1. South American snake Eunectes murinus a
member of the python and boa family, the
Boidae. One of the largest snakes, growing
to 9 m/30 ft or more, it is found in and near
water, where it lies in wait for the birds
and animals on which it feeds. The anaconda
is not venomous, but kills its prey by
coiling round it and squeezing until the
creature suffocates.
2. Town in Montana, USA, which had the
world's largest copper smelter (closed 1980);
population (1980) 12,518. The city was
founded as Copperopolis 1883 by the Anaconda
Copper Mining Company, and was incorporated
as Anaconda 1888. The town is 1,615 m/5,300
ft above sea level and 42 km/26 mi NW of
Butte.
