The Kentucky Center for the
Performing Arts

The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts opened as a statewide performing arts center in 1983. The large Robert S. Whitney Hall is the performance venue for a wide variety of arts organizations, including the Louisville Orchestra, the Louisville Ballet, the Kentucky Opera, and a Broadway series. The smaller Moritz von Bomhard Theater is the home of Stage One, Louisville’s theater for young audiences. The MeX Theater is an intimate black box favored by local arts and theater groups presenting original plays, innovative productions of music and dance, and literary readings.Jefferson County

The center is also the home of a diverse array of 20th-century works of art on permanent public display throughout the facility. It includes works by world-renowned artists like Alexander Calder, John Chamberlain, Jean Dubuffet, Louise Nevelson, Joan Miró, and Tony Smith. This collection was guided by Wendell Cherry and made possible by generous donations. In addition to the permanent collection, the Kentucky Center sponsors rotating exhibits of local and regional artists in its gallery in the main lobby.

The Kentucky Center offers extensive education programs, including performances, teacher’s workshops, and other outreach activities. Special tours of the facility and the art collection are available with advance notice; call Customer Services at (502) 562-0187. There is a $1 fee per person.

The center is located on Louisville’s riverfront. For more information, contact:
