Technology Description:

The Digital Flat Panel (DFP) Interface is the industry adopted specification for connecting new digital flat panel monitors to their host computer without the need for expensive analog to digital conversions. This direct digital connection, featuring the PanelLink Digital technology, will enable the transmission of high quality, crystal-clear digital images from the CPU to the flat panel monitor. The specification has both an electrical and a physical interface.

Physical Interface:

The DFP port on the back of the Presario platform is based on the IEEE approved 20-pin MDR connector. This new standard connector offers a solid, secure physical connection while featuring a simple tool-free setup process (Push-Click and Pinch-Pull). Because this connector is the new standard for connecting to digital flat panel monitors, the Presario FP Series Monitors feature the DFP Connector.

Electrical Interface:

Flat panel monitors are digital, and therefore, work best with an all-digital interface. Previously, flat panel displays used analog interfaces. Analog interfaces require digital to analog (D/A) conversion on the motherboard side, and then, analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion in the back of the flat panel monitor. As such, digital-to-analog and then back to digital increases cost and degrades image quality since these conversions inherently accumulate noise. The end result of the noise accumulation of these analog monitor is blurry images and uneven text. This negates the key benefit of flat panel monitors: greater clarity, crisper text. Continued exposure to the inferior images delivered by analog interfaces can also possibly lead to eyestrain and fatigue.

Compaq�s Presario desktop systems and new line of Flat Panel monitors all offer the digital direct signaling capabilities of the DFP interface with PanelLink Digital technology to eliminate the downfalls of Digital Analog and Analog Digital conversions. Compaq delivers crisp, clear images on its FP monitors.

The electrical interface portion of the DFP specification is based on the industry-adopted standard called TMDS. Silicon Images� PanelLink Digital technology is built on the TMDS architecture. This PanelLink Digital technology allows the image to stay digital all the way from the image source in the computer to the image display on the monitor. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®), a standards committee comprised of PC industry leaders, adopted TMDS (featured in PanelLink Digital) as the signaling layer for their new flat panel monitor digital interface standard.

All Presario computers offering DFP support are equipped with PanelLink Digital to ensure the delivery of the highest-quality, crystal-clear, digital images from the CPU to flat panel monitors.
