THE NEED FOR RECREATION
When our country was in its infancy, juvenile problems were
virtually non-existent. If this was indeed true, it must have been
because of the survival training young people had to go through -
hunting, fishing, farming and apprenticeship at least, in part,
provided a form of recreation. The insatiable desire of the young
to spend their boundless energy was more than satisfied. Today the
18 to 26 year old has the same amount of energy and not many
healthy places to spend it. The current rate of juvenile vandalism,
crime, alcoholism, drugs, etc. would seem to indicate a need for a
kind of recreation young people can relate to.
Disc golf is uniquely successful in providing this type of
recreation for young people. It gives them a method of expression
that is not intimidating to them, ie. Frisbee disc is not an
establishment sport. Frisbee disc is, however, the 8th most popular
activity among Americans. It is currently outdistancing softball,
tennis, racquetball, baseball, football and club golf to mention a
few. A recent survey conducted at the La Mirada Regional Park in
California compared the free use of a Disc Golf Course with the
free use of 12 lighted tennis courts. The results were pretty
remarkable. Usage on the Disc Golf Course was 246% greater than
that on the 12 lighted tennis courts combined, while the cost of
the Championship 18 Hole Disc Golf Course was only 4% of the
investment that the park had in the tennis courts.
People from all walks of life enjoy the fresh air, exercise and
challenge of the game. Elementary school children may be seen on
one hole, while the next hole has a foursome of scientists from the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Many families with young children play
together during early evening hours. La Canada High School's
Physical Education Disc Class (40 boys and girls) uses the course
once a week as part of their class activity. Disc golf seems to
have an appeal to all ages, however, the specific participation of
the hard-to-please young adult is particularly gratifying.
USE SURVEY AND OBSERVATION A recent survey conducted by the County
of Los Angeles at the Oak Grove Disc Golf Course, indicates the
following traffic patterns
7-12 year olds 16%
13-17 year olds 10%
18-26 year olds 60%
27-35 year olds 10%
36-44 year olds 3%
45 and up 1%
MAINTENANCE AND VANDALISM
Vandalism to hardware, and the potential increase in maintenance
cost, were the biggest concerns of Park departments in their
decision to install a Disc Golf Course. Subsequent to the
installation of the over 300 Disc Golf Courses in existence today,
concerns turned to astonishment. There has been little or no
vandalism to course hardware, (vandalism in the Parks is now
virtually nonexistent), and maintenance cost have gone down, not
up. This is quite remarkable since many of the Parks were
experiencing high instances of vandalism prior to the installation
of their Disc Golf Course.
GALLUP POLL
To determine the level of participation in leisure sports and
outdoor activities, Americans were asked to indicate which
activities they had participated in one or more times within the
last 12 months. The sports with the greatest appeal are swimming
37%, bicycling 27%, bowling 24%, fishing 24%, hiking 21%, camping
19%, basketball 18%, frisbee disc 17%, softball 16%, tennis 14%,
hunting 13%, golf 8%.
