Support & FAQ
At iSV we are often asked technical questions by users. We have decided to place answers to the most common problems that users have experienced here so that even out of office hours technical support is available.
Compatibility issues
At the time of writing we are aware of several other software products that can interfere with our applications. If you are using one of these products then try removing it from your Boot sequence (or not running it) to see if this solves the problem.
!Virtualise.
!Director.
Module which flashes the keyboard LED lights in time with the hard disk.
!Activity by Justin Fletcher (Acorn User 200th cover CD)
AllWCD (All Write Click Drag) by Justin Fletcher
Using our products on Risc OS 4
If you are using any of our software on Risc OS 4 then you will need to download the following patch application. This fixes a problem with Risc OS 4 and OS_File calls. Once downloaded drag the !Boot application from inside the archive on top of the !Boot application on your hard disk. Once the computer is reset the patch will become active.
Q. How can I disable the loading screen on any iSV software?
A. This can be done very easily. Shift double click on the application concerned and then Shift double click on the !Run file. This will load the !Run file into Edit. Find the line that reads Filer_Run (name_of_application$Dir).!iKick. Now simply delete this line and re save the !Run file. We recomend that you make a backup of the !Run file before doing this.
Manuals
Q. The on-screen manual won't print or stops after printing 2/3rd of a page.
A. You are using !Printers 1.52 or !Printers 1.53 without the correct patches from Acorn. If you have !Printers 1.52 then you need to upgrade to !Printers 1.53 and obtain the latest set of patches from Acorns web site. If you already have !Printers 1.53 then you just need the patches from Acorns web site. Q. The on-screen manual doesn't have any pictures and uses all my RAM.
A. Some modules can interfere with our applications. The usual cause of this problem is running either Virtulise or a small Module that flashes the LED lights on the keyboard in time with the hard disk light. Both of these products interfere with OS_File calls used by our products.
A. Also note that this can happen under Risc OS 4. If you have Risc OS 4 installed in your machine then download the global Risc OS 4 patch module from the link above.
Typography 2100
Q. When I try and print or use some fonts from the Openface group I get error messages.
A. Some applications seem to be having problems with two of the fonts from the OpenFace group. The two fonts in question are GylesSans.Outline.Black.Extended.Oblique and GylesSans.Outline.Bold.Condensed.Oblique. At present we recommend copying this group to a hard disk, then deleteing these two weights along with the Messages file that may be present inside the !Fonts folder. A patch to prevent this problem will be released asap. Q. I can't install my fonts into Font Directory Pro.
A. The installer on the CD is designed for Font Directory 2. We have contacted LookSystems about this problem and they have promised to send a copy of Font Directory Pro so we can amend the installer. In the mean time copy the fonts to an Acorn !Fonts folder first then install them from their into Font Directory Pro as you would normally.
DrawWorks Designer
Q. When I export the current selections as a sprite or GIFF the colours are wrong.
A. You are running in a mode with more than 256 colours, change to a 256 colour mode before making the sprite/GIFF. Q. When I click on some DWD tools (such as Mould) I get an error.
A. Before using any special tools on the DWD tool bar you must have an object selected. Q. I cannot seem to wrap text around a circle or mould it.
A. You need to convert the text to a path before using the curving or moulding tools. Q. Why does the DrawWorks Designer toolbar keep flickering?
A. It doesn't normally. This is caused by a utility called 3DRomPatch which will be loaded at some point in your !Boot sequence. Remove this and all will be well.
DrawWorks Millennium
Q.When I tryand use special tools I get a save window quickly flash on screen and then the computer locks.
You are using a module called AllWCD (All Write Click Drag) - which will be in your Boot sequence. This fights with the DrawWorks OLE system and causes problems. Remove this module from !Boot and then reset the machine. DrawWorks will then be able to work correctly.
Mr Clippy
Q. I am using Mr Clippy with ArcFS and keep getting memory errors.
A. This is a problem with more recent versions of ArcFS. We have contacted Argo, who are now responsible for ArcFS, many times but have not recieved an answer. If you have this problem then we suggest you go directly to Argo. If you can find a version of ArcFS that does work correctly can you send the version number to ourselves. This is so we can find out exactly which versions work and which do not.
As far as we are aware ArcFS V2.23 will work with a RiscPC computer and Mr Clippy.
Penulator
Q. I cannot load the Penulator software, it crashes with repeated errors.
A. You have a copy of a module called IClear installed on your system. Penulator cannot be loaded after !iClear. If you load Penulator first both will function correctly. Also see if you are running an application called Director, as this has caused problems on some systems. We have also had reports that !StrongMen and Minervas pointer flasher can cause this sort of error. Thanks to Martyn Fox (the Author of IClear) you can download an updated version that will work with Penulator.
Q. I want to connect two computers together, but one of them doesn't have a hard disk, will this be ok?
A. SerialNET can be used on a machine with a floppy disk, but its use will be a little limited. SerialNET requires some local storage and without a hard disk that means the floppy. You will be able to share files but running applications and large network printing jobs will not be possible.
ViVID enhancers
Q.Can I use a version of ViVID with a VGA monitor or 14" svga monitor?
a. although vivid20 may work with some 14" SVGA monitors we do not guarantee that it will function. No version of ViVID will work with VGA monitors. Most ViVID20 screen modes will work with 15" or 17" SVGA monitors.
