When you commission a window panel, it is important for the stained glass artist to understand which of the following factors you think are important. So, can you identify how many of the following your commission should provide?

• Colour
• Texture / Character
• Source of light to a room
• Privacy / obscured view
• Period accuracy or contemporary interest
• Artistic / flair interpretation
  

What do you want the commission to say' about you?

You need to give the artist some discretion in the design phase, as they understand the issues with cutting fiddly bits of glass, or countering inherent weaknesses in the construction. However it would be wise to decide how much of a brief you want to put across to the artist - maybe even jotting down some key likes or dislikes on which you will not negotiate! Please think especially about colours, style / period, the subject and shape etc. If you feel able to sketch out your ideas then that is often useful - it doesn't need to be artistic.
