A LONG WAY
It's as interesting now as it was back in 1845. Things haven't changed that much -- we're keeping Scientific American as vibrant as it always was, with the introduction of this new online edition. Here, on the World Wide Web, we are creating a new publication that pushes Scientific American into the frontiers of publishing in an electronic medium. Just as Scientific American has tracked key changes in technology for the past 150 years, we are now participating in the radical transformation driven by computer technology. We invite you to take a look. Each month, we will bring you the best of the current issue -- augmented to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the WWW. You will find many of your favorite magazine features here, as well as at least two major articles in their entirety, with links that let you connect directly to the researchers and their work. You will want to keep coming back often. Scientific American on the WWW will be more than a showcase for the current issue. This site will include a number of features updated weekly and available only to readers of the Scientific American Online edition. Each week we will track the breaking new stories and provide readers with links to related sites. Called explorations, these features will guide online readers through the overwhelming wealth of information on the Internet. By linking to other relevant WWW sites and historical sources from Scientific American, readers can take a guided tour of recent technological developments. We will provide background, links to directly related information and key insights into the investigators themselves. Draw your own conclusions about the newest discoveries of the day. We will also be featuring interviews with scientists in the news and query experts in any discipline to answer readers' questions about science and technology in a section called ask the experts. And if you are interested in gifts -- from books and puzzles to T-shirts and CD-ROMs -- visit the marketplace. This is also a place to communicate with our editors and sales people. You may send us a letter, subscribe to Scientific American, or report address changes or other matters concerning your subscription. Please sign our guestbook and tell us a little bit about yourself and your interests. What you see here is just the beginning. We will be adding other weekly features that further explore the world of technical and scientific achievement. And as new possibilities for communication on the Web develop, we'll make them an integral part of what you can find here. We hope you will become a regular visitor to this site -- we'll be working very hard to ensure that you always find something new and exciting.
