Hardy perennial with deep violet or white flowers, 3/4-inch across.  Delicate scent.  Well-known as a source of perfume.  Low-growing plant with simple heart-shaped leaves.

Comments
Makes attractive cover.  However, the dainty-looking plant spreads quickly beyond intended bed.  Should be used only where can be contained.  Propagate by divisions or runners.  Thrives in partial shade and fairly rich soil.  Requires good moisture and winter mulching.  Blooms early in spring.  Suitable for rock gardens.
