One of a number of different forms of the
same chemical element, for example the two
forms of oxygen: `normal' oxygen (O2) and
ozone (O3), which have different molecular
configurations. More commonly, allotropes of
an element have different crystal structures
when solid, such as the white and grey forms
of tin. The allotropes of carbon are diamond
and graphite.
