How to use the program ═══ This section describes how to use the program. ═══ 2.1. Start ═══ It's necessary to change the OS2COM.INI to your needs! How to use the OS2COM.INI is described in this manual and in the original OS2COM.INI delivered with the program. Every line is commented and should give you all the help you need to understand what it does. However, there's a section with a detailed explanation in this manual. The OS/2-Commander should be started with the OS2C.CMD. This is the only way to change to the current drive and directory when leaving the program. If you don't need it (e.g. if running in a window) of course you can run it by starting the OS2COM.EXE directly. ═══ 2.2. The keys ═══ CURSOR-Up/Down (or mouse) moves through the files. CURSOR-Left/Right moves the cursor in the command line. If the command line is empty, you can use CURSOR_Left/Right to change a directory up/down. Use CTRL-CURSOR_Left/Right in a Brief-List. CTRL-END moves the cursor to the end of the command line. CTRL-HOME moves the cursor to the beginning of the command line. ENTER or mouse double-klick changes into the directory the cursor is actual on, starts a program, changes inside an archive or starts a program linked to the extension. See OS2COM.INI for more information. If the comand line is not empty, ENTER executes the command, ESC erases the command line. ALT-ENTER also starts programs, but Commander will launch a new task for it. INSERT or right mouse button tags an entry. SPACE tags an entry, if the command line is empty. F1 open the Help window F2 User menu. See OS2COM.MNU for more information. F3 Viewer (internal or external). See OS2COM.INI for more information. F4 Editor (internal or external). See OS2COM.INI for more information. F5 copy a file, a number of selected files or a directory tree. SHIFT-F5 to copy additional to the file also the entry in the FILES.BBS. F6 rename or move a file, a number of selected files or a directory tree. SHIFT-F6 to move additional to the file also the entry in the FILES.BBS. F7 creates a new directory F8 kill a file, a number of selected files or a directory tree. ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ The OS/2-Commander is able to copy, move or delete a complete │ │ directory tree! │ │ F5, F6 or F8, with the cursor on a directory will copy, move │ │ or delete a directory completely with all subdirectories! │ │ So please be careful, especially when using F8 (delete)! │ └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ SHIFT-F8 kills additional to the file also the entry in the FILES.BBS. ALT-F5 change to the root directory. ALT-F6 show directory macros (currently stored pathes). ALT-F7 starts the Find-function. You can enter the filename to search for. If you append the parameter /a to the filename OS/2-Commander will search for the files on all drives. Than you can enter a text to search for in these files. You get a list of all files that matches your search criterion and have now the possibility to change to a drive and directory of a found file. You can also view the files in this list, tag the files and copy, move or delete all or some of the found files. You can tag files with INS or SPACE. If the scrollbar in on a directory, the selection for all files in it will be inverted. With "+" you can select all files, "-" will deselect all files, "*" will invert the selection of all files. ALT-F8 history window of the last 20 commands. RETURN or left mouse button executes the command, CTRL-RETURN puts the command to the command line. ALT-F9 Video-mode If you've trouble with 30 or 34 lines since OS/2 2.1 March-beta try ALT-F9 to solve it. ALT-F10 Directory-Tree ALT- moves the cursor to the next entry starting with this letter. See OS2COM.INI for more information. ALT-[0-9] change to directory stored under that number SHIFT-ALT-[0-9] store current path under that number CTRL-F1 to CTRL-F5 sorts the active window by name, extension, date, size or unsorted. CTRL-F6 to switch to a number of video modes. CTRL-F9 Diskcopy CTRL-\ (CTRL-# on german keyboards) to switch to the root-directory CTRL-A shows the listing of self-extracting archives. There is a version of UNARJ.EXE 2.41 available that is modified by Kerry Flint. This version supports extraction of single files. The normal demo version by Robert Jung doesn't! If you have this version, the OS/2 version is used for a lot of things we had to use the DOS version before. [AddArcer] This section describes how to define additional arcer. EXT: UC2 The extension of the archive files. NAME: C:\TOOLS\ARC\UC.EXE The arcer to call. LIST: VS Parameter for a listing of the archive file. ADD: A -TST Parameter to add files. EXTRACT: EF Parameter to extract files. DELETE: D Parameter to delete files. BEGLIST: -->@1 After this string in the list the files are following. The character "@" defines the end of the string respectively the beginning of the position. @1 = the string is found at position (column) 1 in the line, @0 = the string is somewhere in the line. FNAME: 1,12 The position (column) where to find the filename. Here from column 1 to column 12. FSIZE: 15,25 The position (column) where to find the filesize. Here from column 15 to column 25. FDATE: 28,38 The position (column) where to find the filedate. Here from column 28 to column 38. FTIME: 41,45 The position (column) where to find the filetime. Here from column 41 to column 45. ENDLIST: matching file@0 After this string in the list the list of files ends. @5 = the string is found at position (column) 5 in the line, @0 = the string is somewhere in the line. ═══ 2.4. The OS2COM.MNU ═══ The OS2COM.MNU contains the User-mene that is activated with F2. It is possible to use more than one menu. OS/2-Commander will look in the current directory for the OS2COM.MNU, and then, if none was found, in the directory that contains the OS2COM.EXE. Structure of the OS2COM.MNU: F1 : Squish Squash f: cd\max\squish sq386p squash F1: defines the key that is used to start this menu entry, the following text is shown as Menu-text in the menu. All other lines are normal commands like in normal batch files. F2 : Maximus Filebase Compiler f: cd \max fbp F: Format Drive A format a: F9 : View Fax cdd d:\zfax zfaxg vf [%P]\[%F] You can use 3 different macros in the commands. [%F] will insert the currently highlighted file name into the command line, [%P] the current path name, [%D] the current drive. ═══ 2.5. The OS2COM.MSG ═══ The OS2COM.MSG has to be in the same directory as the OS2COM.EXE. It contains a couple of messages that OS/2-Commander will show at specific actions or errors. It is an ENGLISH.MSG available that contains the english messages and a DEUTSCH.MSG that contains the German messages. If you prefer the German language rename the DEUTSCH.MSG to OS2COM.MSG. Please do not edit the *.MSG- files! ═══ 2.6. The Screen-Saver ═══ The screen saver is automaticaly activated after the number of minutes without pressing a key defined on the OS2COM.INI. If defined as 0, the screen saver is not activated. You can activate the screen saver immediately if you move the mouse cursor to the upper right corner. If the mouse cursor is in the lower left corner the screen saver is deactivated. ═══ 2.7. Archive-Files ═══ The OS/2-Commander has an integrated Archive-Viewer. Archives are showed like normal directories. Inside an archive you can view, copy, move and delete files. It can handle the archive types ZIP, LHZ, ARJ, ZOO, ARC, SQZ and RAR and the self-extracting archives of ZIP, LZH and ARJ. With a definition in the OS2COM.INI it is possible to use every other arcer. The following programs are needed to use the archive-viewer: ARJ: "ARJ.EXE" from Robert K. Jung and the OS/2-version "UNARJ.EXE". The OS/2-version is only used for unpacking if you want to unpack all files and didn't give them a target directory. That's because UNARJ don't support any interesting command line switches. Otherwise ARJ (DOS) will be used. LZH: LH/2 from Peter Fitzsimmons (OS/2-version). ZIP: The above defined programs ZIP/UNZIP for OS/2 from InfoZip. ARC: The OS/2-version 6.0 "ARC2.EXE" from SEA. ZOO: The OS/2-version 2.1 with above defined name from Rahul Dhesi. SQZ: The DOS-version 1.08.3 from J. Hammarberg. RAR: The DOS-version 1.51 from Eugene Roshal. The OS/2-Commander will detect archives files with a different than the standard-extension. When pressing ENTER e.g. on a ZIP-file with the extension ".SA0" OS2COM will detect a ZIP-archive and start the archive-viewer. To get full advantage of the archive functions you have to configure the arcer in the OS2COM.INI! ═══ 3. How to register ═══ This section describes how to register the program. ═══ 3.1. from outside Germany ═══ This program is Shareware! Not public domain and not Freeware! If you want to use it for more than 30 days, you have to pay for it! If you don't register, you're not allowed to use the program for more than 30 days! After that time you have to register or delete the program! REGISTERING Send me or my bank US $30 or more for private use, US $50 for a commercial use. I also accept cheques made out in your currency, but I prefer them made out in DM (German Mark). If you are resident in a country of the european union (EU) you can of course send me an Euro-Check made out in DM, or cash (DM). Then the price is the same as for a registration from inside Germany. If you trust the post you can send the money cash (no coins!) in a letter (perhaps a registered letter). That saves me a lot of fees for a cheque in a foreign currency or you the fee for a cheque in DM or a bank transfer. I accept foreign currency, all I want is an amount of about US $30, but don't send me coins! I can not exchange them. Until further notice you're explicitly allowed to use it for more than 30 days without registering. However, if you can afford it, I would also appreciate your payment. If not, maybe you could send me something else? Something that you can afford, perhaps a bottle of your famous wine, even if it's only a nice postcard. If you would like to receive a keyfile on a diskette, send me a letter with a diskette and I'll put your key and the newest version on it and send it back to you. However, if you want to use the OS/2-Commander without any restrictions for more than 30 days, you need a key. This offer refers exclusive to user in countries of the former Eastern Bloc, like Ex-USSR, Ex-Yugoslavia, Romania. Problems and know bugs ═══ This section describes known problems and how to solve them. ═══ 4.1. Program termination / SYS3175 ═══ Sometimes OS/2-Commander terminates without any message or with SYS3175 when working inside an archive, e.g. when trying to view or copy a file, or when starting the external viewer or editor. This seems to be a memory problem, no specific rules to reproduces this could be found yet. You can solve/avoid the problem by defining the name of the archiv programs or the viewer/editor without the exetension. Then a different function to start the external arcer is used and the problem will not occur. ═══ 4.2. External editor/viewer doesn't work ═══ If you define a DOS- or WPS program as your external editor or viewer, you have to strip the extension from the definition! If you define the program with extension, a different and much faster method to start the program is used, but this doesn't work with DOS programs or programs running on the WPS. Strip the extension and it will work. ═══ 5. What's new with this version ═══ News and changes in version 0.99 - CTRL-ENTER no longer inserts spaces to the command line and it now inserts the name at the current cursor position ein and is not simply appending to the command line. - In ZIP, LZH, ARJ, ARC, ZOO and RAR archives it is now possible to edit files with F4/ALT-F4. This can cause problems if the file you want to edit is in a subdirectory of the archive. - New switch HistMax in the OS2COM.INI (section [StartUp]). e.g. HistMax 100 I suppose not to use a value higher than 1000. This number defines the maximum number of commands that OS/2-Commander stores. The commands are stored in the file OS2COM.HIS when leaving the program and will be read automatically at the next program start. This means that the history now is permanent. Additional to ALT-F8 the History-Window can now be called with CTRL-F8. With that the complete history is compared with the current command line and only these commands that matches with the command line will be shown. In principle this is like CTRL-Cursor_Up, but as a list. Hi Ralph,t his new function is dedicated to Eileen, your 4 weeks old daughter! Congratulations to you and your wife. - CTRL-X scrolls backwards through the history. - CTRL-Cursor_Down searches backwards through the history. - Added support for the arcer RAR. For it there is a new line 'RAR:' in the INI (section [Arcer]). e.g. 'RAR: c:\tools\arc\rar.exe'. - 'Wide'- 'Large'- and 'Brief'- filelist implemented. Therefore the parameters for 'LWList' and 'RWList' in the OS2COM.INI changed. Instead of 'Yes' and 'No' now you have to use 'Full', 'Wide', 'Large', 'Brief' and 'Info'. - New switch 'DesInfo' in the OS2COM.INI (section [StartUp]). 'DesInfo Yes' turns on the showing of the 4OS2/4DOS descriptions in the DESCRIPT.ION by default. The descriptions are only showed if the other panel is the Info-Window. You can switch DesInfo within OS/2-Commander with CTRL-D. - Full support for 4OS2/4DOS descriptions. OS/2-Commander will copy, move and delete them together with a file. - On Novell-system OS/2-Commander sometimes did not show all directories. This is fixed. - Enhanced Sysop/FILES.BBS support. SHIFT-F5/SHIFT-F6 will copy or move additionally to the file also the entry in the FILES.BBS. - In the History window you can delete commands with DEL. - added Help with F1 in the viewer and FIND window. - Command line and Usermenu now is also available inside an archive. - PKZIP-support removed. To zip and unzip files you need Info-ZIP's UnZip and ZIP. - Now you can select/deselect files with the SPACE bar if the command line is empty. - new switch for the Find-Function. With /S added to the filename you want to search, OS/2-Commander will search only in the current directory and it's subdirectories, not the complete drive. - CTRL-N (or via menu) compares to directories. - In MNU-Files you can use comments only if the ";" is the first character of that line. valid is: ; This is a comment line not valid is: F1: OS2SCAN /S ; start virus scanner ═══ 6.
