And I don't believe I ever lied to you. I don't think I've ever said anything that's been a lie. Never told you to vote for nobody. Never told you to follow nobody. Well, I'll tell you a story about that now. Well, Jesus saw this woman. They all wanted to stone her, because, you know, she was an adulteress. So they came by and they wanted to stone her. And they said to Jesus, they said 'Master' -- they wanted to trick him you know -- so they said 'What you say? What do you say? Should we stone this woman? Because she has been an adulteress?' And he said: 'Well, let him who is without sin cast the first stone'. Well, they all just dropped their stones and they walked away. And then he said to the woman, he said: 'Woman, you're free now, you go and sin no more'. And the woman left. Well, let me tell you that the Devil owns this world He is called "god" of this world. Now, we're living in America. I like America just as much as everybody else does. I love America, I gotta say that. But America will be judged you know. God comes against a country in three ways. First way he comes against them, he comes against them in their economy. Did you know that? He messes with their economy, first time. If you check all the way back to Babylon and Persia and Egypt -- many of you here are college students aren't you? (audience: Yeah!) Many of you are college students. Well, you ask your teachers about this now. You see, I know, they're going to verify what I say. Every time God comes against a nation, first of all he comes against their economy. If that doesn't work, He comes against their ecology. This is nothing new that's happening. He did it in Egypt. He did it with Persia. He did it with Babylon. He did it with the whole Middle East. It's a desert now. It used to be flourishing gardens. All right, if that don't work, He just brings up another nation against them. So one of those three things is got to work. Now Jesus is that solid rock. He's supposed to come two times. He came once already. Now He's coming back again. Now you've got to be prepared for this, because no matter what you read in the newspaper, that's all deceit. The real truth is that He's coming back already. And you just watch your newspapers! You're going to see, maybe two years, maybe three years, five years from now, you just watch and see. Russia will come down and attack in the Middle East. China's got an army of two hundred million people, they're going to come down to the Middle East. There's going to be a war called the battle of Armageddon. Which is like some war you've never even dreamed about. And Christ will set up His kingdom. He will set up His kingdom and He will rule it from Jerusalem. Now I know, as far out as that might seem, this is what the Bible says. (audience: Everybody must get stoned!) Now I'll tell you about getting stoned. All right. What do you want to know about getting stoned? What you're going to need is something strong to hang on to. You got drugs to hang on to now. You might have a job to hang on to now. You may have your college education to hang on to now. But you're going to need something very solid to hang on to when these days come. Let me tell you one more thing. When Jesus spoke his parables, he spoke them to people. He said parables to all of his people. Everybody could hear the parables. Some people understood them and some people didn't. But he said the same one. He said the same thing to everybody. You understand, he didn't try to hide them. Those that believed it, believed it and understood it, and those that didn't. didn't. That's right. We're gonna do the last song here called 'Hanging on to a Solid Rock made before the Foundation of the World'. Now, remember now, you talk to your teachers about what I said. Dylan speaks of having constant dialogue with Christ, of surrendering his life to God's will much in the same way as Joan of Arc or St Francis of Assisi would have done. It is, he says, the only thing that matters. When you ask about his band, he replies "I think Jim Keltner and Tim Drummond are the best rhythm section that God ever invented". His view on American politics is, "God will stay with America as long as America stays with God. A lot of people maybe even the President, maybe a lot of senators, you hear them speak and they'll speak of the attributes of God. But none of them are speaking about being a disciple of Christ". "There's a different between knowing who Christ is and being a disciple of Christ and recognizing Christ as a personality and being of God. I'm more aware of that than anything and it dictates my very being. So I wouldn't have much to offer anybody who wants to know about politics or history or or art or any of that. I've always been pretty extreme in all them areas anyway". Whether on or off the road Dylan worships whenever he can at the Assembly of God, a fundamentalist, pentecostal, evangelical l denomination that believe in the literal Bible and speaking in tongues. He came to Christ through a revelation, a personal experience with Jesus. "Jesus put his hand on me. It was a physical thing. I felt it. I felt it all over me. I felt my whole body tremble. The glory of the Lord knocked me down and picked me up". "Being born again is a hard thing. You ever seen a mother give birth to a child? Well it's painful. We don't like to lose those old attitudes and hang-ups". "Conversion takes time because you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. You have to learn to drink milk before you can eat meat. You're re-born, but like a baby. A baby doesn't know anything about this world ant that's what it's like when you're re-born. You're a stranger. You have to learn all over again. You can go see Kiss! You can Rock'n Roll all the way down to the Pit!! Well, anyway. Let me give you an example here. I dropped this cassette off with a friend of mine (audience interference). Turn the lights on here! I want to see these people! Turn some lights on! Put then in some light, put them in the light! So, anyway, this certain guru ... you want to hear about this guru? (audience: Yeah!). So, anyhow.. All right, so this guru, he made a film of himself. And he had one of these big conventions. He does have a convention, I think, ever so often. Like once a month he'll go to a big city. So I took a look at this tape. And sure enough he was having himself a good convention. He must have had five thousand or ten thousand people there. Ten thousand people! And what he was doing on the stage was he was sitting on there with a lot of flowers and things. And he sure did look pretty though! He sit up there, you know, like kind of up on a throne, you know. I was listening to him talk on the tape. And on the tape he said, you know, what life is all about is life is to have fun. (audience: Yeah!). Well, I'm going to show you now how you can all have fun. And he had a big fire extinguisher there, and he'd put colored water in this fire extinguisher. And he'd spray it out on the people. And they all laughed and just had a good time. And they took their clothes off and they were just overjoyed to be sprayed by this man. (audience: Booh!). And a little while after that he started talking about his philosophy, and he said that he was God. He did say that. He said, God's inside of him, and he is God, you know. that those people could just think of themselves as God. I want to tell you this, because there's many of these people walking around. They may not come right out and say they're God, but they're just waiting for the opportunity to... There is only one God. And let me gear you say that God IS. And God never makes promises that he doesn't keep. There is only two kind of people, like the preacher says, only two kinds of people - color doesn't separate them - neither does their clothes. I think I was too hasty and it's now time for me to take it all back. I did mention at the time that I hadn't heard much from the tour, so it seems that the Osaka 1986 concert was one of the duller ones around, whereas the Saratoga Springs concert is terrific. It probably helps somewhat that the tapes for Saratoga Springs sound excellent and the Osaka tape sounds mediocre at best. With all that said, this is a great concert! If this is typical of the Dylan/Petty tour (which I doubt), then I need to hear more. If this is not a typical concert from that year, then I'm glad I at least got the chance to hear the high points from this collaboration. One of my complaints about Dylan circa 1986 has been his singing, once so expressive but by then turned into a thin reedy whine, but this complaint must go out the window for this concert. He's in great voice here, singing some songs as if he really means it. From the very start Dylan gets great emotion out of "Unchain My Heart" and continues with a powerful "Positively 4th Street". "Shot of Love" is probably the highlight of the first set. Dylan and band get a nice funky groove going and the backup singers actually make sense here rather than just being annoying. Luckily, the Tom Petty sets are included here also. Petty kicks off his set with "Straight Into Darkness" and shows why Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are one of the best rock and roll groups going. A new song (at the time), "Think About Me", keeps the momentum going and then the brief set's highlight: "The Waiting". Unfortunately my tape cuts off before the song has a chance to finish. After an audience singalong on "Breakdown", which is weird because the audience can't be heard AT ALL, Dylan comes back on for his brief acoustic set. He sings "Tambourine Man", "Ramona", and "One Too Many Mornings", but none of these versions will ever make you forget the originals. That's right folks, I'm not a big fan of acoustic Zimmy post-1966. I will say, though, that these versions don't make me want to fast-forward the tape as many of his recent acoustic sets have. Dylan is rejoined by Petty and they sing together on "I Forgot More", an old country tune favored by his Zimness and released on Self Portrait. This is a very pleasant rendition. The rest of the Dylan/Petty set is excellent, but the best song has to be "When the Night Comes Falling". This is the arrangement that should have been recorded for Empire Burlesque. Very punchy! Another brief Petty set of great songs and great playing and then the final Dylan set where he brings it all back home once again. The most unusual song in the last set has to be "House of the Rising Sun" in an arrangement similar to The Animals! Apparently this was performed spontaneously, at least it doesn't seem very well rehearsed, but how much rehearsal is necessary for such a familiar song? Very nice version. But the best song of all is "Like a Rolling Stone". Absolutely fantastic version of this song which was usually butchered during the '86 tour. This version is slower, more deliberate, more in line with the classic 1966 live version. Unfortunately, the song is split over two sides of the tape and there is a big chunk missing! Nevertheless, what is intact is quite good. The sound is very clean mono, apparently taken right off of one of the monitors. The audience can't be heard at all, further convincing me that someone tapped a line from someone's monitor, and conversations between the musicians can be clearly heard at times because of the clarity of the recording. Minor flaw: not enought bass, but this is easily compensated by boosting the bottom end a bit. No problem.
