One hand is dealt and you try to draw to the highest hand possible to increase your winnings. If you should run out of money, you can always talk to Guido "the Loan Shark". He will be more than happy to lend you some more . . . at very reasonable rates. Rank Order of Poker Hands Royal Flush Straight Flush Four of a Kind Full House Flush Straight Three of a Kind Two Pairs One Pair PLAYING THE GAME Once you have cleared the title screen (by pressing any key while it is displayed), you will be asked whether or not you want sound effects. Answer "Y" or "N" appropriately. You will then be asked if you want instructions. If you answer "Y", a brief page of instructions will be displayed. The next screen displays the rank order of poker hands in this game from highest to lowest. Following this is a screen giving the payoffs for the various hands based on a bet of one dollar. Note that a pair pays one dollar per dollar bet and is thus a break-even hand. Now you are ready to play the game. ^1Placing a bet The game starts you off with a bank of $100. The bet selection screen displays your bank (the amount of money you currently have) and the range of bets you can place based on your bank. Enter how much you wish to bet and press the "Enter" key. ^1Initial Deal In the upper left corner of the screen is your current balance or winnings; your bet is in the upper right corner. The cards, displayed in the center of the screen, are dealt and flipped through in slot machine fashion. Once the cards have stabilized you may select the cards to be discarded. ^1Discarding You can select any combination of the five cards you wish: none, all five, the first one, the second and fifth, etc. Using the left and right arrow keys, move the cursor to the card you wish to discard and press the space bar. The word "Discarded" will appear underneath the selected card. Continue this procedure until you have selected all of the cards you wish to discard. If you change your mind about any of your selections, move back to the card and press the space bar again. This acts as a toggle and will deselect the card. Once you are sure about your choices (all cards with "Discarded" below them will be discarded), press the "Enter" key. ^1Final Deal If you have selected cards to discard, new cards are dealt. Your final hand is displayed and the screen will display how much you lost or won and your new balance. The bottom two lines of the screen list the options available at this point: Play again, Change bet, Reset game, Sound off (on), or Quit. Press the first letter of the desired option. Pressing "P" will cause another hand to be dealt; i.e. the sequence Initial Deal to Final Deal is repeated, keeping your current bank and bet. "C" takes you to the bet selection screen and deals another hand using your new bet while keeping your current bank. "R" starts an entirely new game beginning with the sound effects prompt. "S" toggles the sound off and on. "Q" exits Poker Slot Machine (with a prompt to confirm your desire to quit). Guido the Loan Shark Any time you run out of money while playing the game, you will be given the opportunity to obtain a loan from Guido. Answering "Y" will give you a new $100 bank. Guido is quite generous and will continue to loan you money every time you run out, if you so desire. Breaking the Bank Poker Slot Machine has a limit of approximately $32,000 of winnings. Once you have surpassed that limit, you have "broken the bank". At this point you can either play a new game or quit. ^1OPTIONS FOR RUNNING POKER SLOT MACHINE Poker Slot Machine can be run from the DOS prompt with the following options: M Starts the program in monochrome mode.
