If some programs are giving problems with the ports, it may be
because DOS or your hardware has made an auto detection error.
Simply enter the correct values. Also, if some ports are missing,
problems occur. For example, if you install COM 4 without
installing COM 3 (quite often done because the mouse is usually on
COM 1 and to change all the software for a mouse on COM 2 is a
nuisance) then you must create a "fake" COM 3 (point it to a
non-existent port or to COM 1) and then setup COM 4 correctly.
If problems still persist it may be that you have an IRQ clash.
For example, if you have a mouse on COM 1 you usually can't install
your modem on COM 3 because COM 1 and COM 3 usually share the same
IRQ line. Try checking the serial card manual or modem manual to
see if you can use some other IRQ.
