WhatsUp Gold Version 3.5 Release Notes Ipswitch, Inc. http://www.ipswitch.com In This File ============ - Welcome - Installation - What's New in Version 3.5 - For More Information - Documentation Notes - Release Notes WELCOME TO WHATSUP GOLD ----------------------- Thank you for your interest in WhatsUp Gold. WhatsUp Gold is a scalable, enterprise version of the original WhatsUp that has been designed from the ground up for large, hierarchical networks. With an all-new multithreaded architecture, WhatsUp Gold easily monitors multiple maps and/or multiple subnets simultaneously. By providing multiple monitoring views of the core network database, WhatsUp Gold allows you to instantly view the critical network information you need to determine the status of your network. WhatsUp Gold monitors vital network elements and system services and generates an alarm when there is a problem. It also facilitates remote support and diagnosis by providing beeper, pager, e-mail, and voice notification and allowing users to view the status of a network map from a Web browser. Designed for PCs operating with Windows 95 or Windows NT, WhatsUp Gold can be installed wherever needed and does not require expensive, dedicated hardware. It will run in the background on your PC. WhatsUp Gold will work with any 32-bit TCP/IP stack, such as those bundled with Windows NT and Windows 95 and you can configure WhatsUp Gold and start monitoring your network without any special training. INSTALLATION ------------ Unzip the download file into a temporary directory and execute INSTALL. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 3.5 ------------------------- Version 3.5 of WhatsUp Gold offers many new capabilities, including the following: o IPX monitoring. WhatsUp Gold can now monitor a network element that uses Novell NetWare's IPX protocol. In addition, the Auto Load and WinNet tools can detect an element that runs IPX, create an icon in the map for it, and automatically begin monitoring the element. o Full web administration. Remote web access to the WhatsUp Gold system now offers nearly all of the WhatsUp Gold capabilities. Users can log on to the web server, and depending on their assigned access privileges, can view map and host status, logs, and configure maps, hosts, reports, and users. o Run WhatsUp Gold as an NT service. You can now run WhatsUp Gold as an NT service and use the web interface to view maps and monitor your network. o New SNMP Graphing Utility. You can graph real-time SNMP data, such as the packet input and output of a monitored router, to provide additional monitoring and analysis of network performance. o Notification of SNMP traps. In addition to reporting SNMP traps in the logs, now WhatsUp Gold can send a notification message (via pager, beeper, e-mail, voice) when a trap is received for a network element. o Network scanning improvements. WhatsUp Gold Version 3.5 vastly speeds the process of network scanning and discovery. In addition, version 3.5 can scan all IP ports on networked hosts, identifying the services running on each port. Network administrators can now easily determine which ports are active and make sure the correct ports are being used by each service. o Network statistics capture and reporting. Version 3.5 retains monitored network performance statistics, such as response time, total number of polls, total lost packets, and minimum and maximum response time. o SMS and NTT pager protocol support. Version 3.5 supports the SMS and NTT protocols, so European and Japanese users can enjoy the full benefits of WhatsUp Gold's powerful alphanumeric pager notification options. o New network tools for additional monitoring and for finding information: - Throughput tool lets you test data throughput on the connection between your computer and a remote computer. - LDAP directory tool lets you search directories that use the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol for names and information. - Quote tool lets you view quotations from a quote server. FOR MORE INFORMATION -------------------- For information on setting up and using WhatsUp Gold to map your network, monitor it, and receive notification of hosts and services that are down, refer to the following: o Download the WhatsUp Gold User's Guide (.pdf file) from the Ipswitch Web site: http://www.ipswitch.com Note: You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the .pdf file. You can also download the Acrobat Reader from our Web site. o WhatsUp Gold help system -- provides how to, reference, and context-sensitive help information. o The WhatsUp Gold page on the Ipswitch Web site DOCUMENTATION NOTES ------------------- Note the following late updates and corrections that appear in the help system but not in the user's guide. o In Chapter 6, the section "Sending Network Status Reports" does not have complete information on the Add/Edit WhatsUp Reports dialog box. See the "Add Report" topic in help (click F1 in the dialog box) for a description of the options. o In Chapter 6, the section "Viewing Network Statistics" states that the counter statistics are cleared for a network element when you acknowledge an alarm. This is wrong. Polling statistics are logged in the map_name.wui file. Each map has an associated .wui file. You can clear the statistics by deleting this file, or by selecting Reset Counters in the web interface. 0 In Chapter 7, in the section "Setting Up User Accounts for the Web Server," Step 6 is wrong. When the option "Automatically save user changes from the web interface" is selected, changes to the Web Users options (the options for web user accounts) will be saved. If you change a host name, add a host or anything else to a map, you MUST go into MAP Settings and press SUBMIT with the "Write map to disk" option enabled to save changes. 0 In Chapter 8, in the section "Setting Up Notifications for Traps," Step 6 refers to trap numbers that can be entered in the On SNMP Trap option. You can enter a number for one of the six standard traps (as identified in he Windows Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ipswitch\WhatsUp\SNMP\Traps If you are unsure of a trap number, you can view the Activity log (after enabling traps) to see what number is associated with a particular trap.
