GENERAL
The TCN program is a Constitutional study aid for the independent
minded PC user.
The trial version features interactive search and indexing
capabilities. You get a very faithful rendition of the text of the
complete United States Constitution through the 27th amendment which
includes the Ratification Resolution as well as the Resolution
proposing the Bill of Rights.
Also included are the complete texts of the Magna Carta, the English
Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the French Bill of
Rights, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The text of
each of these documents is presented on a paragraph-by-paragraph
basis. Following most paragraphs are comments that compare or
contrast related sections of the United States Constitution or other
documents. The TCN program is the tool used to generate this
commentary. You can edit provided commentary at will.
When printed out, provided commentary is over 100 pages.
You can print out commentary or save in an ASCII file on disk for
embellishment using your word processor.
You can create new headings to comment on topics not addressed in the
commentary provided with the trial version.
The first time you start the TCN program, it introduces itself to you
and offers to run an on-screen get acquainted tutorial.
Within the TCN program, you can independently select type size and
style for display of help text, Constitution text, and comments.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Windows trial version 1.1 requires 2.5 meg if drive is doublespaced,
2.0 meg if drive is not doublespaced. Subtract 400 K if you already
have VBRUN300.DLL. It requires Windows version 3.1 or later. It
works fine on a system with 4 meg of RAM, has not been tried with
less.
INSTALLATION
From diskettes
If your trial copy of the TCN program was obtained from a shareware
disk vendor, use the "Run" option of the "File" menu in the Windows
Program Manager to run SETUP.EXE on disk number 1. You can use the
Browse option of "Run" to find SETUP.EXE or you can type drive and
path information on the Command Text line. Refer to SETUP.EXE or
TCNSETUP.EXE in a paragraph which follows for a description of what is
supposed to happen while the TCN program is installed.
From CD-ROM
If your trial copy of the TCN program is on a CD-ROM, follow the
manufacturer's instructions with the CD-ROM program launcher. Contact
your supplier or the manufacturer for technical support. Refer to
SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE in a paragraph which follows for a
description of what is supposed to happen while the TCN program is
installed.
From BBS download files
If the TCN program download file is 500 K in size (typical, could be
as low as 375K), it probably includes VBRUN300.DL_. If the TCN
program download file is 250K or less (typical, could be up to 325 K),
it probably does NOT include VBRUN300.DL_.
If your download file includes VBRUN300.DL_, run SETUP.EXE from the
"Run" option of the "File" menu of the Windows Program Manger.
If your download file does NOT include VBRUN300.DL_, make sure you
have a copy of VBRUN300.DLL in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory before
attempting installation. You can use the search feature of the
Windows File Manager (icon looks like a file cabinet). The search
feature is activated using the "Search" option of the "File" menu of
the Windows File Manager. Click "Search all subdirectories" box so
that an "X" appears in it. Type a \ (backslash) in the "Start search
from" box. Search all logical hard drives. If VBRUN300.DLL is
located somewhere other than in WINDOWS\SYSTEM, copy it to
WINDOWS\SYSTEM. If you do not find VBRUN300.DLL on your hard drive,
download it and decompress it in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.
After you know you have VBRUN300.DLL, unzip the TCN program download
file and run TCNSETUP.EXE from the "Run" option of the "File" menu of
the Windows Program Manger.
Refer to SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE in the following paragraph for a
description of what is supposed to happen while the TCN program is
installed.
SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE
NOTE: SETUP is used to refer to SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE.
The SETUP program checks your system and advises you if it does not
meet TCN program minimum requirements.
The SETUP program may or may not prompt you for source drive
information.
SETUP WILL prompt you for a target install directory. You can
specify any valid path on a drive with sufficient space to hold the
TCN program files.
After you enter the target path, the Windows screen will disappear
for a time while a SFX file runs. This is normal.
If a copy of the TCN program exists on the path you specify, you
will have to type "Y" or "y" up to 90 times to overwrite the existing
files.
When the Windows screen reappears, you are advised if the TCN
program installed successfully.
TCNbP Company provides limited technical support for installation
problems. Contact your shareware disk vendor, your CD-ROM supplier
(or the manufacturer), or your BBS Sysop for technical support or
warranty replacements.
STARTUP
SETUP creates a group in the Windows Program Manager (usually first
screen displayed when Windows starts) called the TCN Group. Inside
the TCN Group window is an icon that consists of an American Flag
waving proudly from atop a pole. To start the TCN program,
doubleclick the Flag icon.
Dwell a few moments on the first screen you see. You can access it
later using the "Dedication" option of the TCN program "Help" menu.
The first time, and only the first time, the TCN program is started
after installation, a series of 11 introductory screens tell you how
to start learning about the TCN program. You can access these screens
later using the "Notices" option of the TCN program "Help" menu.
Automatic display is NOT repeated.
Skim these notices lightly and make a written note of key sequences
provided.
SHARING THE TCN PROGRAM
The following paragraphs tell how to share the TCN program by
transferring the required files FROM various media TO floppy disks.
The following is a file list of the complete set of files required to
install the TCN program, including VBRUN300.DL_:
TCN EX_ 54,781 07-10-94 11:32a

SETUP LST 51 07-10-94 11:49a
TCN11WIN EXE 181,009 07-10-94 11:28a
From Diskettes
If your trial copy came from a shareware disk vendor, you can share
the TCN program by copying the original diskette(s). If your original
is on one 720K diskette, you can share it on 2 360K diskettes. Put
TCN11WIN.EXE and TCN.EX_ on disk 2 of 2 - all other files go on disk 1
of 2. If your original is on two 360K diskettes, you can copy all
files to a single diskette of 720K or greater capacity.
From CD-ROM
Refer to the list of files provided under the heading SHARING THE TCN
PROGRAM. Find these files on your CD-ROM disk. If you do not find
them on your CD-ROM disk, launch the TCN program from the CD-ROM and
look for these files somewhere on your hard drive. You can use the
search feature of the Windows File Manager as described in a previous
paragraph. After you find these files, you can transfer them to a
single diskette of 720K or greater capacity. You can transfer them to
two 360K diskettes -- put TCN11WIN.EXE and TCN.EX_ on disk 2 of 2 -
all other files go on disk 1 of 2. Use your preferred method of file
copying to transfer the files to floppy disks.
From BBS download files
Refer to the list of files provided under the heading SHARING THE TCN
PROGRAM. Look in the directory where you unzipped the TCN download
file. If all of these files are there, you can transfer them to a
single floppy of 720K or greater capacity. You can transfer them to 2
360K floppies -- put TCN11WIN.EXE and TCN.EX_ on disk 2 of 2 - all
other files go on disk 1 of 2. Use your preferred method of file
copying to transfer the files to floppy disks.
If only the files listed below are in your unzip directory, use the
procedure that follows the list to share the TCN program.
TCN EX_ 54,781 07-10-94 11:32a
TCNSETUP EXE 13,311 07-10-94 9:23a
README DOC 19,131 07-24-94 11:23a
TCN11WIN EXE 181,009 07-10-94 11:28a
1. Copy the files listed above to a floppy.
2. Copy VBRUN300.DLL from your WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory onto a
floppy. If you are using 360K floppies, you will have to compress it.
3. If VBRUN300.DLL is already on your friend's computer, you do not
have to copy it onto it again.
If your friend does NOT have VBRUN300.DLL in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
subdirectory, copy it there or unzip it to there from the copy you
made in step 2.
4. Put the floppy containing the files copied in step 1 in your
friend's floppy drive.
5. Run TCNSETUP.EXE from the "Run" option of the "File" menu in the
Windows Program Manager.
UPLOADING THE TCN PROGRAM TO A BBS
VBRUN300.DLL is required by the TCN program. It is a large file, some
277 K compressed. Therefore, some larger BBS operators prefer
(perhaps insist or require is a better word) that programs requiring
this file be uploaded without it. Such operators make VBRUN300.DLL
available as a separate file on their board. Before uploading the TCN
program to a BBS, find out (either search for VBRUN300.DLL in library,
E-Mail sysop, ask on-line technical help personnel, or consult a
windows upload guidelines file) if VBRUN300.DLL is available as a
separate file. If it is available as a separate file, use the first
procedure that follows. If it is not available as a separate file,
use the second procedure that follows.
Without VBRUN300.DLL

TCN11WIN EXE 181,009 07-10-94 11:28a
Copy the 4 files listed above into an empty scratch directory and
compress them in a format that is acceptable to the target BBS. If
you cannot find TCNSETUP.EXE on your hard drive (it should be in your
WINDOWS directory, or where you unzipped the TCN download file), run
the SETUP program again or try unzipping the download file again.
Prepare a description file as described under the heading BBS
DESCRIPTION FILE GUIDELINES.
Upload your zipped file and the description file to the BBS as you
normally would any other file.
With VBRUN300.DLL (With all 9 files)
NOTE: If you obtained the TCN program from a BBS which provides
VBRUN300.DLL separately, you will not find all 9 files referenced
below. Use the procedure under With VBRUN300.DLL (with only 4 files).
Refer to the list of 9 files under SHARING THE TCN PROGRAM. Copy all
these files into an empty directory and zip them in a format
acceptable to the target BBS.
Prepare a description file as described under the heading BBS
DESCRIPTION FILE GUIDELINES.
Upload your zipped file and the description file to the BBS as you
normally would any other file.
With VBRUN300.DLL (With only 4 files)
If you can only find the following 4 files on your hard drive, copy
VBRUN300.DLL from your WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory into the same
previously empty directory with them.

DESCRIPTION FILE GUIDELINES
Use materials in this file to prepare a suitable description file. The
following material is a useful guideline that will work for nearly all
BBS or On-Line services.
Use a very brief one-line description with your zipped file such as:
Constitution study aid. Download TCNDESC.DOC for full description.
For the file TCNDESC.DOC, use a very brief one-line description such
as:
Full description of the TCN program.
To write the file TCNDESC.DOC, use materials in this file.
For a list of suggested search key words, refer to that title above.
Use as many of those provided as the BBS will allow. Add some of your
own if any come to mind. If no place is provided for you to add
keywords on a BBS, bring them to the attention of the Sysop.
For the main body of the description, use the materials in the file
GENERAL.
For system requirements, paste in the paragraph entitled SYSTEM
REQUIREMENTS.
If the target BBS offers VBRUN300.DLL as a separate file, you might
include instructions about searching for it on a hard drive. Excerpt
appropriate procedures from this file and paste them into TCNDESC.DOC.
You might throw in a brief blurb about downloading from that
particular BBS.
You might say a little something about decompressing the download
file.
If appropriate, you can mention unzipping VBRUN300.DLL at this point.
VBRUN300.DLL must be available for SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE to run.
Depending on the contents of your upload file, you should specify
SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE as the file to run to install the TCN
program.
You should describe the TCN program icon and tell how to doubleclick
it to start the TCN program.
You can mention the file README.DOC (which will be this file) as a
source of further information available after download and unzipping.
You can compress the file TCNDESC.DOC or upload it as an ASCII file as
you see fit. TCNDESC.DOC is only a suggested file name - invent your
own if you like.
CLEANUP (erase setup files from hard drive to save space)
NOTE: Before erasing any related files from your hard drive, copy
them to a floppy in case you want to share the TCN program with
friends or upload it to a BBS.
From Diskettes
You can erase the file TCNSETUP.EXE in the WINDOWS directory.
From CD-ROM
You can erase the TCNSETUP.EXE file from the WINDOWS directory. Also,
search your hard drive for any of the 9 files listed under SHARING THE
TCN PROGRAM. If you find them, you can delete them.
From BBS download files
You can erase the file TCNSETUP.EXE in the WINDOWS directory. Also,
you can erase the compressed file (or files) that you downloaded from
the BBS. You can also delete the 9 files listed under SHARING THE TCN
PROGRAM.
REGISTRATION
You are obligated to register when you use the TCN program 20 times or
when you determine it is useful to you, whichever comes first.
Registration fees range from $10 to $35.
Benefits start off at $10 with a written perpetual license to use the
program. For additional fees ($20, $27.50 or $35.00 total), you
receive additional software and materials related to study of the
United States Constitution.
You can register using an on-screen interactive form or you can print
out a blank hard copy of a registration form and complete it manually.
