Gov. Bush Proclaims June 27 Future Entrepreneur Day as Second Young Texan Wins Unique Scholarship

AUSTIN, Texas -- For the second year in a row, a Texan student has won the largest scholarship in the nation awarded by a small-business association, and the only major award supporting the philosophy of entrepreneurship rather than a specific profession. In recognition of the honor, Gov. George Bush has again proclaimed Future Entrepreneur Day in the state.

On Friday, the National Association for the Self-Employed learned of Gov. Bush's intent to name a special day recognizing young entrepreneurs, a day selected to coincide with the June 27 presentation of the Future Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Dallas.

Seventeen-year-old Rebekka Weinstein, Dallas, valedictorian of the 1997 senior class at Richardson High School, will receive her award and a $12,000 college scholarship check during the NASE's Annual Meeting at Le Meridien Hotel.

In his proclamation, Gov. Bush noted that entrepreneurs are a rich part of Texan heritage "that goes back to early settlers who invested their life savings to make a better life for their families as cattle ranchers and farmers by settling in Texas. It goes back to the entrepreneurs who drilled the first oil wells, and to the many individuals who started small shops and stores that grew into important businesses in their communities.

"I urge all Texans to recognize the contributions that entrepreneurs make to the vibrant economic climate of the Lone Star State, and to encourage young Texans to use their intelligence, courage and drive to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow," Gov. Bush's proclamation concluded.

The NASE FEY award is presented annually to a young man or woman who demonstrates leadership, academic excellence, ingenuity -- and entrepreneurial spirit. Last year, Bush named July 19 Future Entrepreneur Day in conjunction with the award presentation to Mount Vernon's Jeffrey Davis.

The NASE is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan association with more than 320,000 members. It is the largest association of its kind representing the smallest of small businesses. In addition to its scholarship program, the NASE offers its members legislative advocacy and more than 100 other benefits including discounts on business products and services.
