Using GPort
LinkUp utilizes GPort, a KWindows based program which
allows you to set serial port options with extreme ease by
pointing and clicking with your mouse. GPort can be called from
within LinkUp in two ways:
o Selecting the Port Setup option from the Modem menu
(or typing [ALT]-S)
o When inserting or changing an entry in the Phone Book,
and clicking on the 'Port' button.
When invoked from either method, GPort appears.
If invoked by the first method, GPort's title bar
holds the name of the serial port whose parameters are
being changed, and changes go into effect
immediately. If invoked by the second method, GPort's
title bar holds the name of the Phone Book entry being
modified, and port changes are only recorded for that
entry.
GPort Basics
The GPort application window has seven principle
areas:
o Data Bits
o Stop Bits
o Baud
o Flow Control
o Parity
o Misc
o OK/CANCEL
In addition, there is the close box at the upper
left hand corner of the application window, and the
Port menu which allows you to view GPort's "About"
box.
Each area allows the selection of one or more
options by clicking on the small square bullet box to
the left of the item. When the bullet box is raised,
that option is off, or non-selected. When the bullet
box is lowered and colored with a smaller white box,
that option is on, or selected.
Data Bits
The Data Bits area allows you to change the
number of bits per byte on the serial port. Options
are 5, 6, 7 and 8 data bits. Clicking on the bullet

box of your choice will turn on that option. Only one
option at a time can be on in this area.
Baud
The Baud lets you modify the baud rate, or bits
per second (BPS) for the serial port. Options are
300, 1200, 1800, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400,
Extern and Unknown. Clicking on the bullet box of your
choice will turn on that option. Only one option at a
time can be on in this area.
Flow Control
The Flow Control area allows you to control the
type of data flow control for your serial port.
Options are Xon/Xoff, Hardware or None. Clicking on
the bullet box of your choice will turn on that
option. Both Xon/Xoff and Hardware options can be on
at the same time. Selecting None turns off those
options.
Parity
The Parity area allows you to change the parity,
or error checking for your serial port. Options are
None, Odd and Even. Clicking on the bullet box of your
choice will turn on that option. Only one option at a
time can be on in this area.
Misc
The Misc area allows you to control the handling
of linefeeds, page pause and EOF detection for your
serial port. Clicking on the bullet box of your
choice will turn on that option, and each option can
be turned on or off independently of the other.
You should always turn off EOF detection, since
LinkUp's emulation mode will not work with this option
on. Linefeeds may or may not affect LinkUp's
operation. Page pause should also be turned off.
OK/CANCEL
After you have made the changes you wish for your
serial port or Phone Book Entry, you may select OK to
accept the changes, or CANCEL to abort the changes.
You may also exit GPort by selecting the close
icon at the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Exiting this way will cancel all changes you have
made, and you will be asked if you wish to do so.
Click on the Yes button to cancel and exit (or press
the Y key); otherwise, click outside of the button to
remain in GPort.
