  67.           1991, the year of the Jubilee. Dylan turns fifty and has now thirty
  68.   years behind him as a recording artist. There is no new record this year,
  69.   but instead the amazing release of the first three volumes of THE BOOTLEG
  70.   SERIES. And. of course, more concerts. This marks the fourth year of the
  71.   Never-Ending tour and Dylan has now been touring every year since 1986.

  75.   1.  CALENDAR
  76.  
  77.   Early January Dylan records This Old man at his home studio for yet
  78.   (probably)    another benefit album: "For Our Children. Hope for
  79.                 children with AIDS".
  80.  
  81.   Early January Rehearsals with a new band starts in Montana Studios,
  82.                 New York City. The two remaining members are Tony Garnier
  83.                 on bass and Cesar Diaz on guitar. Ian Wallace has replaced
  84.                 Chris Parker on drums. Ian played 115 shows with Dylan
  85.                 during the 1978 World Tour. On guitar we also have one
  86.                 John Jackson who had been playing with Jo-El Sonnier earlier.

  88.   January 19    The promotional Wilbury Twist video is filmed at a mansion
  89.                 in Los Angeles.
  90.  
  91.   January       The original track of Series of Dreams is overdubbed at the
  92.                 Messina Sound Studios in New York. Dylan also provides new
  93.                 vocals for the second and 4rd bridge.
  94.  
  95.   January 28    Dylan kicks off the first tour of the new year with a
  96.                 most unusual version of Most Likely You Go Your Way.
  97.                 Everly line is sung at double speed and the rest of the time
  98.                 he plays harmonica. Must have been a real shock for the new
  99.                 and still unrehearsed band. The show features two "new" songs,
  100.                 Bob Dylan's Dream, not performed live since 1963 and, for the
  101.                 first time, God Knows from Under The Red Sky
  102.  
  103.   February 8-17 The European part of the second Fastbreak Tour ends with
  104.                 an eight show residency at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.
  105.                 The shows are generally much less varied than a year ago and
  106.                 the performances not nearly as inspired. The shows are heavily
  107.                 criticized by fans and in the press.
  108.  
  109.   February 20   Bob Dylan is given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the
  110.                 Grammy Awards Ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
  111.                 The award is presented by Jack Nicholson. After a short
  112.                 introductory speech by Nicholson a film of video clips is
  113.                 shown, featuring an unseen sequence from Eat The Document
  114.                 (Ballad Of A Thin Man) and a few sequences from the promotional
  115.                 video of the forthcoming single Series Of Dreams, an Oh Mercy
  116.                 outtake. Dylan and the band then enter the stage and perform a
  117.                 really rough version of Masters Of Wars sung with closed eyes
  118.                 in his most toneless voice. After this performance Dylan is
  119.                 given the award and delivers this short acceptance speech:
  120.  
  121.                 "Thank You ... well ... alright ... yeah, well, my daddy he
  122.                  didn't leave me too much ... you know he was a very simple
  123.                  man and he didn't leave me a lot but what he told me was
  124.                  this ... what he did say was ... son ...  he said uh ....
  125.                  (long pause) ... he said so many things ya know ..... he said
  126.                  you know it's possible to become so defiled in this world that
  127.                  your own mother and father will abandon you, and if that
  128.                  happen God will always believe in your own ability to mend
  129.                  your ways.  Thank you."

  131.                 After which Dylan leaves the stage to a standing ovation.
  132.  
  133.                 At Sony's after-the-show party Dylan turned up with his date
  134.                 for the evening: his mother!
  135.  
  136.   Late February Bob Dylan is interviewed in Los Angeles by his publisher
  137.                 Elliot Mintz about the Bootleg Series. The interview is
  138.                 included in the syndicated Westwood One radio show, broadcast
  139.                 in the US during May.

  141.   Feb 25 27     The first of the 1991 tours ends with four shows in Mexico,
  142.   March 1, 2    two in Guadalajara and two in Mexico City. This is Dylan's
  143.                 first concerts in Mexico.
  144.  
  145.                 At the concerts in Mexico City he played to a one-third full
  146.                 Sports palace, but outside 30,000 people gathered and listened
  147.                 to the concerts through special speakers located outside the
  148.                 hall.
  149.  
  150.                 In a telephone interview in the Guadalajara Reporter, No 8,
  151.                 1991 (Feb 23-Mar 1) Dylan gets the question "What's the band
  152.                 you're touring with like?" and answers "Real good, real simple.
  153.                 Tony (Garnier from Asleep At The Wheel) plays stand-up bass.
  154.                 We may use John Staheley (Robert Palmer band) on guitar".
  155.                 Was Staheley to replace John Jackson or Cesar Diaz?

  157.   March 16      On St Patrick's Day BBC broadcasts the Van Morrison program
  158.                 One Irish Rover in which the Dylan-Morrison duets from
  159.                 Athens in June 1989 are included.
  160.  
  161.   March 26      Release of single 'Series Of Dreams/Seven Curses'
  162.                 Release of the 3CD (in Europe also 5LP) set THE BOOTLEG SERIES.

  164.   March 28      Dylan is interviewed by Joe Queenan. The interview is
  165.                 originally intended as a birthday article in New York Times.
  166.                 The interview apparently did not go well and in the end
  167.                 New York Times rejected it and it turned up in the August
  168.                 issue of SPY magazine titled "The Free-fallin' Bob Dylan.
  169.                 Exclusive polysyllabic Dylan interview". Dylan does not reveal
  170.                 anything and the frustrated interviewer starts the article
  171.                 with the following insult: "Forever young? Sorry, no. Bob
  172.                 Dylan - suddenly 50 years old - has declined into a loopy,
  173.                 very occasionally inspired parody of his once-great self".
  174.  
  175.   April         Dylan is intervied by Paul Zollo in a Beverly Hills Hotel for
  176.                 SongTalk magazine (published by the National Academy of
  177.                 Songwriters, which Dylan joined a year earlier). The interview
  178.                 is one of the best from recent years and is later published
  179.                 in the Winter 1991 issue.

  181.   April 19      This year's second tour starts in New Orleans. Cesar Diaz
  182.                 has now left the band, The first show starts with a live
  183.                 premiere, New Morning. This is to be the opening song for
  184.                 almost all shows during the spring and summer tours.
  185.  
  186.   Early May     The planned nine show tour of South America is cancelled when
  187.                 the local promoters fail to come up with the required advances
  188.                 on time. The following shows were scheduled:

  190.                    May 22-25       Buenos Aires, Argentina
  191.                        27          Montevideo, Uruguay
  192.                    May 30, June 1  Sao Paolo, Brazil
  193.                    June 2          Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  195.   May 12        The spring tour ends after 15 shows in Amherst, Mass. This is
  196.                 the first time in Amherst since he played The Cage on
  197.                 April 26 1964.

  199.   May 14-15     Two shows at Port Chester are cancelled.
  200.  
  201.   May 24        Dylan turns 50.
  202.  
  203.   May 28        Release of For Our Children charity album.
  204.  
  205.   June 6        For the third summer in a row Dylan tours Europe. The first
  206.                 show in Rome opens appropriately with When I Paint My
  207.                 Masterpiece, the first rendition of this song during the
  208.                 Never-Ending tour. The show also features two never before
  209.                 played covers, an acoustic version of Paul Simon's Homeward
  210.                 Bound and John Prine's People Putting People Down.

  212.   June 8        In Italy Van Morrison shares the bill with Dylan and in Milan
  213.                 Dylan makes a guest appearance at Van's opening concert, playing
  214.                 harmonica in Whenever God Shines His Light and Enlightenment.
  215.  
  216.   June 28, 29   The European summer tour ends with two rock festival shows,
  217.                 in Norway and Denmark. Then back to the States for the
  218.  
  219.   July 4 - 27   US Summer tour which starts in Tanglewood, Lenox, Massachusetts
  220.                 and ends in Corfu, New York. One more East Coast tour.

  222.   Early August  Dylan attends a Les Paul concert at Fat Tuesday's in New York.
  223.                 Les Paul is celebrating his 76th birthday.
  224.  
  225.   August 8 - 21 At last, South America! Dylan has wanted to tour this part of
  226.                 the world since 1984 at least. 9 shows in Argentina, Uruguay
  227.                 and Brazil. Audiences vary from 30,000 to 1,500! Some unusual
  228.                 songs are played like Ring Them Bells and It's Too Late.
  229.  
  230.   Early         Dylan and the band is rehearsing in Los Angeles. There are
  231.   September     lots of rumors of the band breaking up, Ian Wallace leaving
  232.                 the band, talks of Dylan again touring with The Band. In the
  233.                 end the band stays the same. Dylan tries again to book Beacon
  234.                 Theatre in New York in October but he is too late.
  235.  
  236.   September 15  Once again Dylan appears at the Chabad Telethon. He spoke
  237.                 to the audience, asking people to contribute and then thanked
  238.                 the rabbis present. Later he and Kinky Friedman performed
  239.                 "Sold American", Kinky singing and playing acoustic guitar and
  240.                 Dylan playing electric guitar.
  241.  
  242.   October 17    Dylan attends the Guitar Greats Festival (Leyendas de la
  243.                 Guitarra) in Seville, Spain. This is a five night extravaganza
  244.                 with each night devoted to a certain decade and having a musical
  245.                 director. The performances are organized in a relay fashion.
  246.                 Dylan performs his first song with Jack Bruce and his band, then
  247.                 three acoustic songs with Richard Thompson on guitar, then
  248.                 introduces Keith Richards and they play Shake Rattle & Roll
  249.                 together. The musical director this night is Phil Manzanera.
  250.                 There are at least one hour from each night broadcast on TV
  251.                 and radio in various countries all over Europe.
  252.  
  253.   October 24    Last tour this year starts with four shows in Texas and ends
  254.                 in late November in Charlottesville, Virginia.
  255.  
  256.   November 20   Thirty years ago today Dylan began to record is first album
  257.                 in Columbia Studio A in New York with John Hammond as producer.
  258.                 Now he:
  259.                  - has sold more 30 million albums worldwide
  260.                  - has received 21 certified gold albums
  261.                  - has had over 2000 cover versions of his songs recorded
  262.                  - is a member of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
  263.                  - has received the Ascap Founder's Award
  264.                  - has received the NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award
  265.                  - has been awarded "les insignes de commandeur des Arts et des
  266.                    Lettres by the French.

  364.   3. THE BOOTLEG SERIES
  365.  
  366.      First it was to be a 10 CD-set, one disc released each month in 1991
  367.      starting in March. Then it became a 4CD box. Finally Sony decided to
  368.      trim it down to a 3CD box. Still, this is one of the more stunning
  369.      retrospective releases that has ever hit the market:
  370.  
  371.       58 songs total, NONE released before!
  372.       23 songs new to collectors! (marked + or * below)
  373.        8 songs never before heard with Dylan! (marked * below)
  374.  
  375.      Excellent booklet with stunning photos and great liner notes written by
  376.      John Bauldie.
  377.  
  378.      One might say that this release marks the recognition of the importance
  379.      and resources of the widespread Dylan "fan community". Not only the
  380.      name of the set, but also the facts that several well known collectors were
  381.      consulted during the preparations and that the editor of The Telegraph,
  382.      and chairman of the Bob Dylan Information Office, Wanted Man was
  383.      commissioned to write the booklet's liner notes. Without the collectors,
  384.      performances like Hard Times In New York Town and No More Auction Block
  385.      might be very well lost long ago.

  490.      One remarkable thing is that there is not one single song that was
  491.      unknown before the release of the box. Of the songs never before heard

  493.      - House Carpenter is mentioned by Shelton in his book No Direction Home,
  494.      - Farewell Angelina is probably the biggest surprise of all, even though
  495.                          Stephen Pickering has claimed to possess this outtake,
  496.                          it is of course well-known through Joan Baez,
  497.      - Santa Fe. Call Letter Blues, Ye Shall Be Changed and You Changed My Life
  498.        have all been known to exist and copyrighted lyrics have been in
  499.        circulation,
  500.      - Golden Loom and Catfish have been recorded by other artists and the
  501.        lyrics are included in Lyrics 1962-1985 and
  502.      - Series Of Dreams is mentioned as one of six Oh Mercy outtakes by
  503.        Daniel Lanois in an interview in The Telegraph.

  855.   Dylan came to Europe with a new lead guitarist and a new drummer. This
  856.   band sounded extremely under-rehearsed in the beginning and the new
  857.   members had real problems filling the places of G.E. Smith and Chris
  858.   Parker. Cesar Diaz did an important job in the background. Without him
  859.   this first tour would have been absolutely horrid.

  1343.   Back in Europe after just three weeks break, things are getting better.
  1344.   The band is starting to sound a little tighter and once again the
  1345.   set-lists get a little more varied. An occasional cover and some unusual
  1346.   songs. Dylan continues to play the electric piano now and then, but in
  1347.   Stuttgart something happens. After a completely horrid New Morning with
  1348.   random piano attacks, totally unconnected with the song being played,
  1349.   Dylan abolishes the piano for the rest of 1991. Then, in the same show,
  1350.   he changes the show format somewhat. There are two extra songs in the first
  1351.   electric set, only four in the second. I Shall Be Released & Like A Rolling
  1352.   are dropped from the set from now on (with a few exceptions in South America).
  1353.   This is the first show since Cuyahoga Falls June 21, 1988 without Like A
  1354.   Rolling Stone. From now on Ballad Of A Thin Man becomes the standard
  1355.   last encore.
