Impact Online, a Web-based non-profit, will be featured at the summit, a landmark gathering promoting volunteerism and national service in local communities across the United States. The summit will be attended by President Clinton and past presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George Bush. Now, individuals who have an extra hour or two can make a difference by logging onto Impact Online's Volunteer America Web site (http://www.impactonline.org) to find one-time volunteer opportunities right in their neighborhoods. The Volunteer America program is immediately available in San Francisco and Philadelphia, and will be rolled out nationwide later this year. "How many times have we pursued a volunteer opportunity but dropped it because the hours didn't fit with our schedule? Now, there's no need for excuses, just a lot of reasons to help," added Cindy Shove, co-founder and executive director, Impact Online. "Impact Online's Volunteer America is a brilliant site that puts the fulll power of the Web to work for those who need it most. I'm delighted to be a part of the Volunteer America movement," commented Eric Schmidt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Novell. Once logged onto the Impact Online Volunteer America site, potential volunteers can enter their zip code and the time frame during which they want to volunteer, and Volunteer America instantly displays a list of one-time opportunities right in their neighborhood. To sign up, potential volunteers simply click on an opportunity of interest to learn more details about the event. Listings are regularly updated as the non-profit organizations enter additional opportunities on a frequent basis. "Now there's a web site set up to make volunteering easy for anyone who is moved by a situation and wants to help," said Rick Smolan, creator, "24-Hours in Cyberspace." "Impact Online tells you what you as an individual can do to make a difference in your community." Impact Online (IOL) is a non-profit, Web-based organization utilizing the Internet to "turn good intentions into action." Founded in 1994, Impact Online's mission is to facilitate and increase community involvement by connecting individuals with volunteer opportunities nationwide. At Impact Online's web site (http://www.impactonline.org), individuals can find one-time volunteer opportunities, see descriptions of non-profit organizations, and get tips and advice on volunteering. Non-profit organizations can create their own free web page and list immediate and ongoing volunteer needs. The site currently welcomes approximately 20,000 visitors per month and is quickly becoming the first stop on the Internet for those who want to make a difference. Impact Online's Volunteer America is a new initiative highlighting one-time volunteer opportunities which provide an immediate way for people to get involved. Example events include participating in an AIDS walk-a-thon, serving meals to the elderly, or home-building for Habitat for Humanity. Impact Online plans to extend this site to cities throughout the country in 1997. Corporations interested in sponsoring the site should contact Impact Online at 415/327-1389. # # # All trademarks and registered trademarks are property of their respective holders.
