SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAINS & BIG BEAR LAKE
CASL35.ZIP Version 2.0
Scenery covering the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern
California was originally developed for inclusion in Scott Miller's
Riverside, CA file. However, Scott had to delete a lot of the detail
to keep his entire file under the 60K limit. This version includes
all the detail originally furnished plus a few extras, and has the
"hidden" runways necessary to keep the base elevation altitude adjust-
ed for smoother flight.
CASL35KF.SC1 covers the area north of Ontario and Riverside from
the eastern end of the San Gabriels, including Mount San Antonio (AKA
Old Baldy), and all of the San Bernardinos. Cajon Pass and the I-15
Freeway divide the two mountain ranges. Detail for the San Gabriels
is limited as it runs into default mountains, but the San Bernardinos
are fairly complete. The San Bernardino Mountains surround two
valleys, the western one including Silverwood Lake and Lake Arrowhead,
and the eastern one holding Big Bear Lake.
If you fly into this area from the flatlands of the Los Angeles
Basin, ignore the wild fluctuations of your vertical speed indicator
(VSI). This is FS4's way of adjusting its base elevation. Do not fly
into this area with the autopilot engaged, as it will not react well
to the VSI's antics.
This file contains a large number of visual details and SEE
enhancements for the observant aviator, but only two airfields, Big
Bear City and the Squints Ranch private landing strip on Bacon Flats.
Operations from the larger lakes is possible, but remember you are at
over 5,000' MSL. The Cessna Floatplane is gutless on the water at
this altitude, so Laemming's Gypsy Floatplane is preferable, if you
have it.
