- Registration
- ==============================================================
- ClipHound is not free software. If you use it regularly, you
- must register it. ClipHound will cease to operate after 60 days
- if you do not register it.
-
- Registration is $15. We normally will NOT send you a disk.
- Instead, keep up to date with the latest version of ClipHound by
- downloading it from our website. If you MUST have a disk, you
- must pay $3 extra in shipping costs in the US, and $5 extra
- shipping elsewhere.
-
- We accept money orders and checks through the mail only. These
- must be made out to "Albino Frog Software" and payable in US
- funds on a US bank. It simply costs us too much to deposit
- foreign valuta in our bank account to make a $15 registration
- worthwhile. If these instructions aren't followed, we will
- not be able to process your order. For this reason, we highly
- recommend overseas registrations use a credit card.
-
- We accept MasterCard, VISA and Discover cards, and their
- international equivalents. We can take your order over the phone
- from 9am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time (-5 GMT). You may also fax
- us at the same phone number any time of the day or night. We
- also accept credit card orders via email, and assure you that
- this is at least as safe as a phone order, and much safer than an
- in-person credit transaction.
-
- Once your order is processed, you will receive a registration
- code: If you mailed or faxed your order, we will mail you or email
- you your registration code. If you wish email response, please
- include an Internet valid email address.
-
- If you order by email, we will return your registration code via
- return email within 24 hours.
-
- If you order by phone, we will process your credit card
- immediately and give you your registration code on the same phone
- call.
-
-
- License
- =================================================================
- Your ClipHound license will grant you permission touse ClipHound
- on as many computers as you want, but for just one person.
- That is, ClipHound is licensed to you, not to a machine. If you
- use a laptop computer and a desktop machine, you may install
- ClipHound on both, and pay one license fee. However, you may not
- share your copy of ClipHound with anyone else. That inwolves
- additional users, and every user must license ClipHound.
-
- If you're using ClipHound, and someone else's name is on the title
- bar, you're breaking the law! Please register ClipHound for
- yourself--you're using it and interested in it, so you ought to
- pay for it.
-
-
-
- Support
- ==========================================================
- ClipHound has been thoroughly tested, and is not a frontline
- application. Breakage should be rare and inconsequential as far
- as life-and-death goes, so an immediate response should never be
- required.
-
- Support for ClipHound is available via fax, email, and surface
- mail. Voice support is NOT available, because the technician
- (me) has a full time job elsewhere and can't take calls at work.
- And when I get home, I'm too bloody beat to call anyone back.
-
- That said, I take pride in my work, and will make every effort to
- clear up bugs.
-
-
-
- Setup
- ===============================================================
- ClipHound is a single executable application. There are no data
- files or ini files to set up. Simply put ClipHound in a
- convenient directory on your hard drive. We recommend you drag a
- shortcut to ClipHound into your StartUp folder so that it is
- always working for you. This has probably already been done by
- the install program.
-
-
- UnInstall
- ===============================================================
- To uninstall ClipHound, delete cliphound.exe and sparky.dat from
- your hard drive. ClipHound does not use the registry or any INI
- files. Also, remove any shortcuts you might have created on your
- own. We didn't provide an uninstall to save disk space. It's
- very simple to get rid of.
-
-
-
- Usage
- ===============================================================
-
-
- Background Operation
- -----------------------
-
- When ClipHound is running, it will monitor the Windows 95
- clipboard. Whenever you cut or copy some text, ClipHound will
- take a look at it and determine if it should take action.
- Usually, this means ClipHound will make a private copy of the
- text you put on the clipboard in its own list. However, if you
- have PasteBack enabled, ClipHound will check the text you placed
- in the clipboard against the names of items already in ClipHound.
- If a match is found, the full contents of the item matched is
- placed in the clipboard, overwriting the name. You can then
- paste this back into your application.
-
- ClipHound's database is saved on exit and reloaded on restart.
- There is no explicit save button, it simply happens
- automatically. ClipHound will also save its database to the hard
- drive every hour of operation to guard against power failure and
- system crash. So, if your hard drive rattles once an hour and
- you can't figure out why, it could well be ClipHound's automatic
- backup.
-
- ClipHound checks every minute to see if there are items in its
- database it should throw away. This is a very fast process, and
- you will note no delay from it.
-
-
- Active Operation
- -------------------
-
- When you are viewing ClipHound's main window, you're looking at a
- list of the items in the clip database. The list is comprised of
- three things per item: An icon indicating what sort of item it
- is, the name of the item, and a short excerpt from the first few
- lines of the item itself.
-
-
-
- ITEM TYPES
-
- There are four different item types, represented by four
- different icons.
-
- Plain Text. This appears as a document with lines on it. Plain
- Text items contain only text, and have no special function.
-
- Shortcuts. This appears as a shortcut arrow. A shortcut, when
- activated by double-clicking, will launch the shortcut,
- activating whatever application is associated with the document.
-
- Internet URLs. This appears as a short length of chain (links,
- get it?). A URL, when activated, will launch your web browser and
- fetch the file indicated.
-
- Binary. This appears as a block of 0s and 1s. Binary simply
- means that there are non-text characters in the item. Other than
- that, it behaves just like plain text.
-
- You cannot manually change an item's type. It is automatically
- determined by ClipHound. However, if you edit an item, depending
- on the form your edits take, it may change type. ClipHound
- senses the formats proper for filenames and URLs and assigns the
- appropriate type automatically.
-
-
-
- ITEM NAMES
-
- When an item is automatically captured by ClipHound, it receives
- the default name "Clip". If you do not change this, the item
- will be subject to the housekeeping system. To change the name
- of an item, either edit the item, or click on the name twice
- slowly, just like you rename a folder or file in Explorer.
-
-
- ITEM VALUES
-
- This is the actual content of the item. ClipHound can hold items
- of nearly arbitrary size. However, all items are held in swap
- memory when ClipHound is running, so the amount of virtual memory
- you have available is reduced by the size of your ClipHound list.
- Normally this won't be an issue, even if you have hundreds of
- multi-paragraph items.
-
-
- ACTIVATE BUTTON
-
- The first button on the screen at the lower left, this activates
- the currently selected item. Activate can do one of three
- things, depending on what type of item you're activating.
-
- Plain Text and Binary: Activating an item of this type simply
- copies the contents of the item to the clipboard. A message box
- pops up to tell you this.
-
- Shortcut: Activating this type of item causes the shortcut to be
- triggered, bringing up the associated application or file.
-
- Internet URL: Activating this item fires off your Web browser
- with the address given in the item text.
-
-
- COPY BUTTON
-
- Pressing this button causes the contents of the highlighted item
- to be put on the clipboard.
-
-
- EDIT... BUTTON
-
- When pressed, brings up a small editing window that lets you
- change the name of the current item as well as edit its contents.
- The edit window is a small but functional word processor, and can
- hold up to 32,000 bytes of information (more than you should ever
- need). ClipHound does not support text formatting.
-
- When your text cursor leaves the edit window, the type of your
- item will be re-evaluated, but probably not changed. The type is
- shown in a disabled box at the upper right of the window.
-
-
- DELETE BUTTON
-
- This deletes the highlighted items. There is no UNDO.
-
-
- ADD... BUTTON
-
- You can add a new item to ClipHound without ever using the
- clipboard by pressing Add... Simply enter a name and value for
- your item and it will be put on the list. The item type will be
- automatically determined from the content.
-
-
- PASTE BUTTON
-
- This creates a new item in the list based on the contents of the
- clipboard. This is useful if you start ClipHound up after putting
- something on the clipboard you wanted to save. Also, if you
- disable automatic capture, this and the Add... button are the
- only ways to get information into ClipHound.
-
-
- SETTINGS... BUTTON
-
- This activates a small dialog with ClipHound's configuration
- options. See SETTINGS DIALOG, a little later on, for more
- information.
-
-
- ABOUT... BUTTON
-
- This triggers an informational dialog which tells you all about
- ClipHound, including contact information for Albino Frog
- Software. From the About box, you can click REGISTER to learn
- about pricing for ClipHound. And, from the Register box, you can
- click ENTER CODE to type in your registration code to brand
- ClipHound to your name.
-
-
- RIGHT CLICK MENU
-
- If you point at an item name and right click, a context menu will
- appear.
-
- The first thing on this menu is the Activate option. Selecting
- it will Activate whatever item is curretly selected. See
- ACTIVATE BUTTON, above, for details about the different
- activation events.
-
- Selecting Delete will remove all selected items. There is no
- UNDO.
-
- Selecting Edit will bring up the edit window for the first
- selected item so you can change its name an/or value.
-
- Selecting Copy will put the first selected item's contents on the
- clipboard.
-
-
- KEYBOARD CONTROL
-
- When the item list has focus, you can press ENTER to activate an
- item or DELETE to delete them.
-
-
-
- Settings Dialog
- ------------------
-
- Disable Clipboard Capture: When checked, ClipHound will not
- monitor the clipboard for new clips. This is "manual" mode. To
- add items to ClipHound, you must either use the ADD... button, or
- press the PASTE button.
-
- Smallest Text to Capture: This controls the smallest piece of
- Plain Text ClipHound will capture automatically. Set this to
- help reduce the amount of meaningless edits Note: If the text on
- the clipboard is an Internet URL or shortcut, this setting is
- ignored.
-
- Largest Text to capture: Anything on the clipboard larger than
- this setting will not be captured. This is helpful to reduce the
- size of your ClipHound database, and can also reduce the number
- of uninteresting clips. (Large clips are usually the result of
- document reformatting and are pretty dull.)
-
- Discard "Clip" items after: This sets the lifetime of
- automatically captured items. If an item captured from the
- clipboard has not been renamed, it will be deleted if it exceeds
- this age, in hours. Our default is 24 hours, giving you time to
- review all clips at the end of the day. However, the list does
- tend to fill up. You might prefer a setting like .5 which is
- half an hour. But then you must remember to go to ClipHound and
- rename your items frequently.
-
- Disable named paste-back: This defaults off. If you disable it,
- ClipHound's coolest feature will cease to operate, but at least
- you won't have the worry that ClipHound will step on your
- clipboard data if you accidentally cut and paste an item name. I
- solve this problem by using nonsense item names like "i:sna" and
- "i:sun" so that they'll never intersect.
