This thread appeared shortly after someone posted a warning about VRAMDIR encouraging data loss. Of course it took on a meaning of its own. I couldn't get the original articles describing the data loss so please forward them to me if you have them. Very sorry for the multiple postings that make this file so relatively huge. Some broken news server reposted many of the same articles at least four times over (and notice how the multiple re-posts from news.accessone.com have the identical text!) I thought about removing the multiple posts from here but they actually add to the argument against VSC and VRAMDIR. Please read the benchmark section in the readme file for details about how to benchmark VRAMDIR. For Wintune to use VRAMDIR, you need to map a root directory into VRAMDIR, e.g., H:\, or G:\, or C:\, choose one drive that has the least number of files on it. After Windows restarts, don't run anything else, just Wintune. After Wintune finishes, remove the root mapping in VRAMDIR (e.g., H:\), and restart Windows immediately. Don't run anything else before you remove the mapping and restart Windows. Now, you can see that H:\ is handled by VRAMDIR and its Uncached speed on your system should be higher than 5.5MB/s. (a jump from the current 1MB/s). As we explained to you, because WinStone puts too much emphasis on video, it is not suitable to use it to test VRAMDIR, which speeds up the hard-disk subsystem, typically the temporary file operations. For example, the results of the benchmarks on a Gateway 2000 Pentium 100: MDB 16MB file: Hard-disk: 1.4 MB/s RAMDRIVE: 9.0 MB/s VRAMDIR: 35.0 MB/s WinBench Disk WinMark: VCACHE: 0.7 MB/s VRAMDIR: 1.5 MB/s These harddisk benchmark programs are downloadable from the net and everybody can test those with VRAMDIR. We are sure that everyone will get results similar to ours. Specifically, WinBench is also from PC Magazine, and it is designed to test sub-system performance. You can not ignore these benchmark results. Can you think of any other program that can provide this much speed enhancement indicated by these results? The speed you quoted are caused by other differences between the two runs of Wintune. If you want to test RAMDRIVE speed, you need to use MDB instead of Wintune, since Wintune only tests harddrive speed, not RAMDRIVE. To test VRAMDIR with Wintune or MDB, you need to map a root directory into VRAMDIR, e.g., D:\. Select a drive with the least number of files on it. Restart Windows. Then run Wintune or MDB only, do not run anything else. After you finish benchmarking, remove the D:\ mapping in VRAMDIR, and then restart Windows immediately, do not run anything else before Windows restarts. You will get the results similar to ours: Hard-disk: 1.4 MB/s RAMDRIVE: 9.0 MB/s VRAMDIR: 35.0 MB/s Virtual Software Corporation 15016 SE 63 St. Bellevue, WA 98006-4634 http://accessone.com/~virtual/vramdir.htm virtual@accessone.com Please visit our WWW site for more information and to download a FREE trial copy of VRAMDIR. It's cheap enough now. ******************************************************************** "There would be a lot more civility in this world if people didn't take that as an invitation to walk all over you" - Calvin and Hobbes From van-bc!n1van.istar!van.istar!west.istar!ott.istar!istar.net!tor.istar!east.istar!news1.hotstar.net!winternet.com!mr.net!news.sgi.com!swrinde!cs.utexas.edu!geraldo.cc.utexas.edu!arlut.utexas.edu!UPPSSNEWSPUB01!UPPSSNEWSPUB05!p6dnf.drcoffsite.com!interpath!news.sprintlink.net!news-fw-22.sprintlink.net!news.voicenet.com!dsinc!spool.mu.edu!howland.erols.net!math.ohio-state.edu!magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu!freenet.columbus.oh.us!not-for-mail Wed Aug 14 22:02:21 1996 From: gteater@freenet.columbus.oh.us (Greg Teater) Subject: Re: *WARNING* - D/L VRAMDIR speed up Windows 95 Followup-To: alt.windows95,comp.os.ms-windows.apps.utilities.win95,microsoft.public.win95.filediskmanagement Date: 8 Aug 1996 23:43:11 -0400 Organization: The Greater Columbus FreeNet Lines: 7 X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Message-ID: <1996Aug13.0058550644.85.201@UPPSSNEWSPUB05> Newsgroups: alt.windows95,comp.os.ms-windows.apps.utilities.win95,microsoft.public.win95.filediskmanagement X-Auth-Login-Name: Path: van-bc!n1van.istar!van.istar!west.istar!ott.istar!istar.net!tor.istar!east.istar!news1.hotstar.net!winternet.com!mr.net!news.sgi.com!swrinde!cs.utexas.edu!geraldo.cc.utexas.edu!arlut.utexas.edu!UPPSSNEWSPUB01!UPPSSNEWSPUB05!p6dnf.drcoffsite.com!interpath!news.sprintlink.net!news-fw-22.sprintlink.net!news.voicenet.com!dsinc!spool.mu.edu!howland.erols.net!math.ohio-state.edu!magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu!freenet.columbus.oh.us!not-for-mail I would like to see a two hour runtime to be able to test office apps. -- _________________________________________________ / Greg Teater, RCDD \ @ Registered Communications Distribution Designer @ \_________________________________________________/ From van-bc!unixg.ubc.ca!info.ucla.edu!csulb.edu!news.sgi.com!enews.sgi.com!news.mathworks.com!newsfeed.internetmci.com!csn!nntp-xfer-1.csn.net!hermes.dna.mci.com!news Wed Aug 14 22:02:22 1996 Path: van-bc!unixg.ubc.ca!info.ucla.edu!csulb.edu!news.sgi.com!enews.sgi.com!news.mathworks.com!newsfeed.internetmci.com!csn!nntp-xfer-1.csn.net!hermes.dna.mci.com!news From: "Monty Scroggins" Newsgroups: alt.windows95,comp.os.ms-windows.apps.utilities.win95,comp.os.ms-windows.win95.misc,microsoft.public.win95,microsoft.public.win95.filediskmanagement,alt.os.windows95 Subject: Re: *WARNING* - D/L VRAMDIR speed up Windows 95 Date: 14 Aug 1996 15:47:11 GMT Organization: MCI Communications Lines: 8 Message-ID: <01bb89f7$a564e180$ea4922a6@mscroggins.lab.ns.mci.com> References: <4t4g61$7mh@news.accessone.com> <4tbc2d$5h1@newnews.iafrica.com> <4tbgl1$i1p@nntp4.u.washington.edu> <31FA2419.5345@iaehv.nl> <4tduv5$h0o@nntp4.u.washington.edu> <31fc4a47.46645787@news.usa.pipeline.com> <3206bfb1.4156139@news.iapc.net> <4u6shv$a2v@nntp4.u.washington.edu> <1996Aug13.0458460658.85.199@UPPSSNEWSPUB05> NNTP-Posting-Host: 166.34.73.234 X-Newsreader: Microsoft Internet News 4.70.1155 Xref: van-bc comp.os.ms-windows.apps.utilities.win95:19320 comp.os.ms-windows.win95.misc:128234 I bought the Hurrican proggie from Helix software... We are sorry if our documentation is not clear enough. We got very positive benchmark results. For example, the results of the benchmarks on a Gateway 2000 Pentium 100: MDB 16MB file: Hard-disk: 1.4 MB/s RAMDRIVE: 9.0 MB/s VRAMDIR: 35.0 MB/s WinBench Disk WinMark: VCACHE: 0.7 MB/s VRAMDIR: 1.5 MB/s These benchmark programs are downloadable on the net. Everybody can try those with VRAMDIR on their own system. We are certain that everyone will get the results similar to ours. It is true that in real life how much VRAMDIR can help depends on the applications you use. Many users have reported very positive results with VRAMDIR. You can visit our WWW site for some user feedbacks. Many applications create temporary files, which can be helped by VRAMDIR. It is possible that during the short period when users tried VRAMDIR, the operations didn't use VRAMDIR enough to show much difference. But those short tests may not represent the true real life usage pattern. So we recommend users to keep VRAMDIR in the system for several days, and every time before shutdown or restart Windows, take a look at the VRAMDIR performace statistics in System Monitor, and see if the operations performed (thus saved) by VRAMDIR is large enough to worth $10. >If you want real system improvements, buy more RAM. It's cheap enough >now. VRAMDIR puts RAM into more efficient use. It works well with 8MB, as well as 32MB.
