Boise boosts rim performance with water repellent
Company: Boise Building Products

Boise Building Products has introduced a new rim board that can also be used as a beam in situations where lower stresses exist. The product has also been treated with a water repellent to improve tolerance to poor weather conditions on site.

Called Versa-Lam R, it is based upon Boises proven Versa-Lam engineered wood, it comes in 38mm and 44mm thicknesses, and in the same depths as the companys BCI Joists. Versa-Lam R rim has a bending strength of 16N/mm2 (joist applications), and a stiffness (E value) of 11,500N/mm2 which is on average 88% of Versa-Lam values.  The compression and shear values are identical to those published and approved for Versa-Lam.

As a further refinement in its manufacture, a water repellent coating is applied to make the Versa-Lam R even more stable and resistant to atmospheric change, and resultant swelling or shrinkage.

In common with its policy of working on innovations with timber frame designers, Boise linked up with Scottish timber frame specialists, Carronvale, when developing the new rim material.

It became apparent that a Versa-Lam type product, which includes such a water repellent coating, could develop into a rim material for improved stability, particularly in multi-storey timber frame designs.

Versa Lam R is also ideal in situations where designs have to take account of disproportionate collapse. Available in lengths starting at 6m, with other lengths available depending upon the application, designers can consider the specification of Versa-Lam R as a structural member that will be fully able to support joists on the floor above an area of collapse.

This strong and cost-effective board is also excellent as a stair closure material with minimum build-out.
