Growing up in southern California, I've gained a real appreciation for all the beauty God has created. The oceans, deserts, and mountains make California one of the most beautiful places on earth.

It breaks my heart to see how carelessness has damaged our relationship with nature, and it is important that we all help clean up the mess we've made. How do we clean up? The best place to begin is at home. Most cities offer separate containers for plastic, aluminum, glass, and paper, though you might have an item that just cannot be recycled, like a mattress. Call your local government and ask them for recommendations. Also, many cities now have recycling centers that accept motor oil. If you spill some oil on the pavement, you can clean it up by pouring cat litter on it and letting it sit for a few days. Then just picking up the litter. This is important because many pets have been killed by drinking small oil spills from autos.

Man With GlobeAnother way to help with the environment is to get involved with environmentally aware groups. There are many environmental groups, both local and national, like the Sierra Club. Volunteers can do just about anything from sealing envelopes, clearing up brush, creating new hiking trails, and handing out brochures. Don't just complain about the mess - help make it disappear through conscious cleaning.
