^Exercise A: Fill-in-the-Blanks HELP screen^
Exercises ask you to complete a sentence by supplying the missing idiom.
In this exercise, the ten idioms are shown on the screen. You are asked to
type the idiom from the list which best completes the sentence.
The screen looks like this:
╔════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ E X E R C I S E - Lesson 1 Level 2 ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════╝
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Sandy and Fred ______________________________________ │
│ from the start, and they still go everywhere together. │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
FILL IN THE BLANKS: Choose an idiom from below
ACT UP BARGE IN
BLOW THE WHISTLE ON BURN THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS
GET ON ONE'S NERVES HIT IT OFF
JACK UP KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE
MAKE UP WASTE ONE'S BREATH
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ PRESS [F1] DISPLAY HINT [F2] CHANGE SCOPE Current Lesson ║
║ [F9] QUIT Exercise [F10] HELP ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
^[F1] DISPLAY HINT^ Press [F1] to show the hint.
^[F2] CHANGE SCOPE^ Press [F2] to switch the scope of the lessons the
exercise will cover, to: 1) current lesson (idioms are selected from the
current lesson of ten idioms), 2) previous lessons (idioms are randomly
selected from all previous lessons, including the current lesson), or 3) all
lessons. The word, ~Current~, ~Previous~ or ~All~, appearing after [F2] CHANGE
SCOPE, indicates the currently chosen scope.
^[F9] QUIT Exercise^ Hit this key to get out of the exercise screen and
return to the Main Menu.
^[F10] HELP^ To view this help screen.
In some cases you may also see ~[TAB] Switch~. The [Tab] key is used when the
idiom part of the sentence is broken into two parts, so that you can switch
from one part to another.
IdioMagic will let you know whether the answer you gave is ~CORRECT~ or
~INCORRECT~. If your answer is incorrect, it will ask if you want to try
again. To try again, type Y as your answer. In this exercise, IdioMagic
accepts two forms of the answer as correct. You can type the idiom exactly as
it appears on the list, or--if the grammar of the idiom as it is used in the
exercise is different--you can type it in the tense that fits the sentence.
Thus:
"I went to the bank, and on the way home I stopped to get gas. I killed
two birds with one stone."
On the exercise screen, this sentence will appear as follows:
I went to the bank, and on the way home I stopped to
get gas. I __________________________________.
You can type KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE or KILLED TWO BIRDS WITH ONE
STONE, and IdioMagic will happily accept either one. IdioMagic will also
accept some answers that are just a little bit off (grammar and typo's), in
which case it will flash a message asking you to ~CHECK FOR CORRECT
SPELLING/USAGE~.
