Contacts for this group are Brian O'Reegan and Allen Rayburn. Dr. James Neelin gave a well documented talk on his research of the Robson and related families. This was most interesting as a number of LCGS members are direct descendants of this family. Our appreciation and thanks go to Dr. Neelin. Our apologies for taking so long before publishing information and articles which we've been receiving, but unfortunately, we always have space constraints due to the size of our newsletter. However, have faith! We are getting caught up, so if you don't see your material in this newsletter it will more than likely be in the next, promise!!? Oh, and keep up the great work by giving us feedback and ideas. WELCOME TO CERTA CITO by Jim Carter My last article for the LCGS newsletter dealt with some of the message areas available on Certa Cito. I omitted one important area due to the fact that the article was becoming too long. It is now included in this issue. TINY TAFELS Tiny Tafels (Ahnentafels) can be produced by most genealogical computer programs directly, or may be produced from a GEDCOM file (any good genealogical computer program should be able to generate a GEDCOM file, which allows you to move your datbase from one program to another; for instance, from Personal Ancestral File to Brother's Keeper). Typically, the Tiny Tafel entered in this message area will contain only a fragment of your tree. This example of a Tiny Tafel is from the GENEDATA (Tiny Tafel) area of Certa Cito: Msg#:11340 *GENEDATA* 09-16-94 15:38:23 From: GORDON CAMPBELL To: ALL Subj: CAMPBELL.TT N Gordon Campbell A P.O. It should be noted that the Tiny Tafel conference has been in operation since the winter of 1990-1991. Many genealogical bulletin boards, including Certa Cito, maintain a library of all Tiny Tafels ever entered into this area. There are thousands of Tiny Tafels now available. The following programs are available on Certa Cito for creating, searching and viewing Tiny Tafels: GED2TT90.ZIP Converts GEDCOM files to Tiny Tafels PAFTT.ZIP Generates Tiny Tafels from PAF files TTED22.ZIP Allows quick searches of the Tiny Tafel database. Of very special importance when using this area! This area is to be used only for submitting Tiny Tafels. No other form of discussion is permitted here! If you see a Tiny Tafel of interest, the proper message area in which to respond is labelled "Tiny Tafel Reply (GENEREPLY)". SASKATCHEWAN HISTORY BOOKS History books have been written about many villages and towns in Saskatchewan. Some were written in 1967 as Centennial projects, but more were probably written in 1980 to celebrate Saskatchewan's 75th birthday. Some communities have even updated the information with a second volume. These books contain a great deal of history for the local areas. This may include homestead maps, history of schools, businesses, transportation, and family histories for people that live or have lived in the district. In some cases, cemetery listings are included. Many of these books are deposited in the libraries of Saskatchewan. For example, the Regina Public Library has collected about 800 volumes to date. Local regional libraries most likely have copies for the communities that they serve. These histories should be available to anyone utilizing the inter-library loan system. Although the Regina Public Library does not generally loan their collection, the Saskatchewan Provincial Library has a large collection of materials as well. The Saskatchewan Genealogy Society has a good collection of these local histories. Membership is required for the use of the SGS libraries, although members of the SGS will search for information for a fee. The SGS has undertaken a project that will index the names that are included in these Saskatchewan histories. The project is still in the early stages but many books have been indexed to date. Actual use of the electronic database began in October 1994. Submitted by Brian McArton*, Box 73, Dilke SK S0G 1C0 *Brian also writes that he would be happy to search through any Saskatchewan sources including history books in exchange for searching local Lanark County records, especially newspaper, land and cemetery records. ================= The National Archives of Canada has recently published a book titled: Manuscript and government records in the United Kingdom and Ireland relating to Canada.
