AAA maps of the Riverside/San Bernardino area
Introduction:
This file covers that portion of Southern California known
locally as the Inland Empire and includes the cities of San
Bernardino, Riverside, Corona, Redlands, Rialto, Chino, Ontario,
and Pomona (among others). The area covered by the file is
approximately 35 miles in diameter. At one time the area was covered
with vineyards and citrus fruit orchards. Now, sadly, the booming
California population has wiped out all of the vineyards and most
of the orchards. A number of orange and grapefruit orchards still
exist but probably not for long.
Eight airports are located within the boundaries of the file
including Riverside Municipal, Corona Municipal, Redlands Muni, Chino
Airport, Brackett Field (La Verne), Art Scholl Field (Rialto), Big Bear
City Airport, and Ontario International. I suspect that the name of
latter may be a case of wishful thinking as international flights still
have yet to begin flying out of Ontario (so far as I know). The file
can be used either with the FS dedault scenery or with SD-3. If you
have SD-3 and are a registered APTFIX user, the old runways at Brackett
Field, Ontario, Riato, Chino and Riverside should be removed to make
things look right.

THE SCENIC TOUR
Most airport buildings are depicted. Several several buildings
in beautiful downtown Riverside as well (County Admin Blg., City Hall,
the County Courthouse and the famous Mission Inn). California Baptist
College lies SSE of RAL. University of California, Riverside lies due
E of Mt. Rubdioux (opposite the 91 fwy).
Evans Lake is located NE of Mt. Rubidoux and Lake Mathews SE of
RAL. The Santa Ana River runs from Riverside to Redlands (basically,
it's a huge flood control ditch). Mt. Rubidoux (1339 ft.) lies about
3 miles north of RAL. Several streets in Riverside and Redlands are
depicted as are all the freeways in the area.
The University of Redlands is situated just south of Redlands
Municipal Airport. Redland's Smilely Public Library, built in 1898, is
located further SE of the university. A California Historical Landmark,
the library is also listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
Behind the library is the Lincoln Memorial Shrine. Contained within
is the single largest collection of Abraham Lincoln & Civil War books
and memorabilia this side of the Mississippi including a few strands of
the President's hair and a patch of cloth taken from the dress Mary
Lincoln wore to her husband's funeral.
Due north of Redlands (and visible from every airport in the
file) lie the San Bernardino Mountains. A breath-taking view, too...when
you can see them! The smog makes this a mental exercise much of the time,
particularly during the summer months. Several lakes exist in the mountains
including Silverwood Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear Lake and Baldwin Lake
(dry). Big Bear City Airport lies on the east end of Big Bear Lake.
DYNAMIC SCENERY
At all the tower controlled airports planes can be seen taking off,
landing, or (at POC) doing a touch `n go. Several 767s can be seen
at ONT. This is not strictly speaking, realistic, as the only jumbo
jets that currently fly out of ONT (to my knowledge) are UPS 747
cargo planes. For a cheap thrill try flying from RAL to ONT landing
on rwy 26R. Be sure to keep your head down <g>! The F14s on the
south side of ONT represent the small California Air National Guard
unit stationed there.
SEE ENHANCEMENTS
SEE04 was used at airports having intersecting runways to eliminate
the "laid over" look. All runways and polygons darken at night.
All streets and freeways darken at dusk and turn to lights at night.
All rivers darken at night as well. All tower controlled airports
now have tower and ATIS communications. Full night effects have been
added to nearly all buildings as well as to the San Bernardino Mountains.
Runway lighting has been added to all runways that have them in real life.
Ontario International has taxiway lighting as well. The size of the
file precluded adding taxiway lighting to any of the other airports. When
taxing at these airports you'll need to use to the map view to get around
properly.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I'd like to thank Ken Fugate, who contributed the San Bernardino
mountains, lakes, and airport, and Charlie Dunsensbury, who contributed
parts of ONT and extensively beta tested the file looking for errors (he
found several, too!) thereby keeping me far more honest than otherwise
might have been the case <g>! Their efforts have been vital in making
the file as realistic as possible.
Enjoy!
