manual is very detailed, and was written to serve
  217. as a tutorial/instructional guide for the Novice PC User, or as a handy
  218. reference text for the more experienced PC User.  To encourage New
  219. Registrations I will send out copies of the User Manual for FONE800(tm),
  220. by return mail, on a PC compatible diskette.  The User Manual is in
  221. Standard ASCII format suitable for printing.  For a limited time I will
  222. provide Registered Users with the FONE800(tm) User Manual on diskette for
  223. just the shipping and handling charge of $5.00.  The List Price of the
  224. User Manual is $11.95 plus Sales Tax, plus the shipping/handling fee of

  236. You can shell out to DOS, and use DOS commands outside of FONE800(tm),
  237. by pressing the F8 key from the PLACE CALL screen.  Note that FONE800(tm)
  238. uses a significant amount of RAM memory, therefore some memory-intensive
  239. DOS commands may not have enough RAM left to function.
  240.  
  241. When you are done using DOS commands, type EXIT to return to FONE800(tm).
  242.  
  243. Be sure to change directory (cd) back to the FONE800(tm) directory before
  244. exiting from DOS back to FONE800(tm).  If you don't, FONE800(tm) may not
  245. be able to find its associated database files.
