William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology

Led by their lifelong interest in Kentucky’s cultural history, Dr. William S. Webb and Dr. William D. Funkhouser established the Department of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky in 1927. The pair went on to found the William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology in 1931 as a nonprofit educational institution, intended to benefit the students, faculty, and staff of the university as well as the citizens of the general community. As the key archaeological curation facility in Kentucky, the museum houses more than 5,800 separate collections, documenting more than 10,000 years of human habitation in the Commonwealth.

Fayette CountyThe primary goals of the museum are to maintain anthropological collections, to support anthropological research, and to spread anthropological knowledge. The museum has developed exhibits and programs that serve to enrich visitors’ perspectives on the achievements of other cultures as well as guided tours and outreach programs that help educate future generations about the cultural and biological diversity of human beings.
