  1. Generations - Problems

  3. The following are the most common problems I have noticed in my mail messages.

  5. INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
  6. =====================

  8. Problem:
  9.   How do I install Generations?
  10. Solution:
  11.   Double-click on geno.exe.
  12.   Generations does not need any installation software.
  13.  
  14. Problem:
  15.   I try to open geno.zip with Word or Excel and can't get anything to work.
  16. Solution:
  17.   Generations is a self-contained program; that is, you can view, edit and
  18.   print your genealogy tree without the need of any other program.
  19.   When you download geno.zip you get Generations in a compressed format.
  20.   You need a special program to decompress (extract) geno.exe from geno.zip.
  21.   You may use use WinZip to extract geno.exe from geno.zip.  If you do not
  22.   have WinZip, you can download WinZip from www.winzip.com.

  24. Problem:
  25.   I get a message about a missing MFC42.DLL.
  26. Solution:
  27.   Your system is missing a system library.
  28.   The file mfc42.dll is installed on all Windows 98, Windows NT and most
  29.   of the Windows 95 machines.  To resolve this problem, simply download file
  30.   mfcdll.zip (588 KB) from my web site.
  31.   The file mfcdll.zip contains two files, mfc42.dll (940 KB) and
  32.   msvcrt.dll (270 KB), to which you should copy/extract into the same
  33.   directory (folder) as geno.exe.

  35. Problem:
  36.   I get a message about missing export in MFC42.DLL (missing MFC42.DLL:6453)
  37. Solution:
  38.   Your system has an old version of MFC42.DLL.
  39.   If you are using Windows 98 or Windows NT, you should never get this message.
  40.   If you are using Windows 95, simply download mfcdll.zip from my web site and
  41.   copy/extract the two files, mfc42.dll and msvcrt.dll, into the same directory
  42.   as geno.exe.  You must download the latest mfc42.dll; copying the file from
  43.   your windows\system directory into geno.exe's directory will not resolve the
  44.   problem.

  46. Problem:
  47.   I'm having problems viewing the online help.
  48. Solution:
  49.   Generations uses HTML help because HTML is portable and easy to navigate.
  50.   If you are having problems navigating or can't view the graphics, this
  51.   may be because the files have been extracted without their long filenames.
  52.   You should use WinZip to decompress geno.zip, because WinZip will preserve
  53.   the long filenames.
  54.   If you have a version of pkunzip supporting long file names, type the
  55.   following command to extract the files.
  56.       c:\generations>pkunzip -d geno.zip

  58. Problem:
  59.   I can't view the sample .gno files using the help.
  60. Solution:
  61. 1. You must have installed and launched Generations on your machine at
  62.    least once.  That is, you can't view a .gno file from a browser if you
  63.    never launched Generations.  The first time you run Generations,
  64.    Generations will automatically register itself to the system.
  65. 2. You must use a web browser capable to host an ActiveX control.
  66.    The only browser I know is Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  69. Problem:
  70.   The Back button of the browser does not work after viewing a .gno file.
  71. Solution:
  72.   You get this problem if you are using an early version of Internet
  73.   Explorer 4.0.  Internet Explorer v3.x does not have this problem,
  74.   and Internet Explorer v4.72.3110.8 (and later) does not have this
  75.   problem either.  Download the latest version of Internet Explorer
  76.   from Microsoft's web site (http://www.microsoft.com/ie/).
