Puppet Works is a reconfigurable, electromechanical puppet for 3D animation motion input. Puppet Works is used by animators for three dimensional (3D) computer animation. Puppet Works is a system of rugged, high quality, instrumented 2 degree of freedom joints which can be connected in a Tinker Toy® like fashion to represent any 3 dimensional model. A software utility then allows the user to quickly and easily `connect' the mechanical stick puppet to their 3D computer model counterparts. Once connected, the motions of the puppet will drive the motions of the animation. These motions can then be captured in either a continuous or a stop frame fashion to create the animation. Puppet Works both reduces the number of hours required to produce these animations while allowing the artist/producer to work in a creative, more intuitive and natural way.
