INTRODUCTION
A new year, a new album, a new tour. For once Bob Dylan did things in
the expected order. First he recorded a new album, then he hit the road
to promote it. Only, CBS didn't grasp this new of approach of his and forgot
to release it till after the summer tour in Europe, much to Dylan's
disappointment and irritation. The new album, SHOT OF LOVE, was (is?)
probably one of his favorites of all time. 1981 also saw the return of some
secular Bob Dylan love songs as well as a few last gospel songs. It was the
fourth year in a row that he was touring, but it was to be the last for two
years and the last for five in the States.
1. CALENDAR
April 7 Caribbean Wind is recorded at Muscle Shoals.
April-May The Shot Of Love sessions takes place at the
Clover Recorders studios in Los Angeles, The titletrack is
recorded in May in the Peacock Records Studios in LA.
June 10 The Shot Of Love tour starts with a show at the Hoffman
Estates in Chicago and is followed by three more "warm-up"
shows in US before the European tour starts in France,
June 12 A series of transatlantic telephone interviews are organized
to promote the return to Europe:
- with Tim Blackmore at the Capitol radio in London,
broadcast June 15
- with Yves Bigot ar Radio Europe 1, Paris, broadcast in
parts June 22 and June 23
- with Paul Gambaccini at Radio One, BBC, broadcast in the
'Rock On' program, June 20
July 2 Dave Herman interviews Dylan at the White House Hotel
in London. The interview is broadcast by WNEW-FM Radio in
New York on July 27.
July 13 After having seen a fake interview in a Danish paper,
Dylan calls a press conference at the maritime Hotel in
Travemunde. The press conference starts at 11pm and goes
on for two hours.
July 20 Dylan is interviewed by Neil Spencer. The interview is
published New Musical Express August 15.
July 25 The third European tour ends with a tragic show in Avignon,
France. First a member of the crowd gets killed while
somehow falling into the electric cables, causing total
blackout, and in the resulting confusion a girl falls off
a wall and gets killed too. Dylan and the band improvise
acoustic rhythms on stage until power is restored.
August 12 Release of SHOT OF LOVE.
September 1 'Heart Of Mine/Let It Be Me' single is released
(in Europe only)
September 11 'Heart Of Mine/The Groom's Still Waiting At The altar'
single is released (in Europe only)
September The Dave Herman interview from July 2 is released on the
promotional album DYLAN LONDON INTERVIEW JULY 1981.
October 16-17 The American part of the Shot Of Love tour starts with
two shows at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
October 19,21 Dylan's wheelchair-bound friend Larry Kegan sings the
Chuck Berry's 'No Money Down' as the last encore while
Dylan plays tenorsaxophone (!).
November 21 Last Shot Of Love show in Lakeland, Florida. One of the
longest Dylan shows ever, 28 songs including six encores.
This show features the first live rendition of Every Grain
Of Sand, making it the seventh song from the album to be
performed during the tour.

The Shot Of Love Tour consisted of two parts:
1. The European Summer tour in June and July
2. The fall tour in North America in October-November
These parts will be referred to as leg 1 and 2 below.

3.3 The Show

The concerts during the Summer tour were basically structured like the
"Musical Retrospective" shows in November 1980.
The Fall tour shows started with 12 songs by Dylan and the band, followed
by one song sung by the backing girls. Then about 10 more songs by
Dylan and the band and for encores Blowin' In The Wind with Dylan on piano,
one or two songs solo and then one or two song with the band.

One new gospel song, written in Oslo during the tour, Jesus Is The One,
is performed eight times with different lyrics each time.
City Of Gold and Covenant Women are both played for the last time.
