Damping-Off

Affects seedlings as they germinate.  The bottom of the stem turns mushy, and causes the plant to topple.  Damping-off is extremely common and a serious problem if you start plants from seed.  To prevent the problem, use a sterile growing medium such as sphagnum moss, vermiculite, or perlite, or buy a sterile mixture.  Treat seeds with a fungicide.
