  1. In Greek mythology, a beautiful youth beloved
  2. by the goddess Aphrodite. He was killed while
  3. boar-hunting but was allowed to return from
  4. the lower world for six months every year to
  5. rejoin her. The anemone sprang from his
  6. blood. Worshipped as a god of vegetation, he
  7. was known as Tammuz in Babylonia, Assyria,
  8. and Phoenicia (where it was his sister,
  9. Ishtar, who brought him from the lower
  10. world). He seems also to have been
  11. identified with Osiris, the Egyptian god of
  12. the underworld.
