[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL] The College is part of University of Oxford and students are [PARA]entitled to use its facilities.[EBOLD][PARA]Queen's is steeped in history and tradition. For example, under [PARA]ancient lore, a student can claim sanctuary from punishment by [PARA]the University by standing on the front steps of Queen's. Its[ITAL] [PARA]superb [EITAL]buildings[ITAL] dominate [EITAL]the High Street, 600 yards from [PARA]Carfax. The cupola and quad designed by Hawksmoor are [ITAL][PARA]impressive[EITAL]. [ITAL]Queen's isn't typical of Oxford colleges. There is a [PARA]larger northern contingent among the students than at most [PARA]colleges and the atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious. Most [PARA]have a bash at some sport or other and there's a thriving throng [PARA]of thespians. They don't often go beyond their own doorstep for [PARA]entertainment, with such mind-numbing fun as[EITAL] karaoke and the [PARA]Rugby Club's naked race around the back quad.[PARA][PARA]Bar (Queen's was the last college to brew its own beer); Queen's[PARA]Hall (cap 350), The Beer Cellar (150) and JCR (75) used for ents [PARA]as above and bands, cabaret and fortnightly groove in The Beer [PARA]Cellar; also slap-up dinners for clubs, afternoon tea. 'Queenie' [PARA]gossip rag; library (135,000 books); Anglican chapel. [ITAL]Participation[PARA]in sport stressed rather than success[EITAL]; 61/2 acres of playing [PARA]fields, 3/4 mile from College. Everyone lives in and eats in the [PARA]dining hall. Doctor, nurse.[HDNG]FAMOUS ALUMNI:[EHDNG][PARA]Rowan Atkinson (comedian); Jeremy Bentham (philosopher); [PARA]Edmund Halley (as in comet); Henry V; David Jenkins (Bishop of [PARA]Durham); Gerald Kaufman MP (Lab); Oliver Sacks (writer, [PARA]psychiatrist); Brian Walden (journalist, ex-MP).
