PLACENAME RESEARCH
by Bob Shandrew
Roy Fredrick and Arthur White wrote about "Placenames in the US" and the
US Board of Place Names. I tried it and it DOES work. Since the
process was so simple, I asked if they minded my advertising the service
for them. The response: "We really enjoy this part of our work".
The researchers are very helpful and access both written and electronic
data when checking. The process is simple - ask them for research on
the placename of interest. The researcher will take your number and
call you back shortly (half-hour in my case) local or long-distance.
Mail queries are also welcomed. The UPDATED address and telephone
number and address for all interested:
USGS Branch of Geographic Names
523 National Center
12201 Sunrise Valley Dr Reston VA 22092
Telephone (703) 648-4547. This number is directly to the researchers.
This office welcomes researchers in Room 2B116.
The Source of Magic BBS (below) also has several books of information
on place names in Connecticut and the United States. Leave a message
in Message Area 1 if you have a question about a name's origin.
