System
Requirements
To install PC-cillin you need the
following:
Windows
95 or 98
486
DX66 or faster CPU
16
MB RAM
10
MB free hard drive space
Also recommended:
28.8 or faster modem or other Internet connection for virus pattern and
program updates
A web browser, for example Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer
3 blank floppies for creating a set of rescue disks
Installing
PC-cillin 6.0
Installing PC-cillin
is a breeze and takes about five to ten minutes. During installation, you
are prompted to have PC-cillin create "Rescue Disks." These are clean,
bootable floppy diskettes that you can use to start your computer if it
ever crashes or if it is infected with a boot-sector virus. If you have
a modem or are connected to the Internet, immediately after installing,
PC-cillin can connect to the Internet and download and install the latest
virus pattern file and any program updates.
Installing the beta:
-
If you downloaded the trial version of
PC-cillin from the web, unzip the files to the c:\temp
directory.
-
Next, locate the PC-cillin files directory
and double-click the Setup file. For example, c:\temp\disk1\setup.exe
or, if you are installing from a CD, d:\pcc6b1\disk1\disk1\setup.exe
-
PC-cillin will check your system memory,
boot sector, Windows and Program Files directories to be sure they are
clean before it will install the program files. See If PC-cillin finds
a boot virus… below, to find out what to do if your system is infected
with a boot virus.
Install
choices
-
After PC-cillin has scanned your system
and cleaned any infected files, you are presented with the following five
installation choices:
-
Parental Web Filtering Installs
PC-cillin Web Filter, which provides a means of blocking whatever
web sites you deem objectionable
-
Malicious Object Protection Enable
PC-cillin Web Security, which provides protection against harmful
Java and ActiveX programs that can be invisibly installed onto your computer
when you browse the web
-
Add Trend Active Desktop Item Installs
a virus calendar on your desktop (requires Internet Explorer 4.0 or later
or Windows 98)
-
Add Trend Active Channel Installs
Trend's award winning web site, www.antivirus.com, as on of your Internet
Explorer 4.0 or later Channel Bar
-
Update Program after Install Connects
to the Internet, where PC-cillin will download the latest virus pattern
file and any PC-cillin program updates that are available
By default, PC-cillin installs all
the options described above.
-
To complete the installation, click Next
and
follow the screen instructions.
If PC-cillin
finds a boot virus…
If PC-cillin detects a boot virus
prior to installation, that means it is not safe to install. (Boot sector
viruses are especially difficult viruses because they occupy a sensitive
part of the hard drive, the boot sector, and load into memory whenever
the system is started.)
In this case, get a clean, bootable
floppy disk (for example the one you made when installing Windows 95 or
98) and be sure it's write protected. When prompted by PC-cillin, insert
the floppy into the a:\ drive and restart your computer. When the
computer restarts, you'll see a DOS prompt. Enter the following, commands,
pressing the enter key after each line:
c:
[press enter]
cd pscan.tmp
[press enter]
pscan /a
[press enter]
PC-cillin will clean your boot sector
(and all files) so that it is safe to install the main PC-cillin program.
But be aware: boot viruses spread easily and it is likely that one or more
of your floppy diskettes are also infected . After installing PC-cillin,
run the Floppy Scan Task and check all your floppies for
viruses.
Hit
the ground running...
Even before you install PC-cillin, it checks your main system files
for viruses! Then, once it's installed, PC-cillin keeps your computer virus-free
over the coming months and years by running a series of automated tasks.
Here's what PC-cillin will do "straight
out of the box":
Checks for viruses every time you Open, Copy, Move,
or Save a file
Monitors your Word sessions for macro viruses, using MacroTrapTM
Scans and cleans all files on your hard drive every Friday
Scans all program files for viruses every month
Checks all your saved documents for macro viruses
Protects you against nasty Java and ActiveX applets while web surfing
Here's what you can have PC-cillin
do with just the click of a button:
Scan every file on your system and clean any infected files
"Quick Scan" any file just by dragging it to an open PC-cillin window!
Scan floppy diskettes and clean any infected files
Check all your new Word document(s) for macro viruses
Check all your new Excel document(s) for macro viruses
No Limits
Of course, if you're a person who
likes
to fiddle with and customize your software, there is no limit to the Scan
Tasks you can have PC-cillin perform. You can "set and forget" as many
Tasks as you see fit.
I
just want to do a quick check of a file…
PC-cillin can run a quick check of any file, for example if you want to
double check a compressed file before e-mailing it to someone.
Here's how:
All you have to do is "drag" the file(s) in question over to the open PC
window. Zap! That's it. As soon as you let up on the mouse button, PC-cillin
will check the file for viruses and report back to you on the status.
Or, from Explorer just right-click on the file in question and choose Properties
from
the pop-up menu that appears. Click the File Status tab to do a
quick scan of the file.
I
want to be sure there are no viruses hiding anywhere on my computer!
Good idea. In fact, the
Virus Doctors at Trend recommend that you do a complete once-over on all
your computer files right after installing PC-cillin.
Here's how:
-
Double-click the PC-cillin icon
on the Windows Taskbar (shown above).
-
Next, click the Scan button, then
double-click Scan Manager icon
to bring up the list of Tasks.
-
Select the first Task on the list, Complete
scan after installation, and then click Run
.
Viola! That's it. You'll notice that complete
scans can take as long as 10 minutes to finish. So, why is this necessary
if PC-cillin already scanned your computer before installing? Well, that
scan was to check your computer's memory, the hard drive's boot sector,
and all your most critical files for viruses. But to save time, that scan
did not check your Word documents, game files, etc. That's something you
should do.
PC-cillin
caught a virus! What should I do?
Kill it. That is, clean
the file, kill the virus.
Here's how:
-
If you're running one of PC-cillin's pre-set
Tasks, any infected files are cleaned automatically. In this case you don't
have to do anything except, perhaps, check the virus log and see the results.
-
If you're doing an immediate scan using
the Scan Wizard, PC-cillin gives you the option to take one of the
following actions on any virus(es) found:
Clean (and
backup the file before cleaning) infected files
Quarantine (save the infected file to a special directory)
Delete the file, virus and all
Pass, or do nothing with the infected file
Rename (but not clean) the file so it won't be accidentally
used
We recommend that you Clean infected files.
If it cannot be cleaned, (for example due to the nature of the virus or
because the file is corrupted) then the safest thing to do is quarantine
it. Because uncleanable files are usually program files (.exe, .com, .sys)
and not document files (.doc, .xls, etc) they are usually easily replaced
with a new one from the program's original disk(s).
Putting
viruses under quarantine
Let's say you've got an infected file
(or a file that you suspect is infected) that can't be cleaned but you
don't want to delete it. In this case, we say "Quarantine It."
Quarantining an infected file is a
way to check the file, and, if infected but uncleanable, put it safely
away until a time in the future when it can be cleaned (for example, after
the next release of the virus pattern file). Alternatively, you can send
quarantined files to Trend for analysis. There are two ways to quarantine
files, automatically, through the Action you select for viruses
detected during your routine Tasks, or by hand.
Here's how:
Click the Quarantine button,
then the Quarantine icon
that appears.
-
Click Add, then browse your directory
to find the file you want to quarantine. Double-click the file you want
to quarantine. PC-cillin will perform a quick scan and tell you whether
it appears to be infected. Your options:
-
PC-cillin finds a virus: Clean
it, or move it to the Quarantine directory without cleaning
-
PC-cillin doesn't find a virus:
Quarantine
it
anyway, or leave it alone.
-
If you have a bunch of files that are
already quarantined, you can select any one of and either try cleaning
it, or send it to Trend Micro's virus doctors for analysis.
-
Click Clean
to
try cleaning the file.
-
Click Submit
to send the suspect file to Trend.
OK,
my system is clean. Now, how do I keep it clean?
PC-cillin is already
set up to keep you system virus-free. You don't have to do anything
to
ensure that your system will be, and stay, virus-free. PC-cillin gives
you this certainty by using two layers of protection:
Scheduled Scans check the files most likely to be infected
by viruses. These include Internet files and document files. Monthly
files scans will check every file on the system.
Real-time
Scanning watches over your system and will detect a virus as soon as
it is arrives at your computer. Each time you Open, Copy,
Save,
or Move a file, the real-time scanner performs a quick check of
the file. Because it work invisibly, in the background, you probably won't
even know it's there.
Well, if real-time scanning is
always on, you might ask, why do I need to run Scheduled Scans?
The answer is "human nature." It's human nature to, sooner or later, change
or disable real-time scanning. When and if that happens, no problem. Scheduled
scans are always there to take up the slack.
How
do I guard against new viruses?
PC-cillin is already
set up so that every month, when you are connected to the Internet, it
will automatically contact Trend Micro and download the latest virus pattern
file and any PC-cillin program updates. Both are free and automatic for
one year after registration. If you are using a 28.8 Kbs modem to connect
to the Internet, expect the downloads to take about 10 minutes.
You can also choose to do the download
the pattern file whenever you see fit.
Here's how:
From the main Trend PC-cillin window,
click Update, then the
Update Now
button.
-
Choose whether you will access the file
from a floppy disk or the Internet (most common)
-
If you use a dial-up connection, you can
probably skip the Use Proxy Server option and just click Next.
If you are at an office and connect to the Internet using a LAN, you may
need to check the Use Proxy Server option and enter your proxy information
(your system administrator will know).
-
Finally, click Next.
What is
the virus pattern file?
To detect and clean viruses PC-cillin consults an extensive database of
virus "signatures," (inert snippets of virus code) that holds the signatures
of thousands and thousands of viruses. This file is called the Virus Pattern.
As new viruses are written, released
onto the public, and discovered, Trend collects their tell-tale signatures
and incorporates the information into the Virus Pattern file. Obviously,
it is very important to keep the virus pattern file up to date. By some
estimates, more than a thousand new viruses are created each year, a rate
of several each day. New Virus Pattern files are made available every two
weeks or so. Home uses probably don't need to update the file any more
often than monthly. If you're an office user, consider scheduling weekly
updates. Virus Pattern file updates are available free for a year
to registered PC-cillin users.
Making
a Rescue Disk
A "Rescue Disk" is a bootable floppy disk that has been checked
for viruses and is write protected. In addition to this bootable floppy,
PC-cillin backs up some critical systems files and copies them to two additional
floppies.
We strongly recommend that you have
PC-cillin create these Rescue Disks for you during installation. If you
choose to defer, however, please be sure to make them as soon as possible.
Here's how:
-
Label your three floppies PC-cillin
Rescue Disk 1, 2, & 3, then insert the first into the a:\
drive.
-
Click the Windows Start button,
then Programs and Trend PC-cillin 6.0.
-
Click Create rescue disk, then
the Start button in the windows that appears.
-
As each floppy is finished, remove it
and immediately write protect it by sliding up the plastic button
that is in the upper left hand corner of the back of the disk. The disk
is write protected when you can see through both squares in the upper corners.
Creating the Rescue Disks takes
about 10 minutes.
Making
certain Web sites off limits
When you install PC-cillin you get full virus protection right off the
bat, without having to make any configuration changes. For protection against
offensive web contents, PC-cillin also offers WebTrap, Trend's user-configurable
utility that let's you make whatever web sites you want "off limits" to
other users of the computer.
Here's how:
-
From the main Trend PC-cillin window,
click the WebTrap button, then the
Web
Filter icon .
-
Put a check in the Enable Web Filter
box.
-
Add one or more URLs to the Restricted
Sites box.
-
If your web browser is currently opened
to an objectionable site, just click the Add button. The URL will
be automatically to the Restricted Sites box.
-
If you want to type in a list of many
different URLs, click the Add button and enter the first URL. Be
sure to include the http://www
prefix if appropriate.
-
Check Extend to all sub-pages to
have PC-cillin block the entire web site, not just the specified page.
-
Access to your list of URLs can be password
protected. Check Enable password and enter a password to have PC-cillin
prompt for this password the next time the Web Filter screen is
opened.
Keeping
your computer safe from harmful Web programs
Web
Security protects against malicious Java and ActiveX applets. Although
most web sites are completely harmless, it is possible, and it does happen,
that someone will create a small program and set it to run, invisibly,
whenever their web page is accessed. These programs may destroy data, steal
your passwords, financial data, etc. PC-cillin's Web Security protects
you against these threats.
Here's how to use Web Security:
-
From the main Trend PC-cillin window,
click the WebTrap button, then the
Web
Security icon.
-
Put a check in the Enable Web Security
box,
then click Prompt for action to have PC-cillin inform you of the
potentially harmful web program. Otherwise, check Block programs
to have PC-cillin perform the action automatically.
With Web Security enabled, PC-cillin
will monitor all Java and ActiveX applets that are silently downloaded
to your computer whenever you are browsing the Web.
