[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA]The Romans may have built the first settlement in Bath, but it [PARA]was in Georgian times that it became the [ITAL]truly beautiful[EITAL] city it [PARA]now is. [ITAL]Radiant [EITAL]golden local stone is everywhere - hardly a brick [PARA]building to be seen. Now it's one of the country's top tourist [PARA]resorts. They don't come just to see the Roman Baths and [ITAL]pretty[PARA][EITAL]city, but also the local countryside, the Mendip Hills, the [PARA]Cotswolds and the Severn Estuary. [ITAL]Unfortunately, [EITAL]the [PARA]University, being on a small 60s campus 2 miles from the city [PARA]centre, [ITAL]shares very little of this elegance. [EITAL]The buildings, [ITAL]which [PARA]epitomise some of the least attractive excesses of [EITAL]modern [PARA]concrete construction, [ITAL]are definitely not the University's best [PARA]feature, but students soon become anaesthetised to them.[EITAL] After [PARA]all, there is the [ITAL]pleasant [EITAL]greenery of the extensive grounds and [PARA]the small University lake. The expanse of the site, the golf [PARA]course next door, and its high, exposed and windy situation[ITAL] [PARA]makes it seem remote[EITAL]. The University offers mainly science and[PARA]technology courses (often with a language element) and many [PARA]include a sandwich placement in industry. There's no Arts [PARA]faculty [ITAL]but an active dramatic, musical and otherwise arty [PARA]element exists nevertheless[EITAL].[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Students are serious and bookish, but friendly; however their [PARA]warmth isn't enough to banish the deathly hush that sometimes [PARA]descends on the campus, which is a bit isolated. There's no Arts[PARA]Faculty (although extra curricular luvviness is very popular). [PARA]Students would object to the 'nerd' label and rightly so, but the [PARA]1993 Freshers' Week was given a Sci-Fi theme, including all the [PARA]Star Wars films, and free play on the arcade machines, so [PARA]they've only got themselves to blame. [EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]THE TOWN:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Population: 79,900 [BULL] London: 100miles [BULL] Bristol: 11miles[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA]Tourism not only means that Bath has plenty of amenities, [PARA]museums, galleries and entertainment facilities, [ITAL]but also that [PARA]these things cost a lot. The Roman Baths have to be visited at [PARA]some time.
