On Aug. 31, the Center for Science in the Public Interest released a study saying Chinese food is not as healthy as Americans believe. The study said that a serving of Kung Pao chicken topped with peanuts had almost the same amount of fat as four McDonald's Quarter Pounders. An order of lo mein was said to have as much salt as a Pizza Hut cheese pizza. Chinese restaurants reported an immediate drop in sales and decried the study as unrepresentative. Some Chinese restaurants reported business was off 20 to 50 percent. Some nutritionists noted that Americans want fat, and eat Chinese dishes with more fat instead of the way the Chinese eat their meals -- heavy on vegetables, rice and noodles.
