26th ANNUAL OLD TIME FIDDLERS' JAMBOREE & CRAFTS FESTIVAL - Smithville, TN - July 4-5 - More than 100,000 will be here to hear and play old-time bluegrass music and browse around the 300-table juried arts & crafts show. Categories in the $10,000 contest include clogging, buck dancing, old-time fiddle band, five-string banjo, autoharp, dulcimer, dobro, folk singing, gospel and a fiddle-off for the grand championship. 615-597-4163/464-6444.

UNCLE DAVE MACON DAYS - Murfreesboro, TN - July 10-13 - Uncle Dave Macon, one of the pioneers of the Grand Ole Opry, is the inspiration for this old-time music and dance festival. Includes major competitions in banjo, fiddle, buck dancing and more, plus food and crafts and the Motorless Parade featuring mules, horses and wagons. 800-716-7560.

42nd ANNUAL GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN HIGHLAND GAMES - Grandfather Mountain, NC - July 10-13 - I'll take that haggis barbeque style. The world's largest gathering of Scottish clans is not in Scotland, it's in the highlands of North Carolina. Colorful tents encircle a highland meadow, hundreds of tartan banners fill the air and, like Braveheart, kilt-clad Scots come forth, but to compete in traditional games, not to wage war. Also features rock bands with bagpipes, marching bands, instruction in the Gaelic language and a chance to discover your own tartan. 704-733-1333.

THE BIG GIG - Richmond, VA - July 12-27 - Celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Big Gig with 15 of the hottest days and nights in Richmond's musical history. The gigs take place in gardens, parks, office plazas, museums and concert halls with 60 free concerts and five ticketed events. BEAUFORT COUNTY WATER FESTIVAL - Beaufort, SC - July 18-27 - Glub glub glub.
