William Faulkner created Yoknapatawpha County to explore his vision of the South. He brought to life the rural South and showed it could be just as exciting and interesting as a big ol' place like New York City. Heck, there's even a contest for writers to imitate Faulkner called The Annual Faux Faulkner Contest.
Or consider Flannery O'Connor. Her Catholic upbringing and Southern heritage skewed her view of Southern life provoking her to mix superstition and fanatacism into her stories.
We've put together a few lists -- articles about writers in the South, links to cool literary 'zines on the Web (there are probably thousands...) and resources for the writer lurking inside you. Go forth and create.
