UFOS Sighted Over Bombay, Remain Unexplained

There have been a series of UFO sightings over Bombay in recent weeks, and net speculation about whether or not their presence could be connected with the collision there between a Saudi 747 and a Russian Ilyushin cargo plane on November 13. The two planes collided during apparently normal procedures. After reporting their positions correctly and acknowledging that they were aware of one another's presence, the tower lost radio contact with both planes simultaneously, although the collision did not take place until two minutes later.

It has become clear from the remains of the aircraft that the Saudi plane received a gash along its top from a wing of the Russian plane, and retained some control until it slid into a field and exploded. However both wings of the Russian plane were severed. In addition, a US Air Force C-130 in the area reported that it saw a glow in the sky like lightning when the planes collided, but mentioned nothing about them falling to the ground.

In news reports in the US the next day, a statement was added to the effect that the American pilots had reported "two fireballs" falling to the ground.

Since November 12, a number of UFO sightings have been reported over the Kandivli and Thane-Panvel sections of the city, both day and night. These areas are not near the area of the crash. Reports have described small objects appearing during the daylight hours as well as at night.

Scientists at the Nehru Planetarium have failed to solve the mystery of the sightings. One object, reported during daylight hours, was seen to shed a segment during the sighting and another, observed at night, disappeared after emitting a beam of light. According to Mr J J Rawal, Jt, director of the Nehru Planetarium "As scientists we do not want to dismiss these reports out of hand. The absence of evidence does not necessarily mean evidence of absence of UFOs. So we are keeping vigil over the sky."

There is no indication that the attention of the pilots of either aircraft involved in the collision were diverted by observing unknown objects. As of November 17, cockpit voice recordings had not been released. Both voice recorders were found. The Saudi recorder is being deciphered in India, while the Russian device has been sent to Moscow for decoding.

Whitley's Comment:

The planes had each other in sight shortly before the crash. There appeared to be absolutely nothing out of the ordinary and communications were clear until the tower lost contact with both aircraft two minutes before the crash. There are some unusually strange unanswered questions regarding this crash, but nothing but rumor to link it to the UFO presence in the area.
