After frazzling our brains and ourselves with those colored blocks, we wondered if THE AMAZING BEZ MAN could again reach this level of mind-twisting, brain-numming BEZ MANIA. Not to worry! This month, in fine tradition, BEZ presents JUMP PIT, a game derived from a 14th century Japanese game called Hiroimono, which is unpronounceable in English and which is played on a GO board with GO stones. In JUMP PIT, the object is for one player (your computer) to set out a pattern of stones on the board and for the other player (you) to pick up the stones. However, there are a few rules which govern how you may pick up the stones. Put down that head of cabbage and pay attention.... ^1PLAYING THE GAME There are three simple rules for playing JUMP PIT. You must first pick an open pit as your first move. You do this by pressing the letter of the desired pit, or if you are using a mouse, by clicking on the pit. Next, you must pick a direction to jump. The computer will indicate the legal directions with arrows. Press the desired arrow key, or click on the arrow to make your next jump. You continue picking directions until you either complete the puzzle or run out of moves. The third and final rule is that you may not reverse directions from the previous jump. For example, if you moved UP on your last jump, you cannot move DOWN on your next one. If you make a jump and then decide that the jump will not allow you to complete the puzzle, you can undo the move by using the menu option and selecting ^1UNDO LAST MOVE^0. With the menu option you can also restart a puzzle by selecting ^1START GAME OVER^0. ^1CHANGING THE PUZZLES If you get stumped by a certain puzzle you can use the menu option to load a new puzzle. There are seven puzzles from which to choose. The ^1START NEW GAME^0 option will load the next puzzle and the ^1RESET TO GAME 1^0 option will go back to the first puzzle. ^1ACTIVE KEYS The following function keys are active: - Display the HELP screen. - Load a new puzzle. - Toggle the sound and speech on or off. - Start over or undo a move. - Message from BEZ. - Exit a menu without change or QUIT program. If you have a mouse, the cursor on the screen looks like a shovel. Place it on the function keys listed, and click to activate the function. You may also use the mouse to answer Yes-or-No questions. The left button is YES and the right button is NO. ^C^1OUTSIDE ON DISK MONTHLY To run this program outside of the On Disk Monthly menu, type ^1JUMP^0.
