Frazier Historical Arms Museum

The Frazier Historical Arms Museum, in collaboration with Great Britain’s Royal Armouries, holds in trust one of the world’s greatest collections of arms, armor, and related historical artifacts. The permanent collection features the arms and equipment of the American Colonial era museumthrough the early 20th century and includes the weapons of famous politicians and celebrities, noted frontiersmen, and soldiers. Many of the artifacts were decorated by well-known craftsmen, making them not only marvels of engineering, but also great works of art.

In addition, through a unique and historic collaboration with the Royal Armouries, the Frazier displays arms and armor of kings and knights, with European artifacts dating back 1,000 years. It’s all housed in a three-story, 74,000-square-foot facility on Main Street in downtown Louisville featuring state-of-the-art interactive audio-visual technologies. The ground floor includes a range of educational activities and the Arms of Distinction Gallery, a presentation of exceptional and historically important objects from a variety of periods and cultures. The second floor houses the museum’s permanent collection of arms and related artifacts—more than 600 objects largely of American origin—presented as part of a survey of American historical culture and its overseas roots. On the third floor is the presentation of the Royal Armouries, USA, a series of changing exhibits featuring items from Britain’s oldest museum.Jefferson Co.

The Frazier offers numerous resources tailored to teachers and students. Tour programs include classroom programs that tie into Core Content and “History Mystery” interactive programs that guide students on a search for clues throughout the museum. Costumed interpreters offer daily living history presentations, which also can be incorporated into school visits. The museum also offers outreach programs, hands-on activities, and lesson plans designed around Kentucky curriculum.

The museum’s web site includes extensive information about the collections and programs, along with links for teachers and students to historical and educational resources.
